There are even toys made to look like "real" gym equipment. I think Atlas would love something like this or this.

When he's a bit older, they could even set up a jungle gym/climbing structure like this for him in the garage, which appears to have quite a bit of space. It's likely too hot for much of the year for him to play outside, but having a space in the garage would be fantastic for him. He'd get to hang out with Glenn without being in harm's way, and they could make a big deal about how the play equipment was just for Atlas to use, not Daddy. Little kids get a kick out of having a space of their very own that is off-limits to grown-ups. It would be much safer and more developmentally appropriate than it is for him to wander freely around the garage playing with items that are not toys. A modular play structure could really grow with him for years, with pieces being swapped out as he gets bigger and more coordinated, until he's old enough to safely use real gym equipment if he wants to. He appears quite physically capable for his age, and I bet he'd really have fun climbing around on his own little playground. Glenn could make a big show of being impressed with the tricks Atlas learns and how awesome his little gym is, and it would be a sweet little bonding experience for them.

It just bums me out to see them shell out thousands of dollars for equipment Luna cannot use, while Atlas plays with stray objects in the deathtrap garage. Obviously, some of the equipment they've gotten for Luna is essential, like her stander and stroller, but I don't think we have ever seen Atlas with something special that belongs only to him.

Give me rainbows.

So this may be a dumb question... I have followed this thread for a year now and at the end of the day always wonder ... does Luna have any awareness at all of what's going on around her? I know she's deaf and blind but would she be considered sentient, conscious, etc? Is she just like a shell or as others have said a "meat puppet"? I know it's probably impossible to know for sure but I do wonder what's inside Luna's misshapen oversized head and underdeveloped body?

If there really is nothing there, when will Robyn reconcile that there really is no Luna, only a shell of what could have been. I don't mean to sound grim but I wonder if that thought ever enters her mind.

So Robyn is now getting Luna's orthos ordered from a store that isnt a medical supplier really. It just makes little splints in its own proprietary way that are "thumb splints" that it will add wrist straps too. This is a step up though since she used to get them from people buying them off her wishlist on amazon.

Wonder if Robyn sees the irony in the second video. Luna can make potatoes, just like mummy did!!!

It’s dumb because it’s been discussed from the beginning, and if you’ve been reading for a year, I think it impossible that you missed it. People who are brain experts here think Luna has nothing left in her skull to think or feel with. Not only is she blind and deaf, she has little brain tissue in between the cysts to signal anything. She’s a potato. You could mash her and she wouldn’t know the difference. None of us are Luna and so can’t describe what is experienced, but it’s likely nothing, not even pain. Sadly, people in these vegetative states sometimes can look like they are responding, even if they aren’t.

It’s also dumb to think Robyn will ever realize this. She’s the one who told us Luna was blind, then spent a couple years trying to get glasses to fit her melon head, now she’s pretending Luna is looking at a yes and no prompt on a monitor. Robyn’s entire existance revolves around pretending Luna is a normal child and is trying to bend the universe to fit that story.

I'm not an expert, so feel free to assign as much or as little weight to the following as you see fit.

Luna has no consciousness. She's not aware of her own existence, much less of anything going on around her. She's a "meat puppet", as you describe it. It's very difficult to even conceptualize this, because we can't really comprehend what it must be like to be alive but completely unaware of ourselves. Indeed, one has to wonder if such an existence is "like" anything.

As far as what is going on inside her head, we have a pretty good idea of that, too. I can't post images right now, but somewhere in this thread, I posted a few images from MRI and gross examination of the brains of infants with multicystic encephalomalacia. I have more, which I can post at some point. Really, though, this is one of those diagnoses that's pretty much self-explanatory: instead of brain tissue, Luna's head is full of thin-walled cysts, which themselves are filled with cerebrospinal fluid. Imagine a cluster of water balloons.

I'll try to find the post I made with images and link it here.

Edit:
Here's the post I was thinking of.

Additionally, here's a post from @MirnaMinkoff with a link to the Radiopaedia article about multicystic encephalomalacia. Radiopaedia is a great source and has lots of images.

Robyn often likes to frame it that Luna was sent here to teach us a lesson. I think she means something about being good to each other or some happy shit like that, but maybe she’s some kind of Buddhist koan. If we can comprehend her state of non-existence, we instantly achieve nirvana.

Thank you for your explanation. While I understand it's been said many times Luna's a potato, meat puppet, etc. it can be a little tricky conceptualizing it, you're right.

It's dumb to assume she can't feel because of what's been said in the thread. I guess it's safe to say she can't think. I appreciate all the expertise that's been shared and it is likely she's got nothing left but who knows.

