I used to get ads for GM trucks, Coca Cola, expensive watches and stuff. Normal stuff. I had turned off targeted tracking from the start so it should have just been serving me a random selection, perhaps chosen based on geographic location from the IP.

It’s never given me an ad like that in 10 years I’ve been using it. Always generic.
And in any event, that is not what I read about on Twitter, I use it for one obscure technical subject and quietly laughing at lolcows - primarily Musk.

Edit: I don’t know why this is causing surprise or doubt, it’s just an amusing illustration of the established fact that all the advertisers worth having are gone, and only shit-tier right wing political organisations are in the game now. Talk about circling the drain.

You should've seen the twitter of the past, around the GG era. The low interactions you are seeing are the result of the various automated shadowbans and deboosting. The platform is truly insane, it's somewhat of an autism puzzle to decipher it, everything matters, from you having a phone number attached to acct., to location of account, VPN use, frequency of tweets, who you like and RT, and obviously the contents of your tweets. There are also different "deboost" types depending on what sort of "bad behavior" you're engaging in.
Worst, most people don't even know they are just shouting in the void. All is subtle and made so that you remain on the platform and consooom, oblivious that nobody sees your tweets. They don't want you to know, so that you don't make a new account to clear up the deboosts.

If Elon discloses how the retarded algorithm deboosts replies then it would be a fantastic improvement.

It would probably make Twitter less of a shithole for the normies too.

He's being cowardly as hell and if he was really going to bring Trump back he would have just done it. Elon is even making excuses for limiting people's reach on Twitter, which shows how little things are going to change. At this point I won't be surprised if he intensifies the shadowbanning.

Censoring tweets rather than accounts isn't an improvement. Twitter likely decides you're into different topics based on who you follow, reply to, and how you phrase things. How would Twitter then decide you were about to do a hateful tweet (the thing Elon says should be censored)? I seriously doubt they'd ignore their current shadowban procedures, so I can't help but think they're going to just try fixing it up a little and then tell Elon the problem is fixed just the way he wanted.

Because what's the alternative? Elon risks losing some ad revenue because the wrong person had their tweet show up alongside a trending hashtag?

I think you'll find that a lot of the big brands had suspended advertising on twitter some time in september, over the platform's apparent inability to deal with child sexual assault material. Coca Cola and GM were among them, for the record.
