Unpopular Opinions about Video Games

As someone who has wasted a truly fantastic amount of time on BOI, this is an interesting take. I wouldn't say it's a super common occurrence to end up with a build that one-shots most bosses, but it happens with some regularity, especially if you keep an eye on your curse/blessing rating and can grab a few angel/devil rooms.
I noticed TBOI took off in this direction after Afterbith. The game got a lot staler after that.

You can't one-shot bosses, but you will definitely have your DPS reduced against bosses as a high-dps build.

You may notice in later floors when you fight multiple bosses. Anyway, it's really unsatisfying to play dps oriented builds and rush through as high risk-high reward.
I'm sure there's some sperg out there who's managed to beat Pandemonium, Hush, and/or The Beast with a shitty build, but I do agree that their attack patterns are kinda bullshit. Mega Satan is a good example of that kind of boss done right.
I hate Delirium with a passion. The boss is such bs once it starts zooming around. It becomes less about dodging and more about hopefully he doesn't teleport on you 100 times and kill you. You can't even shoot at the thing.
I don't *entirely* disagree that there are a number of useless items (looking at you, Dead Sea Scrolls), but I wouldn't agree that there are so many that they clog up the item pool. Having to make do with what the game throws at you is kind of the point, right? You can always restart if your current build isn't going anywhere, and you can usually tell that by 2-3 levels in.
There's outright bad items like DSS, but I was referring to items like Mom's Underwear, Lipstick, but also stuff like Boomerang Tears and Pupila Duplex which are shitty trinkets.
Greed mode is a weird one. There are certain characters that are a lot of fun on it that are less so on the standard run, like Lilith, but I agree it can be a bit of a slog if you're a completist. Same for the challenges, the vast majority of which just aren't fun. Ultra Greed is definitely a frustrating boss, his second phase seems to deal damage way too randomly.

Cain and Abel can fuck right off.
Like, I get what they were going for. It just doesn't work.

After the Calipso Protocol was a failure, I kind of accepted that there is no way to get that classic horror game feel back, at least not the way it used to be.

Its both because the people making these "spiritual sucessor" games either dont know how to make these games or because they cant thanks to who is funding them.

Also because real life has become a living nightmare for most people so horror games might not even scare us anymore disturbingly enough. People are exposed to far worse shit than we did back in the 80-2000's so they are far more hardened. We are too jaded and cynical at this point.

Its kind like why the horror movie genre fell apart during the 40's since the horrors of war seemed far worse than anything it could cook up. But then it got a boost in the golden age that followed

He seems to get more and more unhinged as the PS5 continues to flop. The man’s entire emotional well being is directly tied into the PlayStation brand

What else you expect when people grew an attachment to brands that they would normally have for their parents, nation and God in a more sane time?

To get back on topic: I'm sick and tired of Metroidvanias by now. I liked the Igavanias (Bloodstained was disapointing, though) a lot but nowadays just reading that word as a descriptor makes me instaskip a game. Same goes for "Souls-like", "Souls-inspired" and "Survival", it feels like fucking Groundhog Day every time i check out lists of new releases.
I have been assured that Dead Cells is a good game that I would like, but this is the most offputtingly memey description blurb ever:

Explore a vast, ever-changing island filled with secrets, branching paths and challenging foes. Silky smooth controls, fast paced combat and undeniably enjoyable game-feel make each run more addictive than the next as you progressively unlock permanent upgrades. Multiple difficulty modifiers will help you find the challenge that’s right for you as you discover the characters and lore of the island.

RogueVania [physically painful to read -Ed.] - just one more run!

Dead Cells is an action adventure game where you explore an island and finish the game in one run without dying! Each run is different as the island changes each time you die.

But don’t worry, every time you die [your modern gamer needs repeated advance warning if they might not win on the first try, and the promise of a consolation prize for failing -Ed.] you’ll gain resources that unlock permanent upgrades [jfc, exact same phrase again -Ed.], making you stronger, giving you access to more weapons or items and even revealing new levels and paths to explore!

On top of that, the more you explore the more you’ll learn about the lore [we need a synonym for "lore" -Ed.] and story of the island and how it came to be contaminated by the plague that curses it.
Needs "crafting", now that I think about it.

For that matter, I've seen Blasphemous billed as a "Soulslike Metroidvania", probably why it's been rotting sight unseen on my hd for however long I've had it installed.

I tried it for a few hours. It's undeniably well made, but I found also found it extremely tedious. When you make every second of exploration crushingly difficult, it really hurts the flow of that style game.

It's been a quarter century. Everyone just needs to accept that nothing is ever, ever going to top Symphony of the Night.

blasphemous is really good but it's a lot more like a 2d souls game than an actual metroidvania. it's quite challenging too, especially on the ng+ runs where you can pick different debuffs.
dead cells is pretty trash imo, it has all the worst parts of roguelike games while also not being remotely like a metroidvania (unless you count being a 2d platformer as a metroidvania for some reason).

