President Joe Biden on Tuesday said that the United States will impose sanctions “far beyond” the ones that the United States imposed in 2014 following the annexation of the Crimean peninsula.

“This is the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine,” Biden said in a White House speech, signaling a shift in his administration’s position. “We will continue to escalate sanctions if Russia escalates,” he added.

Russian elites and their family members will also soon face sanctions, Biden said, adding that “Russia will pay an even steeper price” if Moscow decides to push forward into Ukraine. Two Russian banks and Russian sovereign debt will also be sanctioned, he said.

Also in his speech, Biden said he would send more U.S. troops to the Baltic states as a defensive measure to strengthen NATO’s position in the area.

Russia shares a border with Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

A day earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops to go into the separatist Donetsk and Lugansk regions in eastern Ukraine after a lengthy speech in which he recognized the two regions’ independence.

Western powers decried the move and began to slap sanctions on certain Russian individuals, while Germany announced it would halt plans to go ahead with the Russia-to-Germany Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

At home, Biden is facing bipartisan pressure to take more extensive actions against Russia following Putin’s decision. However, a recent poll showed that a majority of Americans believe that sending troops to Ukraine is a “bad idea,” and a slim minority believes it’s a good one.

All 27 European Union countries unanimously agreed on an initial list of sanctions targeting Russian authorities, said French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, and EU foreign affairs head Josep Borell claimed the package “will hurt Russia … a lot.”

Earlier Tuesday, Borell asserted that Russian troops have already entered the Donbas region, which comprises Donetsk and Lugansk, which are under the control of pro-Russia groups since 2014.

And on Tuesday, the Russian Parliament approved a Putin-back plan to use military force outside of Russia’s borders as Putin further said that Russia confirmed it would recognize the expanded borders of Lugansk and Donetsk.

“We recognized the states,” the Russian president said. “That means we recognized all of their fundamental documents, including the constitution, where it is written that their [borders] are the territories at the time the two regions were part of Ukraine.”

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Putin said that Ukraine is “not interested in peaceful solutions” and that “every day, they are amassing troops in the Donbas.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday morning again downplayed the prospect of a Russian invasion and proclaimed: “There will be no war.”

“There will not be an all-out war against Ukraine, and there will not be a broad escalation from Russia. If there is, then we will put Ukraine on a war footing,” he said in a televised address.

The White House began to signal that they would shift their own position on whether it’s the start of an invasion.

“We think this is, yes, the beginning of an invasion, Russia’s latest invasion into Ukraine,” said Jon Finer, the White House deputy national security adviser in public remarks. “An invasion is an invasion and that is what is underway.”

For weeks, Western governments have been claiming Moscow would invade its neighbor after Russia gathered some 150,000 troops along the countries’ borders. They alleged that the Kremlin would attempt to come up with a pretext to attack, while some officials on Monday said Putin’s speech recognizing the two regions was just that.

But Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters Tuesday that Russia’s “latest invasion” of Ukraine is threatening stability in the region, but he asserted that Putin can “still avoid a full blown, tragic war of choice.”

His stated goal was to demilitarise and de-Nazify. His stated aim was to protect people from eight years of genocide from the Ukraine government. He didn't say subjugate.

Also cite something better than NYT before you claim someone else is disingenuous otherwise you're just another mush-brained cunt.
They're citing Putin himself, you moron. You can find hundreds of articles from all kinds of sources including Russian ones, if it bothers you so much, or his original video declaration saying all the same things.
By "denazification" they mean overthrowing legitimate pro-Ukrainian government, dummy, and replacing it with pro-Russian puppet regime. The overall goal is to impose Russia's will on Ukraine, denying their sovereignty. Or is there some other reason for all this bitching about muh NATO and spheres of influence?

This genocide you're talking about is a fiction. "Eight years of genocide" is a popular talking point manufactured by Kremlin's talking heads, but they always fail to disclose that most fatalities on that list are soldiers, mainly Ukrainian, who defended their land from Russian glowies and their pet separatists. As well as civilian victims of the Russian aggression.
All of which is, again, a direct result of Russia violating Ukraine's borders and bringing war to their land.
I know you're huffing exclusively Kremlin propaganda, but try listening to the other side of the story for once (as in, actual reality): https://war.ukraine.ua/articles/8-years-of-war-in-donbas/

While there's been some ethnic tensions in the region, Russia never tried to solve them, they capitalized on them instead to justify their geopolitical ambitions. No one here is buying Putin's Good Samaritan LARP, my nigga.

I want to make one thing clear.

