I don't think we'll know until the end of the democrat presidential primary. I think they might legit just go with whoever actually wins for once, from the layman's perspective they seem to be just as clueless as to who their presidential nom will be as their constituents and everyone else.

The Progressives have the power they have because their voters actually like them--and get mad at them for not being sufficiently progressive-- which is not the case for the Establishment. The Establishment have to buy ad time and be vague on issues. Much like Biden himself, the Establishment are twisting in the wind and have no clue on how to govern. Because that's what's really wrong with their strategy--they are complete garbage on leadership at best and more likely Chinese saboteurs in reality.

There is a third option here and it is if anything more... depressing? The Establishment didn't let Bernie win because they wanted Hillary and sincerely believed they could keep a specific grift going further. Namely, they pay lip service to the progs but then give them jack shit. Keeping them in control through false promises and token bills that do nothing. Think, what Establishment Republicans have been doing to the entire grassroots party.

The problem is that Democrat politics do not work like Republican politics. Republicans really like their orderly successions and attempting to jump the queue is met with scorn when it comes time for political advancement. This means they have a much more firm control of who gets up higher unless someone bigger than them comes in and begins throwing their weight around.

Democrat politics meanwhile is more like a popularity contest. Whoever gets the most fame and attention wins, experience be damned. So Bernie came close to winning but they managed to shut him out and tried to assert their prior status quo. But... the Bernie voters didn't go away. They just started voting for Prog candidates. And then a few visible successes made their faction go from a comfortably controllable 12-15% to an unwieldy 30-35%.

They didn't believe the progs were a problem in 2016, and by the time 2020 rolled around the progs had too much power and removing Trump was more important than the itnernal schism.

How war works today is that the implausibly deniable number of guys point the missiles and aim the artillery and then the guys with 4 weeks of training who were press-ganged into fighting push the fire button.