Either way, it's a tragedy and I can only hope it won't be for much longer.

Splint stuff:

Ok so I remember that Luna’s muscle contractions are so far gone that these wrist splints wouldn’t help with much, is that correct?

For other patients with brain damage causing spasticity, orthotics can help stretch overly tight muscles, preserve range of motion, and keep the joints from becoming deformed. All of this is good because it helps decrease the likelihood that the patient will have pain, makes it easier for them or their caregivers to assist with activities of daily living by preserving mobility, maintains bone density, and lessens the possibility of requiring more invasive orthopedic interventions like surgeries, which have long recovery periods during which skills can be lost. Even in people who don't really move and are never going to have normal mobility, keeping muscles and tendons nice and loose is really important. This is why kids who are never expected to stand or walk independently usually have some kind of standing frame. Bearing weight through the hips and legs is crucial for proper development of the bones and joints. Kids who never stand on their legs often have problems with their hips, and while it's correctable, doing so requires a major, brutal surgery involving sawing through the femurs (thigh bones), putting the hip joint into the correct position in the socket, and then putting everything back together with screws and plates. The kid is then in a spica cast (a cast from toes to waist with a bar that keeps the legs held apart) for weeks, which is presumably as awful as it sounds for all involved, especially if the kid wears diapers. The plates and screws have to be removed eventually, meaning another surgery with general anesthesia. It's like the old saying about an ounce of prevention being worth a pound of cure. Better to keep up with the orthotics to make life easier and less painful for all involved, especially in cases where a child already deals with way more than his share of pain.

In Luna's case, since she likely has no ability to understand pain, there's not really a point, except keeping her limbs mobile probably makes it easier to care for her. It's hard to change diapers or dress someone who is stiff as a board, and having severe contractures can make it difficult or impossible for a person to sit in a wheelchair or even lie in bed. The more rigid, poky bits she has, the greater the likelihood of developing skin compromise and pressure sores, which are a major contributor to mortality and morbidity in severely disabled people. People can actually die from bedsores.

In this situation, it probably makes Robyn feel like she's doing something for Luna, which is fine. There's not really much that she can actually do for her child, so pretending that the orthotics matter is a nice hobby. Kind of like how some moms get really into the PTO or fundraising for their kid's travel hockey team or helping sew costumes for the dance recital. It's like that, but with a spud instead of a child.

I suspect it’s fair to say most things are done for Robyn’s aversion to the truth rather than Luna’s benefit.
Most people would say that the realization that you're doing things to your child rather than for her is cause for some profound soul-searching. Unfortunately, we're talking about Robyn, and I think she is probably not capable of seeing it that way.

It appears that we are in for a rough winter in terms of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) cases. RSV is a contagious respiratory virus that commonly affects newborns and infants, and it can be particularly dangerous, even deadly, in premature neonates, who often have long-term pulmonary sequelae and are at high risk of infection for years after birth. Of course, older kids and even adults can get RSV, too, and it's actually the most common cause of lower respiratory tract infection (pneumonia) in kids, but it manifests more like a bad cold than a life-threatening pneumonia. Given her severe neurological disabilities, Luna is at significant risk of becoming seriously ill or even dying from RSV, and it should be on Globyn's radar. There's a vaccine for RSV, but lol. Yeah.

Then, of course, there's COVID, influenza, and all of the other respiratory crud that circulates during the cold months. Luna almost certainly doesn't have a "safe swallow" and probably silently aspirates whenever they do "feeding therapy", so she's at risk of pneumonia from that, too. I also highly doubt she can cough effectively, which means even a minor cold can quickly turn into a potentially fatal issue. Most parents of special needs children go crazy, particularly this time of year, trying to keep their kids from ending up in the doctor's office or hospital, because that is how you pick up the REALLY nasty beasties. I mean, they probably haven't heard about the Healy, though.

It just makes little splints in its own proprietary way that are "thumb splints" that it will add wrist straps too. Nice agonal breathing at the end of the second video.
Thriving.

I think that's Cheyne-Stokes respiration, which can happen on its own or as part of Cushing's triad, an indication of high intracranial pressure and resultant severe brain damage. Just another Tuesday in Empath Land.

Narcissists view all their kids, potato and sentient, as extensions of themselves that exist to get them narcissistic supply. The extent she is capable of acknowledging most of the shit she does to Luna is pointless is likely limited, since her capacity to view other people as individuals is limited. She likely wouldn't care either way as long as she kept getting asspats and had the ability to take selfies.

NPD parents can't be compared to how healthy ones think or might view their kids. They don't have the capacity to do that.