It doesn't bring me any joy to hear all these negative things about Russia, or have to say them myself. It's where I lived all my life, it's where everyone and everything I know is. I still struggle to process everything that's happening, it's hard to believe but it's real. Evil is evil, it has to be called out.
I owe no loyalty to this regime, ideals I believe in precede the notion of "motherland", name that the government likes to don when they want you to die for their interests, yet they're nowhere to be found when you need something from them. I'm a human first and foremost, not some tool to be used. I care for my family and my friends, and the only thing threatening them right now is this government that doesn't know its place.
There could've been a prosperous Russia that sets an example for others, but it doesn't exist. It doesn't exist because of people like Putin. Putin isn't Russia, his regime is a cancerous growth at its heart that twisted it into a grotesque abomination. I want to outlive it and see Russia transformed from this pit of misery into something I could be proud of.

Blindly following your government even if they set trajectory leading straight to hell isn't patriotism, it's plain idiotism. If only everyone could recognize this simple fact.

But it wasn't the Russians so what reason would they have to protest them? They could give Ukraine weapons if they weren't to busy selling them to the Saudi's for oil.
The Russians pretty much brought this on themselves.

Russia isn't trying to change the Ukraine government either wtf are you on about?
Oh, you poor summer child. Russia IS trying to change the Ukraine government back into a puppet state.

No, good faith or bad faith they're still shit scared of the Russian bogey man regardless and tried to plant missiles on their doorstep.
And why would they want that? Because the Russians stole Crimea?

So, the horseshit propaganda is perfectly fine when the US want to invade Iraq though right...
Saddam refused to let the UN weapons inspectors in his country, giving Bush suspicion that he had WMDs. It isn't as bad as Russia pretending to care about ethnic minorities in Eastern Ukraine, only to send them off to die fighting for a war no one wanted.

Name a country in the world that doesn't have blood on its hands. US and its people shouldn't really be throwing stones on a subject like that considering its warcrimes.
China killed 60 million of its own people in the Great Leap Forward. Russia killed 20 million Soviet citizens in the Holodomor.

Whatever blood America and her allies have on their hands, pales in comparison to what Russia and China have.

But fully willing and able to take advantage of it regardless. They still did the same thing, they still set the precedent, they still made it legal to do so.
Nope. They only responded to a fire already burning there. Kind of like sending cops to a bar where people are shooting each other.

Made in Detroit.....oh wait nothing is made there anymore because it's a dead city.
Better than Russia, where it's so dead, there'll be nothing there in 50 years.

So far we've got Brazil, India, China, South Africa all siding with Russia.
Recently the Saudi Arabia sided with them as a fuck you to the US and to top it off recently even Turkey sided with Russia. Meaning Turkey will soon be a major gas hub into Europe via Turk stream.
That's like what, six nations? All with less GDP than the Americans and Europeans? Also, Turkey still sends drones to Ukraine

Europe and the US are sucked so far up their own arseholes to even realise the world is shifting.
What world? The world run by tinpot dictators and poor-ass countries? BRICS is a fucking joke, especially since India and China can't wait to shoot each other in the face.

Pro-war morons that shill for either side are the most disgusting and spineless retard to ever exist.
If you're oh, so dedicated to support one side of this war.
Stop being hypocrite hiding behind your keyboard, just get a plane ticket and go fight for the side you designate as righteous.
War is nothing more than a game of chess where you get to chop off one of your knuckles for every unit lost.
You may win the war but have fun with your mangled hands.

Time to pull out the quote by that old Nazi Hermann Goering:
Naturally, the common people don’t want war; neither in Russia nor in England nor in America, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy or a fascist dictatorship or a Parliament or a Communist dictatorship. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country.

Putin and his billionaire friends are following the playbook to send countless thousands of his own people to misery and death.

True, and NATO, the US, Israel and the EU do the same.

Don't be a nitwit and realize their are no good guys.
And just because you don't perceive the propaganda of your own country doesn't mean it's not there.

War hawks are by definition retarded, gigantic pussies, or both.

Whenever I see arguments like this it reminds me of Rittenhouse and people that act like he was a murderer for not just peacefully getting shot in the face.

Putin is 0.73 of a Kilo-Hitler or 3.8 Mega-Maduros.

Odin's Gaping Eyesocket, how do you want me to answer the question "how bad is" someone?
How should I know?
I made fun of Nuland and her neocon friends calling everyone they want dead Hitler.
You made the qualification that being Putin is bad enough.
I wanted to know what that means?

What I really want to know is what should be done about him?

I like the shifting between moral outrage over muh genocidal Nazi regime to complete 'everything is bad and nothing matters' nihilism. I now feel very demoralized, and I will stop caring about Russia's war of aggression and instead adopt a pro-peace position that allows Russia to obtain everything it desires.
