Mastodon - "Decentralized" Twitter Knockoff & Rat King Breeding Ground

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
To be fair, the right-wing side of the Fediverse has also collapsed into hysterical screeching.
That's an inevitable result of how all these social media places function, rather than due to any particular political alignment. The way mastodon is designed alleviates a little of it, by allowing longer-form posts, but it still relies on the same feedback loop that rewards insularity, thought-terminating cliché, and hugboxing over genuine discourse.

This is a real tweet:

The creator of Blockpartyapp had a post deleted off Mastodon and is complaining about it on Twitter:

what the fuck is casteism?

Mastodon instances are filling up and running out of space quickly... but hey, they're far-left so they have to welcome all the Twatter refugees filling up space, otherwise they're hypocrites.

If you are running your own #mastodon #instance your storage will fill up pretty quickly, as Mastodon will cache any images, videos etc, from your federated feed. (I have racked up 16GB in just two weeks, on my tiny single user instance.) By default that cache doesn't ever appear to be cleared out, which not only leads to inherently unlimited growth, but is probably a #gdpr / data protection nightmare too.

BTW, isn't he basically inadvertently describing an effective way to DDoS a Mastodon instance? Correct me if I am misinterpreting this, but apparently all you need to nuke an instance is make an army of Mastodon socks and start filling up an instance with random high-resolution images/videos/etc.

After banning people for such blatant violations as "being a journalist", "being a capitalist" and "being anti-war", Mastodon outdid themselves as only they can and proceeded to ban someone for... not using their account, which is likely an unforgiveable insult on Mastodon:

I swear, go and read that whole thread, it's a riot. Also, check out the avatars of the people participating: clearly a number of them are aging GenXers who can't make sense of Mastodon.

Also, this is what it looks like (from an account telling named "Desktop from Hell", LMAO):

So Mastodon looks... like a row of columns, just like some fucking spreadsheet. BTW, I love how immediately you have an even greater nerd showing up in a reply tweet, who warns people "do not use the official Mastodon app" and then tries to spam some other obscure app (or alt++ tech) that probably gives you even moar columns on your "Desktop from Hell", LMAO!

“Twitter is an incredibly intricate technology stack that is fragile and will fail in days. And we’re going to replicate it with some small-dev project build on rails and currently going off them”

I thought you were kidding about it being on rails but I checked and...it's Ruby on Rails on the server side. That's got to be slow as fuck - it's not gonna scale well at all.

Twitter started out as Ruby code but they switched to Scala a long time ago.

A lot of servers use pleroma (which is implemented in elixir/erlang) instead of mastodon.

For obvious reasons, pleroma is a lot faster than mastodon, especially at small scales.

But that being said, I don't think I'd say mastodon is slow because of ruby, so much as it requires a shitton of ram.

Mastodon newbie Chris: Mastodon is way too technical. Why do I have two @-s in my address? Why do I have to choose a server? Why don't you just assign people a server? Why not assign one based on performance/connection speed/how crowded it already is? If you use technical jargon and make the tool non-obvious, you're selecting for tech-savvy users and excluding the rest.

Mastodon nerd RenHavingFun: Because that's the point. It's not a product. The whole point is to be decentralized. The point is to curate your experience to be exactly what you want. Not that hard.

Mastodon newbie Chris: ?!

Chris intellectually peaked in elementary school - needs to be told what to do and can't handle personal choice, lmao. Sad!

The "why does this need to be so complicated" reaction that people give when presented with choice always gets me. It really shows how badly our society has been psyoped into just doing whatever the authorities tell them. Choice has become a foreign concept to them.

"If Beyonce decides to join a Mastodon server, that's gonna kill Mastodon"

Mastodon nerds are so glad to have all those Twatter refugees over:
