we really need to go back to that time. like i grew up at a time where it was seen as insane to tell anyone your name or even show pictures because the internet was 99 percent pedos and serial killers and any crumb of info they get from you would obviously mean they would show up at your house the next day. that was the stuff that was ingrained into our minds as kids then when stuff like myspace became big things changed people started posting their real names and pictures of themselves and their friends.

the fact that there are actual children who are actively telling any random person they talk to online their whole life story is just plain depressing. i say this as someone who loved talking to strangers back in the day. but the thing is i never told them my real name or where i lived or anything of the sort because i knew better.

people now should know better even more honestly especially when you can go on twitter and see all these fucking lunatics talking about map pride or zoo pride or telling kids to troon out and start shooting up bathtub hormones because some weirdo on twitter whos like 10 or more years older than them told them it was totally the cool smart thing to do.

its just so depressing that people in my generation who grew up knowing the dangers of the internet and the risks of putting your whole life out there are having kids and just letting them do whatever the fuck they want then getting surprised when their kid goes missing or troons out or whatever else.

This reminds me of what I believe was a college Physics I math problem where we were taught to reason out stuff with ballpark estimates. A sample question was: Would $1 million worth of gold fit in a standard size brief case? It seems like those touting this occurrence as something that could happen often yet serendipitous don't know how combinatorics and ballpark estimates work. Sure, what they've suggested can happen, but it's so statistically infrequent, that it would be seen as an outlier if it happened even once in one's lifetime.

Agreed. I still recall a college classmate using IRC to talk to someone from Singapore in real time and it was the most amazing thing at the time. I, too, was part of the generation that was told never to give out too much personal information online and it still drives people - especially the younger generation - batty when I refuse to disclose that information.

I think what concerns me is that students in my part of Kiwiland get a presentation from local law enforcement about online behavior (focusing mostly on not giving out personal info and that sending lewds as a minor is considered sending CP) yet those same students seem to ignore the advice. I've heard stories of high school students who attend these lessons but still send strangers selfies of themselves wearing school apparel such as varsity jackets or team uniforms that clearly identifies their school, which - if the school name is unique enough - also makes it easy to determine their hometown and/or their dox.

I get the parents are busier now than in generations past, but the lack of parental guidance and supervision when it comes to home internet usage is definitely scary and cause for concern - especially with all kinds of pests eager to groom minors into some sort of harmful situation the moment the latter discloses something they shouldn't to an internet stranger.

As much as I doubt LFJ has abandoned their crusade, I suspect they may be trying to keep it under the radar more. It would certainly make sense with privating Twitter, deleting tweets, removing related posts off cohost, and hiding out on what seems like an obscure irc network.

I'm not sure if he's preparing to strike back. Maybe his employer told him to cut down the 'tism a bit, because he's been acting like a rabid dog on social media instead of, you know, doing his actual job.
