I've learned of the Battle of Itter Castle, where the Germans took the said castle, repurposed it as a prison, then used to contain high-profile French prisoners - one in which was a fucking tennis star player (Jean Borotra), alongside former prime ministers, former commanders-in-chief and whatnot. At the point in which the battle was about to occur (though there are plenty of events before then that's noteworthy but the wikipedia page covers it all), these prisoners not only gotten help from Americans, who had also been allied with Germans that defected plus some Austrians, but had helped fought off the 150~200 Nazi soldiers plus three flak guns that were coming to kill them, amounting to a grand total of 36 defenders and four tanks. And the defenders WON, with only one casualty, four wounded and one destroyed tank, versus an estimated 100 Nazis captured with an unknown amount of casualties and wounded. The casualty lost on the defenders' side was not one of the prisoners, but Major Josef Gangl, an defected German that had wanted to throw his lot with the resistance as to help them against the Nazis.
Oh, BTW, remember my mention of the tennis star player? He offered to vault the castle wall and run the gauntlet of SS strongpoints and ambushes to deliver both information they were unable to finish transmitting, because the phones were cut, as well as guide the reinforcements to the castle through the confusing hills and landscape. This was one of two recorded instances that Americans allied with Germans during WWII.
As for another example, why weren't we told MORE about the Spanish man that went by the codename Garbo by the Americans and Britains (Alaric by the Germans) that singlehandedly help end WWII by pretending to be a spy for the Germans but fed them information that ultimately brought their downfall while working for Britain (who initially turned him down when he offered his services BY THE WAY, to which he decided he was doing it ANYWAY and did well for himself until the Americans came along and asked Britain "Why the FUCK haven't you taken his offer?!", making them reconsider)? And STILL got rewarded the Iron Cross Second Class by the Germans - by Hitler HIMSELF - as their most informative spy they ever had??
This story is fucking amazing! Tell me more of these things, they're WAY more interesting than the dry shit we get in schools!!
I'm not necessarily a history nerd by any means (I barely scraped by in my (Texas) history classes), but fuck, man. This is cool shit.
