It kept things going for quite awhile. It would have been a miracle if you produced software that actually worked with the budget we put you on. Fredrick is too brainlet to see that even though unfiltered free speech (like what was on 8chan) can sometimes lead to the radicalization of people who will go on to do violence because of ideas they are exposed to, curtailing free speech leads to censorship and enslavement and is 1000 times worse if you look at the death counts of regimes throughout history and present day that don’t allow dissenting opinions. Of course getting rid of 8chan won’t lead to that directly but it is a domino effect.

I don't think anyone knows what happened to Hotwheels. There was some speculation early on that he found some new friend group or that there was a girl he was trying to impress, but nobody like that ever turned up. I used to talk to him a lot on IRC and we ran a bunch of experiments on the boards. I can try to share what I remember but compared to everything else going on at the time it was pretty minor and super retarded so there's not a lot of detail.

So when Hotwheels tried to launch Next and realized it was too slow to handle the userbase, he started panicking real bad for some reason. He got this crazy idea to use something called gcache or gcached or something because he thought it was disk access slowing shit down. He brought a bunch of people in to try to salvage the situation and basically gave them root on whatever was running Next to try to get it working. During this he somehow decided Josh was enemy number one and was trying to sabotage 8chan. This seems to be a recurring theme among unhinged web administrators (see Graf). I remember him saying some REALLY insane shit like Infinity was fine the whole time and there was just a minor problem with it and someone sabotaged it. And I had enough understanding of the technical details at the time to know this was batshit insane.

Pretty quick he basically sold everything to Jim and begged him to put some of his employees on fixing Infinity. Then almost immediately he started accusing Jim of everything he'd been accusing Josh of like his voodoo doll just randomly switched targets. This is when he started getting hostile to me and everyone else. There was no talking him down. He left all the private channels we were in and started furfagging all over twitter. My buddies were totally dumbfounded and half of us thought he was kidding (I was one of them). I got in touch with him to try to figure out wtf he was doing and I wasn't really able to get a word in edgewise. He wasn't listening to anything I said and just kept saying I was mad about 8chan going down.

Maybe it was medication, maybe it's his illness. Maybe he just went crazy. Nobody really knows.

The point of 8chan originally was to solve a bunch of problems other *chan sites had. The biggest problem was every site needed a "benevolent dictator" like Moot, Hotwheels, Josh, etc. to survive. As soon as the benevolent dictator trooned out the site would invariably eat shit. So the point of Infinity was to reduce the power of the admin and the jannies and return the power to the users. But what happened was pretty discouraging. The board owners started warring with each other and with their users. Board owners made gay little chat room cabals with their buddies and tried to get as many boards under their thumb as possible. They were using information from their hotpocketing to cross-reference admin logs on various boards and dox each other and their users. I've even got a couple screenshots of actual feds getting control of boards. So eventually it just became another endless raid and there was no reason to continue.

I honestly don't think the Fediverse will fare any better. It has all the same problems 8chan has, it just got rid of the benevolent dictator at the top. What's going on over there right now is a janny war, and all the admins are defederating each other and spreading faggoty lies nobody believes just like they did all those years ago. Eventually the users are going to get fed up and if there's no benevolent dictator of the Fediverse they'll either create one or burn the entire system down. This is exactly what Graf is doing, with full knowledge of what he is doing.

I'm not even really mad at him specifically. When he goes down there are ten thousand to take his place. Because people are shit like that.
