It started before the show dropped so to be honest I think they're mostly doing it performatively to show everyone how "trans" they are rather than as a solution to real dysphoria. To be honest if they just shaved their head and learned how to bind properly they would probably pass as male, but we know they will never do that because that requires a vague amount of effort.
