Just Stop Oil - A conglomerate of unwashed, pseudoscience-pedalling, virtue-signalling, middle-class cunts.

I think they fucked up some Ferraris today.
Ferraris that were built years ago and probably do less than a few hundred miles a year, they will contribute almost nothing in terms of pollution.
You really cannot make this shit up.
No working class person drives a ferrari unless you consider Doctors working class (which technically they are) since they are still wage earners.

Ferraris' that were built long before climate change was an issue. Ferraris' that sit in a garage all year and rarely get driven. Ferraris' that will contribute less greenhouse gas a year than your phone.

Brainless bint.

If she were more honest it would run like this:

Interviewer: "Why don't you go to the COP? conference? There are oil lobbyists at the COP conference"

JSO slut: "I can't go and interfere with my colleagues' work! They only let so many oil people attend!"

Also:

What is her obsession with +1.5°C about? Why will this purportedly lead to a breakdown of the rule of law? That sounds like a religious belief, and not a very sensible one.

I hate to break it to the lady, but even if we stop burning everything NOW the temperature will continue to rise for quite a while.

Guy should also have asked her what her position on nuclear power is. That would have been interesting.

Unfortunately he's just a journalist and therefore not very capable of original thought.

@abdulaziz Unless you're referring to something else, that was 2 weeks ago.

But yes, the hypocrisy is palpable. A 1980s Ferrari, before you do anything else with it, is already likely more of a net positive to the environment than a new car given how much time it's existed in its current form. The metal, wood, and petroleum-derived parts like plastic have essentially become free, both in terms of cost and resources, since they were made so long ago.
It's related to a pet theory I've lived by for years - things are only as expensive as the amount of times and length of time you use them. The first photo you take with a $500 camera on the first day you own it will be the most expensive one you ever take. By the time you take your 1000th with it a few years down the line, they're mere cents apiece, and far cheaper to keep using rather than buying a new camera.
Also, unless you're Harry Metcalfe, you aren't going to be driving a car like a 30 year old Ferrari every single day. Not to the shops at least. An average car in the US drives 14,000 miles each year. An old Ferrari drives less than 2,000. And most of those will be spent down motor/highways going between shows as opposed to constant stopping and starting in traffic, so those miles are largely "hollow" if you could call them that.

Bit of a hint, since you came in with the July flood like I did; this isn't Reddit. Single spaces are good enough.

Also I still don't see what there would be worth "saving face" for in regards to oil. It's a dying industry and Big Tech is far more relevant in this day and age. Nothing they say or do will make the common people forget Valdez or BP (even though wind turbines have done and continue to do far worse) or a bunch of other stuff. The image is far too deeply ingrained in the public psyche; it only took 75 years for national socialism to start to look appealing again to the likes of Italy and Sweden, but you'll probably never, ever see it in Germany or an English-speaking nation ever again. Same goes for oil. The sight of dying birds smothered in crude oil, smog clouds choking out the Los Angeles skyline (and Shanghai's), and Gore/Moore's grifty, shifty faces guarantee the public will never have a positive perception on oil. Fuck it, look at how palm oil is looked upon for instance. NPCs will still eat Nestle chocolate because they aren't committed, but the knowledge of their business practices will stick with them.

Of their side, Roger Hallam is a fruitcake, Greta is a mindless goblin, and Johnathon Porritt is the proto-urbanist, and they're the three most relevant figures in this race. If they're controlled-op, they have really committed to the roles to have played them for as long as they have. I'm not doubting for a second there's hypocrites in the ranks, but mainly because they're attention whores seeking free attention for their own personal gain, like that actress someone posted a short while back. If they were offered to wear a sandwich board that said "I Hate Niggers", that's what they'd do if it meant their face got plastered on magazines and websites. In the 20th Century, you could have got away with something like this, but this is the present. You can talk about the weather and within 5 minutes, those against you will be rattling off the names of your third cousins. If these people have connections to the oil industry, we would know by now. Especially since they're public figures. And I just don't see it.

+1.5°C is their central Big Lie btw. The cornerstone on which all their ideology is built. If I haven't posted it already (might have done in the other thread):

This is how it mostly works nowadays. Find a "pattern" in a load of noise to extrapolate a bullshit conclusion for the purpose of fearmongering, and you can officially call yourself a "scientist" and turn up to all the cult meetings.

I have to admit, I do have a soft spot for Harry. I've seen him at several events and he's always super friendly.
He did drive his Testarossa to the Sahara desert.

Occupational habit, and one I'm not going to be broken of easily. Most of my non-KF writing is of official documents and opinions, and you separate paragraphs like that in those (goes back to when typewriters were used, apparently). Never been on Reddit, I don't see the point of a "discussion" site where you can downvote comments out of the discussion.

