Linus Gabriel Sebastian & Linus Media Group / Linus Tech Tips - Narcissistic corporate shill YouTuber driving his media empire into the ground. KILL COUNT: 2

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
This reminds me of a few discurssions that I saw on the LTT forums where the same users that complained that mining is bad to the environment and shit were the ones who would get high power electronics or wouldn't turn off their computers at night
I would not really care so much to mention it, if the video was worth the watts he uses. But i think we got like 4 sentences of interesting information. 500000 shill adds. All i got out of the video is. NVMe drives are fast(FUCKING NO SHIT), NASA uses them.

I don't care too but I find amusing how Linus claims to be a environmentalist, socialist, feminist and more but he doesn't care that the 4090 is basically a space heater, that he do sexual jokes with woman and lick the boots of big tech

than to do the boring day-to-day tech shit
A thing that supports this, is that if you look at their employee list on the LTT site, you won't see a person who'se job is only IT/Sysadmin stuff, Jake and Anthony are both writers too. So you don't have someone who would create ZFS alerts, grafana/prometheus dashboards or do a basic health check-up in the morning because they are too busy writing ADHD videos to LTT.

The most fun part is that in the past a guy bought this to Linus(that he needs a proper fulltime IT staff) and he threw a tantrum on the guy because of that and then you see every month a problem due the lack of someone who the whole point is to manage their IT infra.

A thing that I wonder is how there was never being a ramsonware or leak from the LTT network, their infra(every editor has full RW access to the servers SMB folders) and I bet linus stores a lot of personal/secure things on the main server too without any encryption

One of the things i have noticed over the last few years of seeing his content and watching WAN show. Is that he is an intellectual coward. I have posted before about how the politics he cares for are the trendy San Fran bubble politics, he will take it deep in the ass for them. But when you start asking questions about his stances on sweatshops making his merch. He dodges the questions with empty platitudes and if he can't he ghosts you. Then he does the 14 year old girl shit of "mocking" you on twitter. By mocking i mean change his screen name to do the i will take your joke from you and make it my own routine. See his obvious seething about his hot take on adblock getting dunked on. Linus is a bit like a few other people on the net i have seen. Their principles are based on popularity, not on any true belief. I am fully confident if the union talk started in his company among his employees, he would be on the phone to a union busting firm that very second. That was also something he commented on, if i remember it came up on WAN show about union's and his take was. They don't need a union, i pay them so well. Can't for the life of me remember what one he said this on. But i remember him saying it.

Does anyone have any idea what could possibly cause a Dell Optiplex 7460 All-in-One to draw between 17 and 20 watts while being powered off, and straight 20 watts while in sleep mode?
I was taking measurements of a nother system that's supposed to run 24/7, and for shits and giggles decided to test my main computer - I was quite surpised by those numbers.
Now, the tool I used is certainly not the most accurate but at least the readings are - no matter what's being tested - believable; a ~2010 era office-tier PC drawing between 65 and 90 watts makes sense, a thin client drawing 11 watts makes sense, a single monitor drawing 20 watts makes sense ...

But, a 2018-built business computer that's compliant with both Energy Star 6.1 and the stricter European equivalent which requires a system to consume less than 0.5 watts both in sleep mode and powered off consuming 40 times as much makes no sense. I mean, those are 2005 gaming PC numbers

Sounds like the Intel ME backdoor being used to put your computer into a botnet :D

I just keep getting reminded that they have 60 employees yet not one of them can do basic maintenance and Linus plans to get 100 employees for the LTT lab
at this point why even have a server if you aren't going to do the bare minimum?

get a separate company to do the servers. I don't know why Linus hasn't even thought of it but knowing him and how he hates doing mundane shit it's literally something he is willing to throw money at.

fucking have a complete file server failure for your engineering team and require a full backup.
You want to ruin LTT, don't you? Their solution to their damaged backup server was "just copy everything over to a new server and it's good enough".

Level1Techs has made a paypig-only podcast discussing the technical details of Linus' data loss and just how bad it was.

Audio archive (I do have the video downloaded but the site is just too slow right now for that)

tl;dw: The petabyte ZFS array had absolutely zero maintenance for years, not even a routine scrub and it's implied throughout that when it finally crapped out, the LTT brains trust started fucking with it and made a mess.
Their attempts at salvaging it made it even worse and the expert had to rollback their "fixes".

I don't think we should see in LTT anything but "tech entertainers".

