  • Early AVGN years are blown past really quickly in favor of stories of his first editing jobs (including one with a "Donald Trump-like boss" I'm not joking).
Now that I think about it: I wonder if the nasty boss at the Gamestop knockoff in the AVGN Movie is a dig against that specific boss he had?

A few years ago James made a video where he compared multiple Dracula film adaptions to the book to see which was the closest. I thought it was an interesting video and that it could make a fun new series. He could compare Frankenstein, A Christmas Carol, Alice in Wonderland, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and more. I know it would take time to read the books and watch all the movies but it could be a good series.

I kind of feel bad for James, but on a more frank note, while him releasing this book and the situation that lead to this is kind of his fault, he just feels like an autistic savant who doesn't know any better. Slobwave (hur hur hur origional amirte) may be his lifeline at the moment, and as I can tell, he did make the choice to drop Bootsy and Mike, but something tells me he was goaded to drop the two by another source. Slobwave is still under scrutiny by me as a culprit.

I think it would be best that James should just drop everything for posterity and face, but I don't think he's at the wheel- or even be allowed to do that by who is ordering him around. It also breaks my heart that he isn't much of a gamer and that collection that is presented with the AVGN isn't really his, but that's acting for you.

Exactly how is he a savant? Just in general old movie trivia?
He has general skills in editing and making movies, and he is a movie buff yes. Problem is that James isn't pushing himself harder. He's also got insecurities about his talents, which while isn't uncommon, isn't something you just let fester, especially if you're in the arts. His whole thing about him wanting to purposely make B movies is a crutch for him to think he can just underscore his work, while his want to be known and famous is one hell of a contradiction of personality.

My armchair psychology yes, but we all thought he was, up to a point, putting his all into AVGN. This was true, up to a point. If there's something I'd like to say about Screenwave, I can tell the disappointment isn't with the fact that he is working/managed by them, it's the fact that he isn't running a production studio of his own. We can bring up the whole deal of him being an autist, but usually even successful autists tend to know to navigate business enough to know who to give jobs they aren't good at while they do what they do best. As we all could guess, Mike was likely helping him along before he was "let go".

And no, I don't think AVGN the Movie was his best effort either, and I haven't even watched the thing. Where I'm getting with this is that James is properly, if sad or in humiliation, is finding what happens when he isn't trying. Even anime autists have that whole thing about spirit and undying determination. James though is thinking that someone else will just pick up the slack as he just passes by, or will not suffer consequences. That's not how life works.

I’ve always liked him. Nothing about his latest Doom video felt tired or burnt out to me. I think whatever happens he’ll maintain a core following and be able to continue creating. Like somebody else said, it’d be good to think all of his finances are sorted and he can just work on content for the enjoyment of it.

His views are way down and have been dropping steadily over the last 2 years. New AVGN's used to get 3-5 million views in a month and now they're struggling to get a million. Non-AVGN videos get pitiful views and used to get half a million or a million views depending on the topic. I'm not saying it's over but it's clear that the operation is winding down.

I have no idea why he didn't just go this direction. He should have kicked the fatties to the curb, made the channel the film trivia/comparison autism that plenty of people would have enjoyed (I know I did) among other similar stuff for series, and just release AVGN with Mike's help a few times a year so they're all good quality. This and maybe doing small indie films on the side now and then would have gotten him more success and happiness I imagine, but guess not. Now his legacy is fucked.

I think if he went this route it would have extended his career - more people would have kept following him and genuinely enjoyed his content. I think it just goes to show that James really makes some bad decisions and needs someone to wrangle him. Late and obvious, I know.

I miss his old Monster Madness videos. I think they reflected how much he knows and cares about cinema. It was interesting and had a certain kind of James tism charm that made it even more entertaining to watch. I'm not a movie person (most of his fans came to him through AVGN, so video games were the original draw) and I didn't care much at all about cimema's history and behind the scenes stuff, but I still really enjoyed watching them.

I think that (at least imo) shows that he can make some solid content about movies but the stuff he puts out now (and the God awful book) is just...terrible. How many people genuinely ENJOY this new type of content from him? He needs to realize that if your taste and content are spotty at best and absolute shit at worst, that you can't just make passion projects about yourself (and phoned in Nerd episodes) to have a successful career past this point. He's too stubborn, or clueless, to see that he can make good content about his passion, but it can't be centered on himself or some unscripted babbling on a podcast. If he made some MM-style videos, not necessarily centered on Halloween stuff, I think people could really enjoy that. It's a throwback to something fans loved and allows him to talk about the thing he cares about. I think he's just too far up his own ass now and thinks fans want to know everything about him as a ~filmmaker~. And he thinks his successful content translates to him making actual movies or whatever. He's better off presenting movies in a historical way and making silly shit with Mike. I don't think his ego will let him go back to that though.

Also, his wife seems like a real bitch.

AVGN is losing viewership because he can't get new fans to replace the ones he loses. His whole persona doesn't really work when you are a balding 40+ years old to anyone who isn't already a fan.

In terms of creating new series, I don't think he has it in him to make anything new that resonates with a new audience. Right now his channel is far from over, however he should just ride out how long he has left, and not do anything retarded with his money such as making another movie,

The biggest mistake Doug Walker ever made was buying that studio and hiring a cast, all that did was add to his costs rather than increase revenue. And now looking at his videos, he fails to crack 300k, with many under 100k. Doug will one day likely have to find a new job, while James if smart can just retire once AVGN is no longer profitable.

Weren't there rumblings that James actually *sold* the AVGN character and Cinemassacre Youtube page to Screenwave/Ryan? If that was the case, there probably wasn't any possibility of kicking them to the curb.

Even if that isn't true, there's a good chance that James and Mike felt that they needed Screenwave as AVGN basically came up during the age of Youtube where you needed a management company to even get paid ad revenue.

Scott the Woz basically supplanted AVGN for the new generation. Wii is the new retro, after all.

This is probably the most infuriating excerpt yet. James whining that he has to work and that he shouldn't have to because he has kids. Basically admits he doesn't want to work ever again because he wants to be a full-time helicopter parent.

It's such an odd statement to make. There's no gun to your head, dude. If you want to play with your kids in the snow then taking an hour or two to do so won't sabotage the entire thing. It's just more melodrama and James doing mental gymnastics to justify not giving a fuck anymore.

Yeah something tells me James and his wife probably dont have a happy marriage.
I dunno, James seems like someone who doesn't ask for much but to let him fuck around with his projects. His wife obviously knew he's very autistic going in. I'm sure it helps she's married to a millionaire who just needs to put out some phoned in video with some fat guys every month or two to pay the bills.
