President Joe Biden on Tuesday said that the United States will impose sanctions “far beyond” the ones that the United States imposed in 2014 following the annexation of the Crimean peninsula.

“This is the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine,” Biden said in a White House speech, signaling a shift in his administration’s position. “We will continue to escalate sanctions if Russia escalates,” he added.

Russian elites and their family members will also soon face sanctions, Biden said, adding that “Russia will pay an even steeper price” if Moscow decides to push forward into Ukraine. Two Russian banks and Russian sovereign debt will also be sanctioned, he said.

Also in his speech, Biden said he would send more U.S. troops to the Baltic states as a defensive measure to strengthen NATO’s position in the area.

Russia shares a border with Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

A day earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops to go into the separatist Donetsk and Lugansk regions in eastern Ukraine after a lengthy speech in which he recognized the two regions’ independence.

Western powers decried the move and began to slap sanctions on certain Russian individuals, while Germany announced it would halt plans to go ahead with the Russia-to-Germany Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

At home, Biden is facing bipartisan pressure to take more extensive actions against Russia following Putin’s decision. However, a recent poll showed that a majority of Americans believe that sending troops to Ukraine is a “bad idea,” and a slim minority believes it’s a good one.

All 27 European Union countries unanimously agreed on an initial list of sanctions targeting Russian authorities, said French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, and EU foreign affairs head Josep Borell claimed the package “will hurt Russia … a lot.”

Earlier Tuesday, Borell asserted that Russian troops have already entered the Donbas region, which comprises Donetsk and Lugansk, which are under the control of pro-Russia groups since 2014.

And on Tuesday, the Russian Parliament approved a Putin-back plan to use military force outside of Russia’s borders as Putin further said that Russia confirmed it would recognize the expanded borders of Lugansk and Donetsk.

“We recognized the states,” the Russian president said. “That means we recognized all of their fundamental documents, including the constitution, where it is written that their [borders] are the territories at the time the two regions were part of Ukraine.”

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Putin said that Ukraine is “not interested in peaceful solutions” and that “every day, they are amassing troops in the Donbas.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday morning again downplayed the prospect of a Russian invasion and proclaimed: “There will be no war.”

“There will not be an all-out war against Ukraine, and there will not be a broad escalation from Russia. If there is, then we will put Ukraine on a war footing,” he said in a televised address.

The White House began to signal that they would shift their own position on whether it’s the start of an invasion.

“We think this is, yes, the beginning of an invasion, Russia’s latest invasion into Ukraine,” said Jon Finer, the White House deputy national security adviser in public remarks. “An invasion is an invasion and that is what is underway.”

For weeks, Western governments have been claiming Moscow would invade its neighbor after Russia gathered some 150,000 troops along the countries’ borders. They alleged that the Kremlin would attempt to come up with a pretext to attack, while some officials on Monday said Putin’s speech recognizing the two regions was just that.

But Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters Tuesday that Russia’s “latest invasion” of Ukraine is threatening stability in the region, but he asserted that Putin can “still avoid a full blown, tragic war of choice.”

I think we've talked about this rail line before. Ukrainians holding Vuhledar keeps Russian forces from having a open rail connection to Mariupol, Melitopol, and Crimea from Luhansk direction.

I don't think any books are gonna come till next year due to how fast the situation changes every few weeks/months, unless the fighting stops till winter's over but I doubt it due to the artillery and ukraine's attempt to push down south.
I asked briefly, and it sounds like the Ukrainians who would be working on anything are busy fighting or waiting for the conflict to end. But if the winter proves uneventful, at least some will have time/ability to work on personal accounts. However, the Ukrainian government is also reviewing & reserving the right to stop publications they deem to be a security risk for the war effort, or are supportive of the Russians, which is pretty much everything not written by official sources.

Additionally, the Russians have made a point of vanishing Ukrainian authors (even those who wrote children's books) from the very start of the invasion, so that many hid or deleted their works when shit kicked off.
William Spaniel (University of Pittsburgh) put a book out in June:
That one looks to be like reading a collated & edited repost of the Ukraine threads here (or reddit), minus the shitposting & vatnik/hohol stanning.

Edit: It's definitely geared towards those who only recently started following events in Ukraine. But again, there's nothing we haven't already heard or seen here, especially for those who've been watching Ukraine since the Euromaidan.

Pass.

In Kazan bunch of mobilized just said "Fuck it" and walked out the military base, because they weren't allowed to meet with relatives or given a leave, it's great to see.
Army only knows how to deal with powerless and intimidated young conscripts, this is what happens when you treat grown men that you just forced to leave their lives behind to die for the country the same

Ukrainians are allegedly welding crews into tanks & BMPs to prevent them from abandoning their vehicles & force them into assaults.

Pressing X for doubt.
Pressing ∆ for what the Russians absolutely would do/are doing.

Big Baddaboom

This kind of shit (from either side) is what makes my face leak a few tears.

Ukrainian is hit trying to save his wounded brother.

Was made aware earlier today that propaganda was pushing this shit, it's absurd. If this was done to you, would you ride all the way to the frontlines or try to run over whoever welded you in?
And why not just show it? Probably because it's not true.

What's funny is this absurd story is a tacit admission that the UAF have enough tanks and IFVs to deploy in force in these areas.

Last I checked nobody on the Ukrainian side has advocated setting up blocking units to shoot retreating soldiers.

Re: The Japs in WWII.

I know this is literal Allied propaganda, but I found it interesting that they specify that the Japs took control of the Chinese transportation corridors but they didn't really have the manpower to subjugate the countryside.

Australians kept and used personal firearms then, no?

