For the most part, the talented people in every field either become glowies outright, kowtow the cultural zeitgeist, or put on a face to get through their day. It's people like Null, talented and open to calling out the bullshit, who are the outliers. Most security people from the 80s-00s who were notorious and often times got arrested would either wind up working for the government or found various security companies. Case in point: with regard to Twitter, they hired Mudge (power word Peiter Zatko) in 2020 to head security, and in 2022 he filed a whistleblower complaint to the US Congress. Before that, he worked for DARPA, but before even that, in the 90s, he was part of a hacking group called "l0pht", who gained such notoriety that they testified before Congress about how shitty software is and the weaknesses in the Internet infrastructure:
