I really don't know why anyone thought Zeldin had any shot in New York.

Trump changed New York.

Pre Trump 2016, upstate voted like ME etc. Even W lost it to Kerry. Trump won it in 2016 and barely lost it in 2020. A massive swing from Romney. Same thing on Staten and Long Island in 2016. Then in 2020 they shifted with the environment left, but stayed right of where they were.

That wouldn't matter except Trump then ran far ahead of his 2016 showing in NYC. In effect, despite losing support in upstate and LI, he picked up support in NYC going from 36 to 37 percent.

Zeldin could and should wind up with mid forties, which is insanely good for a republican statewide in New York. Look at everyone talking about Texas and essentially Beto's in the mid forties.

It's a major shift considering ten years ago New York was an ocean with scattered red dots.
