Unpopular Opinions about Video Games

Pokemon Red/Blue is top 5 worst J-RPGs of all time. Some of the attacks in the game don't even work as intended, and that's not a glitch, the game was implemented that way. The devs just forgot to program most of the game mechanics.

I did play Pokemon Red for the first time a couple years ago, it was kind of a miserable experience, item and box management were a paint in the ass, and some attacks could potentially trigger an infinite battle, and yet people say only Gen 1 and maybe Gen 2 are the only good games in the entire franchise, when in reality they were just janky and unpolished JRPGs.

And things didn't get any better since Pokemon went 3D, in a day and age where JRPGs and Open World games are everywhere, it not acceptable that Pokemon games look, play and feel like and unfinished mobile game, specially when other yearly franchises like COD, FIFA or any Ubisoft IP at the very least look and feel like proper AAA titles.

It was a tattoo, not a pet, you fucking retard :P

I'm also starting to think we all have a different definition of "cheesy". Every one of them was cheesy because Kojima is a goofy mother fucker

But the further along the series went the dumber and dumber the characters and setting became in order for Kojima to do whatever he wanted to do while being chained to the franchise.
I think some people might be put off with the symbolism.

I agree though, Kojima had his worked DRASTICALLY fixed up in the earlier games. Whilst a giant water that has a nuke cannon is absurd, it at least tried to frame it in a way that works as a concept (a nuke that bypasses modern defense systems of its day). By the time 3-4 rolled around, Koji had ousted any help, in pursuit of his desire to be a hollywood bigshot.

You can clearly tell they tried hard to make the absurd shit more workable and realistic in the earlier games, but it just went off the rails. That 5th game, which I enjoyed as an open world game for a single playthrough, but I barely paid any attention to the fucking retarded story. Its like enjoying a B tier zombie movie. You know its not great, but its fun for a single playthrough.

MGS is a very divisive game series though, one of the more split game series to come about. I have never completed a single final fantasy game, they just bore the shit out of me in all aspects. Some people love them though.

Every time I see people saying Pokemon games are getting worse and worse, that's not true. Pokemon games were always terrible.

Poke fans should just be lined against a wall and be shot. Some of the most retarded people who have ever wandered this planet.
Pokemon encourages cockfighting and child endangerment. Nintendo should be ashamed of themselves for making such an immoral game franchise.

At least they bounced back with Nintendogs.

Everything Nomura makes is fucking trash and the Final Fantasy 7 Remake is arguably one of the worst false marketing stunts I've ever seen.
I bought that POS earlier and the year, and I've yet to complete it. It's like force feeding yourself a 50lb bag of raw potatoes.

I can't bring myself to even return to it and the sequel trailer looks like it's even worse. The amount of padding in that fucking thing is actually shocking.

The fact that he took a light-hearted novelty concept like "Final Fantasy meets Disney" and turned it into the most needlessly complex, incoherent, self-important nonsense in the history of entertainment AND largely ignored both Disney and Final Fantasy IP to focus on his donut steel animu characters is a testament to Nomura and Square's nearly supernatural capacity for incompetence.

If you asked the man to make some toast for breakfast, he'd come back three days later carrying a bag full of croutons soaked in piss.

I think the VR version was really the ideal version of that game. It works well as a VR game because it's a different sort of experience there.

This is why I liked Tales of Arise so much. I mean, think about it, how many games come out these days that give you the classic archetypal story of
mighty hero guy beats the bad guy, saves the hot girl, then they get married and live happily ever after
?

Deus Ex was a lot more predictive than MGS2, except maybe the whole "war economy" thing that was more of a thing in MGS4.
Tales of Symphonia was also good in a very straight forward and non-subversive way imo.

As a kingdom hearts apologist I agree.

These things have to be graded on a curve - if you've got a new franchise where the whole gimmick is the sheer volume of characters, stuff like that is going to slip through the cracks.

If you're developing yet another flagship installment in the most profitable IP in the history of the planet and are still cutting corners to the point that your studio has widely become synonymous with "half-assed", that's much less forgivable.
Agreed. It's like saying Super Mario Brothers is shit because all you do is run and jump.

That being said, I stand the original NES Zelda is one of the worst, and not because technical limitations, but because wandering around and bombing every square of every wall, or trying to burn every tree, and trying to find the *one* that will burn isn't good game design, it's padding.

The three worst Zelda games (not including the handheld, can't speak on them), SS, WW, and NES, all share the same problem: They exist to waste your time with padding. At least NES has the excuse that that was the style of the time, due to NES carts containing slightly less data than a high rez picture of dickbutt.

So your unpopular opinion is that turn-based combat is boring if it's boring?
I do agree that it depends on the type of turn-based game. For example, I make a point of playing most JRPGs (which are heavily turn-based) on the easiest difficulty. Those games are only about the grind and upping the difficulty only serves to test your patience because you're forced to grind exponentially more.

An example of a good turn-based game is Pokémon. Sure, it's a grindfest if you're a child who insists on only using their starter but the intuitive typing system and gym leaders who all have a single glaring weakness allows you to beat each gym without being forced to grind for hours.

Best turn based system imo is the Mario bros RPGs. The simple ability to time attacks and dodges makes the turn based structure actually interesting to play.

Yes. You wouldn't believe how many people will shit down your throat for saying that.

"UMMM YOU JUSY DON'T APPRECIATE THE STRATEGY SWEATY"
It seems tautological to me. Turn-based gameplay CAN be dull and unengaging, but so can real-time gameplay.

I find myself extremely engaged playing something like XCOM because, despite not being under any actual time pressure, the player's decisions are vitally important and combat scenarios are varied enough that there's no single winning strategy.

While I guess Xcom is turn based I was more referring to turn based combat in RPGs. In xcom you have to factor in stuff like cover and terrain so it's a bit more dynamic.

Those are the only turn based RPGs I can play without using cheats to speed them up. Otherwise with something like Pokemon it's a real drag. I played Divinity Original Sin 2 a few years ago and I remember it taking forever to get through a fight. I could have gone out, gotten a pizza, eaten it, shat it out, and my character's turn still wouldn't have started yet.

The best Pac-Man game is Pac-Man 256, the one that started out as a freemium mobile game by the developers of Crossy Road, a Frogger clone.

Most Pac-Man spinoffs suck total ass, too. Everyone knows and loves Pac-Man, but I've yet to meet a single person who can look at me in the eye and unironically say "Oh yeah, Professor Pac-Man's my shit"
