How do you even get into the deeper levels of networking for ISPs and the like? I've been in tech for a long time, and that always interested me a lot more than the bit janitoring shit I do now.

If I had to guess, you'd have to get a CCNP or some equivalent certification and get on with an ISP where you do that for a living and make that your specialty. Networking people who can do pass the tests and get a CCIE without crying out of frustration are in demand (at least last time I checked years ago). So get on a NOC and work your way up I guess? Networking isn't really my thing though so I could be totally wrong.

depending on who 1776 is actually IX'd with, the upstream peers will change almost randomly, as the big tier 1 ISPs slowly reshuffle their BGP stuff (it's like AGP but B) around. As long as path(s) are found and nobody is advertising that they CAN reach the ASN and then blackholing the traffic, it's probably just normal machinations.

Used to be pure skill or nepotism. When there were more smaller ISPs, they had small staff. You either got in by being a buddy of the owner or existing senior staff, or ground your way in by learning how everything worked on the fly, while repairing their janky broken internal infrastructure that was being held together with pipe cleaners and duct tape.

Now with there being few local ISPs and it being all major providers, you get certs and get in that way. Often internships pay off if you do one as part of a degree or expensive cert training program.

This tool doesn't give a totally accurate picture and it seems like Jersh, and/or Terrahost and/or the upstream Tier ones are messing with the BGP alot lately. For the time being it's probably better to use https://ping.pe/kiwifarms.net to check if there's global connectivity or not, and there does appear to be now. Either that or break out the CCNP books/vids and packet tracer and start teaching yourself BGP (it's a complicated topic even for network engineers, good luck).

I think the second is the key - I don't know about how BGP works but I do know it's supposed to help find the "best path" from one network to another, even if multiple are available. It's intentional that a route would disappear if there are other better routes (I think).

Also now that it's working Jersh may be adjusting in response to DDoS or just cost.

KF encourages disagreement and seems to collectively respect people who disagree. We choose to get along, we share our opinions, find common ground, and call people faggots. The only one here "doing it for free" is Josh, but he's carrying more than just internet freedom on his back and it's honestly breathtaking.
