I will admit you're right in the second part though, I don't think Trump has to distance himself but should hammer some refined thinking I guess with not being guilt associated and the like which hasn't done him any favors for not focusing it. Though to the average voter all it takes is a slight "I don't endorse their views but am willing to hear others out" would do more favors then just "Kanye is a kike hating weasel and NF is a racist spic." By just showing a non-endorsement but not tossing them under the bus could gain voters too to a degree. How much I'm not sure.

The GOP wants the Republican party split, there is a lot of contention cause they did a lot to bungle the Midterms and the PR campaigns to have fingers pointed everywhere started hard on Nov 9th. There is a lot of disatisfaction in the party, and the Establishment has done a fantastic job of making it a chaotic muddy water instead of anger at the top(well the top in charge, there's plenty of anger at the top in popularity). Hell, letting the mask slip on DeSantis very well might be part of that, as there is no other popular front runner, and having everyone bicker over the better of two optimal candidates is better than a strong populist support continuing for a rug puller.

I think Trump will still be able to lock in the 2024 nom. The Uniparty would love to prevent him from getting it. DeSantis isn't about stealing the nom from Trump, it's about splitting the party so Trump doesn't have the massive support to overcome normal levels of fortification, as they clearly can continue getting away with that, but the emergency 150k midnight ballots they had to dump (an emergency oh shit button they didn't have prepared for Hilary when Trump surprised them by beating the steal in 2016) will probably be too costly to let slide again.
