James Cameron's Avatar to get four sequels - The message will still be the same

Cheap ass, couldn't even invent a new villain. Can't wait to see how they squirrel their way out of his death in the first film.
It's 100% bullshit, but I love it. Apparently the world tree of life brought him back? Absolute nonsense.

The only other way they would have made me see it was if Arnold was the main villain. I wonder wtf ever happened about that, he was rumored for the longest time before they outright denied it.

They are bringing back our hero as a blue man.

The quality of this movie will entirely depend on how much screen time and over the top writing this son of a gun has.

Fuck, I gotta see it now. Hope he drinks blue space coffee while on a dragon and fights Jake again, but using a Fred Flintstone ass bamboo mech with an even bigger knife!

After reading most of this thread, I swear I have to be one of the only people on here who legitimately likes this film and is excited for the sequel.

Do I think it’s an absolutely perfect, flawless film? Hell no.

I think the first movie definitely struggles a lot with pacing, characterization, and retreading worn-down story beats, and all of this combined definitely keeps the film from reaching it’s full potential. That being said, I still have a soft spot for it. I recently went and watched the rerelease in theaters about a month ago, and I’m not ashamed to admit that seeing it in IMAX 3D was honestly some of the most fun I’ve had in a movie theater in a very long time.

I’m personally interested in the sequels because i‘m genuinely intrigued by where the story/characters could go next. I still think there’s a lot of room for the upcoming movies to improve on whatever flaws the first one had and flesh everything out more.

Regardless of what others say, I think Pandora is a badass planet and an example of worldbuilding/alien biology done right (and no, I’m not saying it’s perfect, but I think it’s solid nonetheless.) I’m a sucker for unorthodox or unique creature/flora designs and to me Avatar excels in that aspect.

It’s clear, at least to me, that despite its shortcomings a lot of love, passion, and thought was put into this film’s setting/visual effects, and as an artist I can respect that.

I can also respect that Cameron and his team are seemingly trying to stand out and tell their own story with its own world with this sequel rather than put out the 5 billionth big-budget reboot, adaption, slapped-on sequel/midquel/prequel, reimagining, retelling, “based on a true story/events” schlock that’s constantly been pushed out these past several years.

And that’s not to say that all cases of that are particularly bad either; one of my favorite horror films is IT (2017).
But after a while, you just get burnt out, at least I have.

Maybe my expectations will be exceeded when Way of Water finally drops; Maybe it won’t and I’ll end up eating my words. Either way, I’ll just have to wait and see when it finally comes out.

I was one of the few haters when the original came out so I respect your going against the flow of the thread. At the time I was annoyed with how much praise the film got from everyone when I felt like it was a bad Dance with Wolves in space. To be fair my dislike of it is more based in my autistic neckbeard nick picking. I suspect that a lot more people are open to seeing it than actively hate on it since haters tend to be louder than anyone else. People liked the visuals of the first series and a lot will see any sequels just because of that. So outside of this thread you’re probably in the majority.

My entire problem with the movie is its expecting me to root for the main character dooming his civilization for a blue cat girl wifu when the "villain" is so awesome. But otherwise I did enjoy the movie. It is a fun romp, with legit impressive effects and interesting ideas. Even with a flawed plot it is told and conveyed in such a way to be enjoyed however you view it.

Besides I respect Cameron immensely for literally telling em to fuck off when they said they wanted the sequel trimmed down.

I take it you've never seen Dances with Wolves.

Nah, I have. And I enjoyed that movie as well.

Again, I never said i think the film is the strongest in terms of its story . It’s story and characters definitely struggle to stand out on their own. That’s why Im hoping the sequels can better improve on what we got.

Maybe the sequels will improve, but right now and up until I see the movie, I still have some strong doubts.

I really don't think it was a strong film. Technology really drove it, the character and stories were old tropes that had no improvement, hence my question. I think The Last Samurai was the last good type of this theme we got.