Yet the British still put petrol in their cars, and electricity has to be generated somehow.

look at how palm oil is looked upon for instance. NPCs will still eat Nestle chocolate because they aren't committed, but the knowledge of their business practices will stick with them.
Palm oil for use as a biodiesel? I know there was a lot of propaganda against using plant oils in fuels when the practice first started in the 2000s, most of it generated by the oil industry. These days they form part of the commercial diesel mix in areas where they are produced).

Doesn't make sense to single out palm oil though. In fact, it is probably the most energy-dense plant oil in existence and not ideal for cooking (palm oil has a high freezing point, to the point that it solidifies overnight except in a high tropical summer, and this is only the start of the problems), making it one of the best plant oils for use in diesel.

As for Nestlé, supporting that company out of some "principle" is ludicrous. Nestlé has a record down there with Exxon-Mobil, Union Carbide and Philip Morris Tobacco when it comes to environmental responsibility, having dried up several agricultural regions and significantly lowered an aquifer's level in their dedication to providing bottled water to the world by pumping water out of their boreholes until they run dry. If you hate your neighbours, sell your borehole to Nestlé.

This is what makes them useful and worth shunting money to. I don't think energy companies are looking to portray themselves as great and good (that battle has been long lost, as you rightfully point out), but rather as a necessary evil.

Organisations like JSO exemplify the shrieking idiocy of late-80s environmentalism, but as amplified as an obnoxious Tik-Tok. They alienate the public, and any and all proponents of non-fossil fuel energy may be seen as similar to them and not worth considering.

Such discrediting of environmentalism and conservationism would be desirable to the oil industry.

Regarding the 1.5°:

The dataset you gave is not amenable to statistical analysis due to its size(lack thereof to be precise). I'd also use the median over the mean, but that may be personal.

What do they actually believe will happen when the magic 1.5° point is reached? The world bursting into flames? The Rapture? (If they say irreversibility that is bullshit - that point was reached long ago).

I've exposed myself to a lot of JSO twaddle and cannot find this out, although they all throw the number around.

1.5 just seems a bit convenient of a number, almost like they made it up to put into their soundbites.

Just Stop Oil activists cover Barclays Aberdeen HQ in orange paint

Three people have been arrested in connection with the incident on Union Street.

Just Stop Oil activists have splattered orange paint over Barclays headquarters in Aberdeen in protest over the corporation's investment in the fossil fuel industry.

Three campaigners were seen throwing the paint over the windows of the Silver Fin building on Union Street at 12pm on Monday. They then stood with a 'Just Stop Oil' banner in front of the offices.

Multiple officers have been photographed at the scene speaking with the activists. Police have confirmed that three people have been arrested in connection with the incident.

The action comes after Extinction Rebellion Scotland campaigners broke the windows at Barclays new offices in Glasgow. Two activists donned safety gloves and goggles to destroy the glass panes at the office block on Clyde Place Quay at around 8am on Monday, with further disruption expected this afternoon.

Its all part of a day of national action across the UK, led by Extinction Rebellion aimed at Barclays with over 100 of the banks’ offices and branches targeted with paint, posters, fake oil and crime scene tape.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were made aware of paint thrown at a building on Union Street in Aberdeen shortly after 12.05pm on Monday, 14 November.

“Officers from Aberdeen city centre attended and three people, aged 24, 23 and 22 have been arrested in connection with the incident.

“Enquiries are ongoing and anyone with any further information can call 101, quoting reference 1259 of 14 November.”

In a video posted online, Roger Hallam, who is accused of being one of the organisers of Just Stop Oil, gave an extraordinary prediction of the impact of climate change claiming it would result in rape and violence.

He said: “What will happen is that a group of young men will come into your home, they take your girlfriend, they take your mother, they put her onto the table and they gang rape her in front of you and then after that they take a hot stick and they poke out your eyes and they blind you that is the reality of the annihilation project that you face.”

Spicy take on immigration, climate bro.

Another example of extreme simp from the Guardian and its readers (though out of three the Guardian selected, two of them seem to be anti-JSO):

Just Stop Oil activists are an example to us all

We all have a part to play in compelling decision-makers to take the climate crisis seriously, writes James Pertwee. Plus letters from Kristian Ravnkilde and Stan Labovitch

The question posed by Polly Toynbee (To those who sneer at activists blocking roads: what are you doing to save the planet?, 10 November) should be put not just to the sneerers but to every one of us. Politicians will not take the issue seriously until they believe there is overwhelming support from the community at large.

We don’t have to take disruptive action, but we do need to make our feelings known to decision-makers. Sending an email to your local MP is easy. If all of them were to receive huge numbers of messages from constituents, that would make any government take notice. We cannot just blame leaders for not doing enough: everyone has a part to play.
James Pertwee
Malvern, Worcestershire

Thank you, Polly Toynbee, for standing up for Just Stop Oil. As you say, nothing else has worked and the many young people involved are scared for their future, as we older people are scared for our grandchildren’s. There is no single sure-fire approach to getting the groundswell of public support that will force politicians to take action. There is a cohort that loves a wartime analogy – how about regarding Just Stop Oil activists as like the French resistance fighting an existential threat?
Kristian Ravnkilde
Beeston, Nottinghamshire

Polly Toynbee should be putting that question to the protesters themselves. Their fundamentalist take on human rights, in which their right to protest trumps the right of folk to peacefully go about their business, alienates the very people they need to convince. Democracy is not about unilateral demands, it’s about rigorous debate.

Anadolu Agency (Turkish state run media):

We need systemic not individual change in the face of climate crisis: Just Stop Oil

There is no better time for world to start transitioning towards renewable energy, says spokesman Alex De Koning

ANKARA

The world need a systematic change to prevent destruction caused by climate change, said an official from a British-based environmental group known for recent high-profile protests at art galleries.

In an interview with Anadolu Agency, Alex De Koning, 24, spokesman for the group Just Stop Oil, stressed the importance of non-violent protests, stepping up civil resistance, and putting pressure on governments "to make more change."

"Because without that pressure, they're going to continue delaying until that COP 50," he said – referring to the annual UN climate conferences, with Egypt now holding COP27 – adding that there is not much time left, as every year emissions keep rising to record levels.

Koning downplayed his arrests during protests, calling them not important considering how over 1,700 climate activists have been murdered around the world over the last decade.

According to a report released in September by Global Witness, more than 1,700 people have died while trying to prevent mining, oil drilling, or logging on their lands.

On Just Stop Oil’s activities, including blocking oil pipelines and tankers, he underlined that they are doing this to try to halt all new oil and gas licenses in the UK.

'There’s no better time for us to start transitioning'

"Renewable energies, at least in the UK, are currently nine times cheaper, and it makes no sense to me why we're still not switching to them," said Koning.

He added that the over 100 new oil and gas licenses are expected to open for exploration despite there being more than enough time for a transition to green energy.

Saying that the reason behind this is that fossil fuel industries have "so much power" because of their huge profits, he stressed that in the last three months alone the world’s five biggest oil companies made $100 billion.

He went on to say that this money "can buy a lot of power," and that's why the shift from fossil fuels to renewables is lagging.

"We all know how serious the climate crisis is. We've seen 40 degrees (Celsius, or 104F) in London and we have seen 33 million people displaced in Pakistan. There’s no better time for us to start transitioning," added Koning.

Attacking artwork

Koning said that before recent high-profile protests at museums and art galleries, Just Stop Oil tried other methods like petitions and marches but the problem persisted.

"Any single place you can expect us, at any time," he said, adding that they are going to keep doing this until the government changes its oil and gas policy.

Koning also called these methods successful as the splashy protests caught the world’s eye.

We are having this conversation right now because of these actions, he said. When two people threw soup on a painting by Van Gogh last month, more people talk about the climate crisis then when 33 million people in Pakistan were displaced by devastating floods due to climate change.

He said more people were actually outraged about "one piece of protected artwork" than the tens of millions of people who lost homes and livelihoods.

Hundreds of fossil fuel lobbyists at climate change meeting

Criticizing the ongoing UN climate summit COP27 now being held in Egypt, he said: "I’m 24 years old, and there's been 27 COPs."

Sating that 636 oil and gas lobbyists are attending the COP27 talks, Koning called that figure an "insane amount" but said regardless, the movement is making political progress.

"Last year at COP26, no one even mentioned oil and gas in the final deal," he said, adding: "That's why we need climate action and activism."

Asked if his family is worried about Koning's actions, he said they are worried about his future.

"But not because I’m going to get a criminal record, because of what's coming down the line," he explained.

That reporter (I won't use the word journalistfor her-or many others) from LBC that was arrested stated that she showed the police her press card.

I've no idea what an accredited Press Card looks like. Would the arresting officer know the diffrence between a real Press Card and one made up on Vistaprint?

And who could say, at that time, that she wasn't an accomplice? She was released in the end, once her credentials and story were substantiated.

Journalism is a dying profession, and she is proof of it. Send her off to report from a war zone.

Speaking of slebs, I wonder what chris packham thinks of all this. He was all in on XR and its spin-offs a few years ago, but he's gone absolutely silent on the subject since mid-2021.

You will find a lot of "truth tellers" "speaking truth to power" and "skeptics" all turn in to the establishments enforcers once they get their pet causes through. Rage For The Machine is in full effect. When they get in to the panel show cycle, they change to be BBC ass lickers. That promote the message.
