Yes this is absolutely a thing in Canada. There was recently a big case in the media where an 'indigenous' professor was outed as being white and was subsequently forced to resign. It's a tricky thing to navigate though since one can be considered indigenous via adoption or kinship without having indigenous blood. If you have a total lack of shame though (like JY), you may just be able to get away with it.
