From my understanding, DeSantis focuses more on policy and his citizens without going all in on just being "not that guy." Moreover, he rarely talks about how HE is affected with how the federal government is running things. You can be brash without being an outright asshole like many of Trump's orbiters. Is that what you mean?

Sure, Trump's anger right now is justifiable, but he's also acting like an angry old man with no filter. It's not unlike what we saw from Rudy Giuliani in 2020 after The Steal. He just wasn't the Rudy of the 1990s. He was too old, too tired, and just not able to keep on top and fight the war. Trump of 2016 was already bit old, and in 2022, he's acting irascible and impulsive.

Meeting with America's #1 Catboy Appreciator is a big deal - it means he still has no ability to vet, nobody checking on things to make sure he isn't doing something colossally stupid that will have to result in pointless energy being spent on damage control. I don't think he'd really do any better in a 2nd term than he did in his first, maybe worse in some ways. (Not that he would win - AZ and the Rust Belt are well-fortified now.)

Call for these, for starters:

• voter ID in all 50 states
• Ban on ballot harvesting and mail-in ballots for those who don't have a good reason
• Closed primaries
• Allow voter rolls to be purged of deceased or moved-away voters
• A hard deadline on ballot counting (preferably the stroke of midnight once Election Day ends)
• More scrutiny for notoriously shady election officials (such as that one lady from Broward County)
• More transparency in vote counting and poll watching

These are good, and speak to the larger issue. Trump wants to talk about himself and how he got cheated in 2020. Like, dude, we know. We all know you got cheated. But he can't center the message on anything of practical value. If he did this, he could force the GOP to sack up on election security. Like trade, like border control, things like "requiring ID" and "not letting the dead stay on the rolls" are common-sense things that all sane people support, and people are usually shocked to find out are not actually things in America. So his political instincts seem pretty broken here.

Trump could start by picking better people to sponsor that don't just inflate his orange ego. Oz was a non-Pennsylvania native that scammed people. Walker has anger issues and mumbles when confronted. If those are the people to MAGA, we're screwed.

Trump has an immense amount of political sway and has fucking refused to use it to accomplish anything. If he started harping on any specific type of voting reform that topic could become a key issue in many key states. Instead he keeps his complaints vague and useless. He had the chance to stop mail-in voting for federal elections (state and local is another matter) while in office but instead chose to do nothing. Same thing he pretty much did with Covid although he obviously couldn't have stopped the individual states from exercising their "police powers", but he could have fired Fauci. He could not fast track the BS vaccines.

I’ll take all the trash cans, puzzle pieces, and top hats and say MAGA is over. Like the tea party before it, MAGA is ultimately a transition step to something better. We see hints of it from JD Vance and Ron DeSantis: nationalist populism sans personality cults and stupidity. When the rust belt and upper midwest voted for Trump in 2016, it was two things: immigration and trade. The fact that it was a shit talking Noo Yawker didn’t matter, just mentioning that we’re getting fucked on immigration and trade was enough to get millions of working class whites in those areas to consider voting for a guy with no political experience whatsoever.

I encourage Trump to keep running because getting the Gay Old Perverts to crash and burn is only going to be a good thing. There’s a certain facade of legitimacy that goes away when it’s effectively a one party state. An outer party that never pushes back can look like muh democracy but there will be a crisis of legitimacy and stability if the facade drops and now everyone gets to see that there’s no real choice that can be voted out of. The rickety and rotten system will struggle and all it takes is refusing to vote for cuckservatives.
