US Five people killed and at least 18 injured in mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Colorado

Five people were killed Saturday night at a gay nightclub in Colorado Springs, Colorado, police announced. Another 18 people were injured in the mass shooting at Club Q.

“They did locate one individual who we believe to be the suspect inside,” said Colorado Springs Police Lt. Pamela Castro. “At this point in time, the suspect is being treated, but is in custody.

Castro did not clarify whether the suspect was included in the count of people who were injured in the shooting.

Police declined to speak about a possible motive. Colorado Springs Fire Capt. Mike Smaldino said 11 ambulances responded to the scene after multiple 911 calls were received.

“We will be here for many, many hours to come,” said Castro.

In a statement on social media, Club Q said it was “devastated by the senseless attack on our community” and offered condolences to victims and their families.

“We thank the quick reactions of heroic customers that subdued the gunman and ended this hate attack,” the statement said.

California MAGA Republican Assemblyman Randy Voepel is the grandfather of Colorado Springs shooting suspect Anderson Lee Aldrich, according to media reports.

Colorado Springs police arrested Aldrich, 22, following a mass shooting at the LGBT venue Club Q on Saturday that left five people dead and 25 injured.

According to multiple reports, including The San Diego Union-Tribune, records showed Aldrich's mother is Laura Voepel, daughter of the 72-year-old California state assemblymember.

Randy Voepel served on the Santee City Council as a council member and in 2021 faced condemnation when he compared the January 6 riot at the Capitol in Washington, D.C. to the American Revolutionary War.

Just three days after the riot, Randy Voepel told The Union-Tribune: "This is Lexington and Concord. First shots fired against tyranny. Tyranny will follow in the aftermath of the [Joe] Biden swear-in on January 20."

In a news briefing on Sunday, Colorado Springs police said the motive for shooting was not known and that investigations were being carried out to determine if it was a hate crime.

Newsweek has contacted Voepel's office for comment.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — CBS 8 San Diego learned that the 22-year-old suspect, Anderson Lee Aldrich, accused of opening fire with a semiautomatic rifle inside an LGBTQ nightclub in Colorado Springs, killing five people and leaving 25 injured, is the grandson of outgoing Assemblyman Randy Voepel.

Authorities were called to Club Q [A] at 11:57 p.m. Saturday with a report of a shooting, and the first officer arrived at midnight.

Joshua Thurman said he was in the club with about two dozen other people and was dancing when the shots began. He initially thought it was part of the music until he heard another shot and said he saw the flash of a gun muzzle.

A law enforcement official said that the suspect used an AR-15-style semiautomatic weapon in the Saturday night shooting at Club Q. A handgun and additional ammunition magazines also were recovered, according to the official, who could not discuss details of the investigation publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

CBS 8 investigated the claim that Assemblyman Voepel is related to Anderson Lee Aldrich through a background check system and uncovered Republican Assemblyman Voepel’s daughter is the mother of the Colorado Springs shooting suspect.

According to reports, Assemblyman Randy Voepel previously drew harsh criticism from his colleagues in Sacramento after he compared the January 6th attack at the United State Capitol to the American Revolutionary War.

In a tweet, San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria said, "San Diego grieves for the lives taken by another mass shooting, this time in Colorado Springs."

Authorities said the accused shooter was arrested in 2021 after his mother reported he threatened her with a homemade bomb and other weapons. However, they declined to elaborate on that arrest.

No explosives were found, authorities said at the time, and The Gazette in Colorado Springs reported that prosecutors did not pursue any charges and that records were sealed.

Since 2006, there have been 523 mass killings and 2,727 deaths as of Nov. 19, according to The Associated Press/USA Today database on mass killings in the U.S.

...The shooting is a window into the future. Every time one of these events happens, it makes it more likely that more events will happen. Political violence is going to spin out of control. If I was allowed access to the normal channels of communication, I could make my case as to why people should not go into bars and slaughter child molesters, and most people would agree with it.
