I know because of the fine documentarians here that EDS is a common munchie ailment of choice but I don't think MAID has been a commonly called for solution. The ones I am most familiar with just use it as an excuse for raging drug addictions. Too bad she isn't around to bask in wonderment at getting all this attention in such a unique venue. Might've ironically made life worth living for her.

Ah, you beat me to it. I looked her up last night after the video went viral on Twitter. Naturally, thanks to this thread, Ehlers-Danlos made my spidey sense tingle. Terrible reason to have yourself put down like a dog.

It occurs to me once they'd a whole short movie about it, she couldn't really back out at the last minute if she had second thoughts. Oof.

Just out of idle curiosity, why don’t some of these people just actually disable themselves. Paralysis or even just leg weakness is pretty easy with a needle full of everclear in some choice spots. KAFOS/Wheelchairs, and chance for an infection which for them is just a bonus.

No worries about being accused of faking, because you’ll actually be paralyzed or need a mobility aid.

It's a favorite because you can't tell from the outside. By your mid 30s you can have a lot of osteo-arthritis and extensive spinal disease. Hopefully her doctors based it on stuff they could see in xrays and mris.

However, for the ones who do legitimately fuck themselves up pretty good, the problem is often that once the novelty wears off it's still not enough, and they wind up chasing the dragon again. I'm thinking of Kelly Ronahan's escalation from eating disorder to bloodletting to multiple skin grafts to double amputee, some of the ones who got butchered by that sleazy "tethered cord" doctor, or Fit Vegan Ginger among others. Painkillers are a secondary motive IMO but malingering for opiates because you like opiates vs. munching for opiates because it feeds into the sense of legitimacy can't always be separated into distinct motives.

I do think it very much is a form of Munchausen's. I've seen it in person. There are people with apparent sources to their medical issues, but refuse to recognize the cause (usually one rooted in eating disorders, self harm, or addiction). They are beyond normal denial. They want all the attention and asspats of being sick, but don't want to admit that sickness is their fault, so they arbitrarily rename symptoms and claim illnesses they don't have. I can confirm my diabetic denier also just makes shit up for convenience (mental disorders, etc), and always has. They exaggerate immobility, makes scenes out of their breathlessness, etc. I have zero doubt Fraga has been munching long before the diabetes got bad enough to produce real symptoms.

It really isnt much different than someone like Paige (or the many others) who use false DX to hide anorexia, bulimia, etc. It's just easier to play alternative DX when skeletally thin. Noncompliant diabetics are a dime a dozen, but usually straight up admit they don't give a shit. When that noncompliant conjures up a million fake disorders to explain away their poor choices, it's really the same story as the other munchies.
