He’d go into thinking he could be nice and fair to everyone and not be fucked with. There is actual evidence that Jake Rapp has endured serious depression as a result of his wife's open relationship. It is obvious that he is afraid to lose her because he believes he cannot replace her (as evidenced by the fact that he fucking says that), and makes do with a lifestyle he's uncomfortable with to not have to deal with that loss.
