The subtext behind the word indigenous is that such peoples are not only native to a given area (i.e indigenous) but have also experienced displacement by a dominant group who are new (or newer) to the area. This isn't often said openly but indigenous is still a very useful term when understood in this way. It means the Sami, Ainu, Comanche and Zulu are indigenous but Japanese, English, Swedes and Koreans are not (even though they have been in their respective lands for ages).I find the Ainu fascinating, but they're a good head scratcher for who is allowed to claim indigenous status.
If the Japanese are not indigenous to Japan, then what are they?
I really hope we hear more from students. I'd love to know how JY is perceived and gossiped about on campus.
