The entire appeal of Shenmue is the excellent snapshot of small town Japan in 1986. The plot of the game doesn't matter, and it's a very cozy experience if you're not bothered by the Y2K visuals and hilarious voice acting. You can play with Japanese voices in the remaster. Most video games simply are unable to decently capture real life settings they're based on. The ones that manage to do so I just find fascinating.
Yakuza series (sadly I've never been to Japan but it feels like Sega has done a great job creating a pastiche/parody of Japanese city life)
