Methods: This retrospective cross-sectional study utilized a large US-based administrative claims database (deidentified Optum Clinformatics Data Mart Database) to identify youth aged 12-25 years who obtained a diagnosis of TGNC identity and those who pursued GAT. Descriptive statistics estimated distributions of demographic and health characteristics by gender identity. Unadjusted and age-adjusted logistic regression models were used to examine associations between TGNC identity, GAT, and sleep disorders.

yet the authors are going around giving interviews about the study as if it shows GAT improves mental health. From news article:

Wish I had access to the article to take a look at their data analysis but there are plenty of other factors that could result in the subjects with GAT having fewer sleep disorders. other variables I can think of that may play into this relationship: severity of mental health distress, level of care, age, autism diagnosis, medications.

This is a funny one because I sort of agree with Tony, in a limited way. Tony is only saying this, and saying this now, because outlets that previously were swept along by the trans tide have started waking up to some of the concerns about transgenderism. First men in women's sport (Laurel Hubbard, Lia Thomas), now experiments on children (no one gives a shit about female prisoners, it seems).

But yes, the notion of neutral, unbiased journalism is a fairy tale. There's a classic BBC interview by Andrew Marr of Noam Chomsky, where Marr protests that he's not self-censoring, and Chomsky replies that he's sure that Marr believes everything he's saying, "but if you believed something different, you wouldn't be sitting where you're sitting." That was in 1996, and 7 years later amid all the opposition to the invasion of Iraq, Marr stood outside 10 Downing Street saying that Tony Blair had been "proved right" purely because the US-UK invasion faced little initial resistance from the Iraqi armed forces.

That being said, it's possible to minimize bias and control for those variables. There's a long tradition of ethics about how to manage bias, by explicitly disclosing any relationships that might affect bias or naming all the sources and things like that.
