I was giggling at all the posts in the thread about how Mastodon servers are all buckling under the weight of the influx of twats, imagining incompetent hobbyists dabbling in Babby's First RPi server and figuring people were just under-provisioning things leading to the instances falling over.
Then I went and looked at the source code and then thought: "Oh dear."

It's a fucking Ruby on Rails application. 58.4% Ruby, 27.7% Javascript, and only 0.3% HTML and Mustache (HTML templates). Jesus wept.
Pffffft bahahahahahaha! Oh my god this is going to be such a glorious train wreck.
I wonder how hard it'd be to bang together a better implementation of Mastodon in something like Erlang or Elixir. They're both great gatekeeping languages if nothing else. Fuckin' fast too for comms-related activities.
