/horror/ general megathread - Let's talk about movies and shit.

As I watched the first act for The Wolf of Snow Hollow, I thought I was watching the latest werewolf horror comedy that was in the spirit of An American Werewolf in London. However as the film went on, it felt more like what I experienced watching Werewolves Within. Out of the main and supporting cast, I only found two characters likable and one of them dies at the halfway point. The reveal of the killer is underwhelming because it never established potential suspects. It's not a werewolf but the town's taxidermist who is actually 6 ft tall and dresses like a wolf during the attacks.

To me, it seems the werewolf genre has not done well in at least a decade.

Late Phases from 2014 is a really awesome werewolf flick. It's a bit of a throwback, effects-wise, which I appreciate.

Nick Damici (In the Cut, Stake Land etc) plays a blind Vietnam veteran who moves into a retirement community with his seeing eye dog, and a werewolf goes on a rampage, so lots of old people getting obliterated. It's on the popcorn side of things but it rules.
Both are good.

I've seen Late Phases several years ago. I'll have to watch it again at some point.

So apparently shout has a copy on tubi or pluto or something that's specifically the old vhs 4:3 of Day of the Dead?.
Like even the line noise at the bottom of the frame

I'm not sure if it's really a grab of a vhs or some faux crap, somebody had it on for a minute at Thanksgiving

Question for everyone. During the opening of the Exorcist, Lancaster Marron finds a statuette of Pazuzu that leads him to a ruined Temple to Pazuzu. After this he says “Evil against Evil…” while holding the head of the statuette and a medallion of St. Joseph.

Later in the story, Father Karras is looking at the drawings/art of Regan to see if she had a disturbed mind for his own psychological evaluation. One of those drawings is of a winged lion which is more likely Lamashtu, a Mesopotamian diety associated with being a cunt to mothers (legitimately the Mesopotamians said she’s just a cunt on her own volition rather than higher purpose).

Interesting enough is that Pazuzu is typically is a demon who was invoked to chase off Lamashtu and had some positive aspects despite being a demon.
So my question is was Marron just trying to pull an SMT and the scene of the Pazuzu statue him pulling out his full party because Karras is a punk ass who can’t fulfill his role as support healer?

According to Shout themselves at least, it really is pan and scan - they did some promotional thing back in 2015

The late-80s public domain VHS aesthetic is so good here. It reminded me of how Goodtimes and Video Treasures also used to release public domain releases on VHS.
 
I watched Winterbeast (1992). I feel disappointed in myself for not having seen this before. Spielberg ruined cinema the very next year by replacing stop motion with CGI.

Joe Begos' Christmas Bloody Christmas is getting limited release at my local theater. Never before would I guess this would happen but we have to thank Terrifier 2 for showing the power of indie horror and opening the door for wider distribution for unrated indies.

I'd say Jurassic Park's CG still holds up way better than most other visual effects ridden movies these day. But yea, Winterbeast is badass.
 
It was between the 90s through 2000s when CGI was a more preferred option, and not just in the animation field that would kill theatrically-released traditional animation from here on out (that fact actually makes me sad still, like really), but also visual effects. Terminator 2, Jurassic Park, The Mask, Independence Day, etc. had pretty much broke new ground when you compare the stuff from the prior two decades.
 
Joe Begos' Christmas Bloody Christmas is getting limited release at my local theater. Never before would I guess this would happen but we have to thank Terrifier 2 for showing the power of indie horror and opening the door for wider distribution for unrated indies.
I got to say it's amazing that Terrifier 2 did so well. Just a small movie like that being able to get that much attention and opening in that many theaters makes me optimistic for the future of indie movies
 
Speaking of Deodato movies, are there any House on the Edge of the Park fans in here? I love Giovanni Lombardo Radice so much, it’s kind of nuts—a friend actually got me a Cameo from him for my birthday where he talked a little about the film—you can tell he still doesn’t completely get why people like these movies so much, but he’s a lot more jovial about them than he used to be, where he’d just straight come out and say that he’d worked on a lot of shit. I think he liked working on this one, though, and he‘s a lot more positive about the experience with Deodato than he was about working with Lenzi on Ferox, where he just shit-talks him nonstop. David Hess is also great in it, with this weird, grotesque charisma and humor, Annie Belle is a super cutie pie, the blond dude who plays her brother—all these very good looking people doing a good job of being totally decadent weirdos; I don’t know, I bought it. The final twist caught me by surprise. I’m a big fan of the whole rape revenge genre, so in some ways I think it‘s more ‘fun‘ than Cannibal Holocaust, although Cannibal Holocaust is (obviously) the more important film of the two.

Cannibal Holocaust did a number on my head for a few days after I first saw it. It’s intense. Shit looks real, he did a great job. You kill a few animals and it certainly helps to blur the lines as to what’s real and what isn’t. Those Italian special effects dudes and the cameramen came together and did some amazing work. I still think the girl sitting on the bike seat looks properly impaled. They also just do a ton of straight up dangerous fuckery that you could never get away with now, like the people in the burning huts. Fucking madman level shit, but a great movie. I got to see it in a packed theater and it was annoying as shit to hear these hipsters laughing at all the bleep bloop music with their shitty hipster irony. Little did they know that the bleep bloop signifies the most fucked scenes are now underway and a bunch of them ended up leaving in a huff. Good times.

Back in the late nineties I got a hold of David Hess, and we had an email correspondence going for a bit that was pretty cool—I had a lot of questions about Autostop Rosso Sangue and if he was trying to play Adam as a sort of kid to Franco Nero and Corrine Clery in some perverse way and he was very happy, said that was indeed one of his intentions with the character, that in his head they were meant to be a dysfunctional family. It wasn’t a direction he was given but it was how he saw the character, so he played it that way. Who knows if it was true, or if he was just glad to talk to someone about his films. This was still in the days when horror conventions weren’t so much of a thing, so I really lucked into talking with him. It sucks because I lost those emails on a hard drive about five years back, if I had them I’d definitely be sharing them. You always hear or read that he was a hardass, or an asshole, and he may have been but in my experience he was a friendly dude.