I've never been there but I get the strong impression that they're a freedom-loving people who are fine having a king on the other side of the world but who would most definitely not be fine having Jap guards on every corner and bowing to a Jap emperor.

Back to the Ukraine war, what's up with the rumor that Putin fell and shit himself? Anyone have video?

Isn't the purpose of a BMP to be dismounted?
Like doesn't the prospect of welding a squad of guys into a BMP defeat the purpose for using a BMP in the first place?
I didn't even think of this, that's hilarious. Just not for the people involved in this hypothetical scenario.

I thought it much more likely they'd do it to their troops "recruited" from penal colonies, and tell them they'd get smoked by an ATGM team the minute the crew went off course, stopped fighting, or attempt to turn on the Russians.

ISIS did it when they turned captured BMPs into VBIEDs, but that was only with a driver.

india, sure, but australia? that place had less than 10 million inhabitants in the 1940s, less than 10% of the japanese population. japan could easily have succeeded at subjugating australia and incorporating it into their empire (if they had found a way to make the british give it up)
The Australians had guns back then, and if the guns didn't get the Japanese, the terrain would. And if the terrain didn't, the emus would, and if they didn't the cassowaries would have.

Perhaps if things got truly dire the emus would deign to be ridden into battle as cavalry mounts.

I heard about this one and it's absolutely true. He fell down the stairs and shidded and farded and coomed everywhere. Then a two-headed eagle flew in through the window and cried a single tear from each head.

In all seriousness, it's one of those rumours, on the level of the shit they were claiming about the donald half way through his presidency. Probably got its start as a stupid joke that some autist took seriously.

The clip from Yuri makes more sense now that we know there was a press crew there. I love how the guy with the Bren 2? has the same thing hanging off his ass I use for ground hunting. Keeps your ass out of the mud, but I get it caught on everything.
Now I lay down to sleep, I pray my soul the Lord will keep....
Quad copter deployed munitions have transformed Ranger Graves into just graves.

Upon further thought, my personal theory is that Russia has been welding problem children from mobik and/or convict formations into some of those old "upgraded" T-62s, with the promise that they would be cut free or forgiven if the crew succeeded/survived the engagement.

But Russia is trying to get ahead of the story by claiming burnt out tanks with welded hatches are Ukrainian & not their own.

They also keep asses warm, which is probably a bigger consideration right now than keeping them clean (except in the summer). And I've noticed that only a few Russians have them (or have made their own), when they've been a common thing with Ukrainians since the beginning.

Yuri also mentioned he's going to try and rock dual BMGs when his primary M2 is replaced.

That was my biggest wet dream downrange when I was on our convoy & QRF guntrucks, but the company supply NCOIC & armorer wasn't nearly that persuadable or friendly. Top & even CO would've totally let me do it if I could've sourced the parts & second M2 from somewhere. I know, because I asked. Multiple times.

Ah, the US Army in a nutshell. "You know, if you can get the parts in a way that doesn't have CID tossing me out of my bunk at 2AM, sure, why not."

That's the same reason I use mine. Not the mud itself, but to prevent the very specific kind of cold you get from sitting in mud at near freezing temps.

Would have been easy with solenoid fired M3Ps. They could have(maybe) been sourced from an Army aviation unit. 1200 ripums too.

It's kind of sad that the Russians couldn't field 1 ft² of foam to even a fraction of their troops; and the smart/lucky few who have foam ass-cushions were probably taken from Ukrainian sources, bought with their own rubles, or fabricated from whatever foam they could tear out of Ukrainian houses & vehicles.

For something so simple, cheap, and seemingly obvious to make such a difference in winter, it's got to be galling for Russian troops that they don't even rate for ass-cushions. Especially so if every other cursed hohol has their own ass-cushion.

During OIF I-III it was like the Wild West for scrounging & trading; so much shit was being left behind by redeploying units, and a lot of it was off the books.

The first score I made was trading a couple excess RFI black fleece jackets that we weren't allowed to wear anyways ("goretex or field jackets only!"); for an entire box of OKC-made USAF survival knives that evidently fell off the back of a C-130. Everyone in my platoon got one, and I still have mine.

After that I found another old deadlined M35 A2 down at the can-point, probably left there since '03, and I talked our XO & S4 warrant into letting me (i.e. the motorpool) sign for it, and XO agreed on the condition that he didn't want to see or hear about it again (meaning get rid of it before we redeployed & not hurt anyone with it)

So after fixing & using it as our personal vehicle because none of our 998s had A/C yet and nobody else ever wanted to drive it, I traded the truck off for a 30k generator from KBR to use at our hooches whenever the local grid went down. So when it did, our AC kept running, we could keep sleeping, or didn't have to stop playing Halo & Rome TW.

But our armorer was a complete bitchboy about the Ma Deuce I signed for, humped all year, & kept locked in the motor-sergeant's office (which had a vault for some reason); nor would he authorize or obtain anything except ball & tracer. No API, no HEAP, etc.

Even when I got my hands on a high-speed optic mount off the books from a friend in a line company & bought my own ACOG to use, he threw a fucking fit & threatened me with UCMJ & statement of charges, when he spotted the scope mounted during ammo draw immediately prior to a run to Tikrit; regardless that it didn't require any sort of benchwork or permanent modification.

That was also the same run where I watched two hajis hide behind an isolated mud-brick shithouse after shooting at one of our TCN trucks (during a traffic stau), probably 4-500m out. Our team's Mk19 & gunner were absolute shit, and the thick walls haji was hiding behind soaked up ball rounds from our two .50s (along with most rounds not hitting close enough to matter). If I'd had the ACOG that day (or even just API), we probably wouldn't have needed to fuck with them long enough for them to hit another truck, before they got hosed from above.