Yeah, I’ll agree with you on that. But hey, even if it’s no masterpiece, I still love it.

I had a good time seeing the original Avatar way back when, but the whole subtext of the movie is so creepy when looking back.

Not only does it come off as globohomo transhumanism propaganda, there's also the racial subtext, as a white man gives up his body to become a "POC coded" alien species after fighting a bunch of evil white men who want to colonize a planet, it anticipates the "decolonization" movement of the last decade and change, as well as heralding the return of wussified 90s culture after the edgy 2000s.

That said, Pandora's visual design is very creative and it stands out even more now as movies have gotten blander and blander from a visual design perspective (take Avenger's Endgame's final battle for one example), Avatar 2 will definitely deliver in the eye popping visuals aspect, the question is, will it have a deeper story or just be more "man bad, nature good" horeshit?

Second one will dissapoint, third will bomb, fourth is direct to Roku/Netflix/Peacock.

Yeah, I’ll agree with you on that. But hey, even if it’s no masterpiece, I still love it.
Fair enough, I disagree but I won't trash you for it. I like plenty of movies other people don't myself.

No it isn't, it's the most lazy metaphor possible with every living entity having a literal usb connection to the planet. It sinks the entire environmental message because humans don't have the ability to stick their dick into mother Gaia to become one with nature.

Maybe I just think the Alien fauna look cool (I’m not counting the Na’Vi here as even I’m partial to their designs).

I like the hexapedal body plan of most of the animals and the bioluminescence of everything, I like how a good chunk of the wildlife’s designs look to have been inspired by marine life (like the giant sea anemone things that curl up when touched, or how the banshee look vaguely fishlike. The Thanator looks to have been inspired somewhat by the Sarcastic Fringehead, a type of fish). I like the little fan lizards and the Direhorses. Hell, I especially like how absolutely massive everything is in comparison to Earth in terms of scale.

If I had to pick, I’d say the Na’Vi are probably my least favorite aspect of the world itself. The potential is there, but the execution is poor. Their designs and concepts are incredibly lackluster compared to all of the other creatures and plants that live alongside them.

They don’t even really feel like they belong on Pandora, more like they were added at the last minute without any regards as to making their designs make sense in the context of their setting. Not even the little lemur creatures we see in one scene really make up for it. They’re supposed to be some sort of Inbetween showing the evolution of the Na’Vi, like monkeys to humans, but in their case it doesn’t really work and just raises more questions than answers.

can blue cat people drink coffee or is it too hot for blue cat tongue

Caffeine is sadly toxic to cats. There's always decaf. But that ain't a real man's coffee.

Anyway, this underwater stuff looks like it's tedious. I don't understand WTF is going on in the trailer and the movements are awkward. I find the blue space cat lady with the huge animu eyes disturbing. The children all look weird. I mean it is pretty much a CGI cartoon with some humans thrown in. I guess you have to expect that it's going to look a little freaky to some people.

Pandora is cool, the Na’Vi are ugly and stupid.

The movie should have been The Abyss in space, a group of humans exploring a lush alien world, making the surprising discovery of the connection all the living things there share, but no "intelligent life" like the Na’Vi, or rather the reveal the whole planet is "intelligent life"

Maybe throw in some drama with space marines (there to protect them from hostile wildlife) wanting to strip mine the planet for resources, again, much like The Abyss and the Navy SEALS, for some action and drama, but instead of "Dances With Wolves in space" make it a more optimistic and hopeful story of mankind discovering this wondrous place, almost like one of Cameron's nature documentaries but in space, as opposed to the creepy message of "humans suck, don't you wish you were a blue cat person instead?"

No Cameron, I don't.

If it turns out that Our Guy was actually a Navi living in a human Avatar on earth, that’ll make my sides roll because that would imply that there are more Navi out there that are far more advance than the ones we’ve seen so far.

It would also feed into the conspiracy theory of the Navi not even being native to Pandora in the first place
