Now that I think about it, why not spike Pearl's hair a bit like it is in the cartoon? There are plenty of eastern Indians (I assume that's what the artist is going for) who have straight hair to pull it off.

Most of fanart of Les Mis is like this. Everybody being gay or black and of course they're all modern day hipsters, because it's somehow too problematic to draw up 19th century characters.

(granted, there's stuff in the book and movies that suggest things like Enjolras being gay or Javert being Roma, but the way tumblr goes with it is just pushing it)

The only time I can see racebend Les Mis ever happening is in a modern-ish AU. Or if it took place in a completely different country than France. In the normal context it doesn't make any since other than Javert, like you mentioned.

In an odd way, I want to see this as well. Bonus points if the artist goes all stereotypical with Dan's ethnic clothing.

The only real WR racebend I've seen was someone's reboot of the series and he made Sgt. Blast black. But unlike a lot of Tumblr racebends, it worked since the design still looked like him and kept to the spirit. (He also made some of the Anthill Mob hench men non-white as well.) People would be more open to these redesigns if they tried harder to look like the characters.