It could just be my SysAdmin side; but I fucking despite how he wants to do his family LAN Room. Is it cool to have a server to host shit and be able to do stuff, yeah sure; but the amount of gear and cables to run everything isn't something someone is going to want to put up with when something inevitable breaks. Especially if it's your wife or kid and they can't access whatever, because one of the dozen points of failure between your physical device and the host breaks and they don't have the know-how to troubleshoot everything you have hooked up... all while you're out filming another video. Or God forbid your server to pool heating plans requires maintenance somehow. These are not SOHO solutions or configurations, this is the kind of shit professional firms with 24/7 staff have. If shit breaks somewhere, and God forbid it's off-hours, weekend, or holidays, that's a big chunk of change to get everyone out to your house to fix it; because you're too fucking stupid to just make a normal server stack with AD, File Service, and whatever else you want or need.

Yeah, I'm kinda mad...
I gave up all hope of any kind of technical competence from LTT (the idiot himself or any of his staff) when their endless debacle with that giant filer began. The design was retarded from the start (ZFS is good but not magic; taking a pair of raidz2, spread across 25 disks each, and mirroring them is literally begging for data loss) but the fact that they did the same fucking thing twice more when the inevitable failures happened just blows my mind. There's a reason storage systems in the petabytes range are built on clusters, not crammed into a single server. "SAN" isn't (just) a buzzword. Morons.

I wouldn't let any of these nutters near a fucking help desk, much less a sysadmin or lab job.

How is anything from labs going to make money? Does he think people are going to come to him for some sort of certification? Or will it just be the 6th LTT channel that nobody watches?
This really is going to be the big problem I don't think he has a big answer for. Will people watch videos on his lab content? Absolutely, not even joking, I'm confident a significant fraction of his current audience will watch them. Would they have also watched any other testing that was significantly less expensive instead? Once again, absolutely confident they would.

Labs a bad business idea because most people just don't care, and those that do are going to technical focused places like GN who put out harder data. LTT Labs is just gonna be dumbing down the data at the end of the day to fit into a videos time budget, which moots the value of all the better equipment.

People will watch it, but they also would have watched a trash fire of measuring power draw with a multimeter and some duct tape. You would think that Linus, master of overpricing and under developing merch, would recognize the same principle of "don't spend on things that don't improve the products sales" applies to video production as well. Perhaps that's actually just from a competent if cold person over in creator warehouse, and he just wears the ideas as his own since its worked so far.

Labs could be done simply and amusingly - have a question. Hire an actual testing lab to test the question. Get the result. Create a “home brew” test and run that and then say “after our home test showed that computers use electricity we hired a UL lab and they confirmed it! We’re so smart and we’re able to do it with only a kill a watt meter”

Perfect clickbait and actual results. Whodathunk.

I remember back in 2018 or 19 when Linus shit on iJustine for having a bunch of external hard drives of her old videos for her backup, but you know what, you organize them by year and it’s easier than whatever bullshit Linus fails at doing all this time.

Even for the exorbitant price of those jellyfish servers it still looks like an equal competitor when you factor in time loss and peace of mind

Linus' storage needs could be met by a tape drive for old videos and a small SAN for sharing currently worked on videos between editors.
He has no need for a petabyte of SSD storage, which is why his example use case for it was running a demo Nvidia built for NASA.

You want to ruin LTT, don't you? Their solution to their damaged backup server was "just copy everything over to a new server and it's good enough".
I don't want to ruin them; mainly because I know what it's like being without a job for a while. You can be the biggest piece of shit on Earth, and I'd prefer you to work.

That aside, I don't like Linus and how he presents. "Golly jee-willickers, our million dollar server is dead, but luckily we have a Necromancer on speed-dial who taught us how to resurrect it." Meanwhile if something that important went down in the real world; "I don't care how long it takes or who you have to kill, get that shit working or get another job!" And you're there for 14+ miserable hours, not a 20-30 minute video making dumb jokes.

He also doesn't have a single black person on staff

I was wrong, there was a single one all the way at the bottom.

*Clothing Designer but with all the stressful and mundane tasks.

I will give credit to Linus for taking action with a common issue with the clothing merch.
or at least I hope that is why they hired her, she totally isn't there to entertain Linus' fantasy projects...

merch issue for reference:
Looks like the Project Farm thing might be happening for real.

In other news, container shipping delays may blow out the bag delivery timeframe. Apparently they put some slack in the estimates but it might not have been enough.

They're also having another mini PR disaster on Reddit, this time relating to bad quality hems on their (typically USD$20) t-shirts.
