And yet fought for months, and gave up only as they pretty much ran out of ammo . In Kherson there were supposedly 14k russian troops, with only some issues with supply routes. And they gave up immediately

That doesn't make sense, even if Russia moved its IDAS network back to the Crimean peninsula (~<60 miles in Armiansk) they'd still be within the scan, lock-on, and engagement range of Russian long range air defenses. Helicopters maybe free reign, but definitely not jets.

You never shoot at the edge of your detection range because missiles can be kinetically defeated. A missile calculates an intercept path and starts flying towards where the aircraft will be at the time of impact. This means that a pilot can force a missile to waste its energy by forcing new predicted intercept paths, and this is effective at longer ranges.
They also received AGM-88 HARM missiles to jury rig to their MiG-29s and Su-27s, so you don't want to keep the radar turned on for too long.
In a perfect world you'd want the enemy to enter you no escape zone and only push the button when your probability of kill is very high.

Thing is, before and at the start of the war he had some pretty good takes, biased in favor of the russians and seperatists but he gave a good account of the professional forces in the russian forces and what tanks and materials they had, and he was giving an accurate report about what the russians intended to do at the start of the war and in the east. But he doubled down when it was clear that the russians got too ballsy and invaded without having the manpower and logistics for a quick invasion and kept coping for months until his sperging on October haven't seen him since though if you're curious you could check his older account also named Givi, he posted a lot of info there.

Welp, this has been an embarrassment for the russians, they transfered the civilian population over so that they could prepare for urban combat but ended up giving the city away without a fight

Fighting in practically encircled city with little to no way to resupply is too big brain of a move for Russians. Only Ukrainians were smart enough to pull it off in Mariupol.
They either hold the line outside of Kherson or they retreat. There is no other way if they don't want the whole grouping killed or forced to surrender.

They didn't even really transfer the civilian population in full, it seems they really just got collaborators and pro-Russian population out.

That was all that was asked from them, really. Average Russian does not care much about what happens in Ukraine in terms of territory, as long as Crimea is not threatened. But he is quite sensible to abandonment of "our own".
As funny as it is, domestically, withdrawal aren't seen in that bad of a light. Surovkin is a HARD man who had to make HARD decisions to SAVE lives of RUSSIAN soldiers. Or something like that. Now that mobilized are involved, it is even more of a boost to his reputation in Russia itself among the people. (Ukrainians understand this and try to invent faults in withdrawal process itself on the fly.) But you can't win Internet argument or peddle jingoistic propaganda by pointing out how masterfully your side retreats, so people on the Internet and on state tv will mold and seethe for quite some time.

Only if a Ukrainian counter-offensive is so decisive and successful that Russian morale is irretrievably broken, ending the war through any means becomes a major concern in Russia and Putin has to do it to save his own government. In my opinion neither side, but especially Russia, can be defeated through equipment losses or even through casualties, something decisive must happen in this war for it to end.......

The US would do a Syria on like 2/3 of Mexico though, the federal government only really controls the northern border crossings (because the US has its people a few feet away), the biggest highways, and (most of) the middle third of the country. Everything else is either semi-anarchy of rival cartels and their local gangs, or a veneer of government control by local and state officials on the take \

What's really ironic about this is Russia made the same mistake the Nazis did during Barbarossa...they figured the Untermenschen Slavs were no match for the Aryan Wehrmacht only to find out those subhumans were every bit their equal if not even tougher thanks to the harshness of the Stalin period. The Russians thought the inferior Ukrainians were disobedient vassals who would immediately fold and submit to their rightful master.