Kinda strange to think about how that game's been released on a number of systems, but the only platforms where you can still buy it are Xbox 360/One/Series and mobile. No Steam, no PS4/5. I don't think its ever even been on a Nintendo console.

I played Dead Cells for a whole five minutes before dropping it, it has some extremly annoying screen flashing which i just can't take anymore at my age. Why it hasn't become an industry standard yet to put in an option to disable screen flashing- and shaking is beyond me. I'm thankful that a lot of modern games have it compared to games from a decade ago though, screen flash/shake annoys me as much as motion blur does.

Heres a few I needed to get off my chest:

If your game is centered around pvp, don't be surprised when it flops because no one wants to deal with number obsessed assholes who brag about 3rd party cheating devices like modded controllers and play victim about "muh phone bill" when told to rightly fuck off when trying to play a game you already paid for. I am done with Destiny 2 and should have never played it in the first place. Any criticism no matter how little will be met with the most snarky unprovoked personal attacks and abuse of the reporting system, Failing that they will just bury your criticism with a ton of spam posts.

COD Ghost's Extinction mode needs a sequel with none of the "this is a GAME dont go on any killing sprees irl ya hear" woke glownigger bullshit that plagues most games made from the late 2010's-present. It had actual player customization unlike Treyarch's zombies mode and actually took itself seriously like black ops zombies did. None of the "willy wonka's faggotball P2W factory" machines littered all over every map to kill any immersion you have. Though the gamemode could have used less boss fights and more straight forward maps like Point of contact. At least they innovated and tried something different on each map.

As a rule of thumb: If it shills a discord, it is guaranteed to be pozzed or purposely half baked on release with developers hellbent on banning everyone in their little echo chamber all day than actually getting any work done on the product they are selling.

Duke nukem is a awful whedonesque character that constantly says awful lines and stolen one liners and the hasnt aged well compared to caleb and lo wang
I don't think there was ever an intention of him being a good character. He's a satirical amalgamation of action movie tropes and one-liners, all turned up to 11 and dropped into an absurd game world.

It seems odd to say he's aged poorly because he was ridiculous and comical from the start, even by '90s video games standards.

Thanks, that does more to interest me in the game than the official blurb, which is better than Dead Cells' but has kind of a douche indie artfag tone. It does go through the whole "deepest lore" spiel without actually using the term "lore", kudos.

I expect that SotN + Rondo + maybe Chronicles might be the next compilation release, now that they've done pretty much else, with Rebirth, Vampire Killer etc condemned to wander the void forever.

Thing was forever was supposed to be more darker and story oriented with the light rpg elements than 3d also it doesnt help that even the fanbase is divided about how duke is supposed to be as a character some want a half serious half comedical duke while others want a more older duke

It isn't still available for PSP, Vita, and PS3?

I think the problem is that music is a fundamentally different process that directly conflicts with the idea of playing a video game. You might, for example, practice parrying in Dark Souls so you can git gud and beat the game, but nobody loads up Dark Souls and parries enemies over and over again just so they can appreciate the perfect timing and enjoy the beauty of the parry animation for its own sake.

But enjoying that process for its own sake is what music is all about. Trying to turn it into a game that you "beat" or "100%" misses the essential spirit of the whole thing.

lmao fucking weebs
It seems you are confusing two different concepts into one idea. Rocksmith can help a great deal with playing guitar, or just a fun way to jam out once you are at its level. But thats all it will teach you how to do, play guitar. The skill of songwriting is MUCH harder than getting good at an instrument.

As to some of your techinical complaints, I would say you are correct in they exist, but its simply a limitation right now. I know it fails to profile vibrato very well, and its pretty shitty on a fast trill as well. But in time, it will get better at detecting exactly what the guitar is doing. Its no different from a tutor showing some lad how to play Smells Like Teen Spirit.

One thing you didn't bring up, but your hate campaign againt RS is that its not teaching people how to develope their musical ear. First song I learned from just listening was Between Insects and Angles by Papa Roach. It was an amazing experience. Not sure I would have the skill I do have now to just hear what note is meant to be playing if it was all laid out so easily for me. So yeah, hone in on that.

I've never understood the appeal of Sonic.

I was born in the 80's, so naturally I played the game (the first one anyway, I don't know or care about how many there are or whatever), but I always thought it was just okay. I used to play it at my cousin's house and it felt like a generic platformer, like 80% of the other shit that was out there at the time. I'll also be the first to admit that I don't particularly enjoy platformers, but I don't hate them either. The only thing that stood out about Sonic in particular was the whole "speed/going fast" thing, which was really just illusory anyway.

Fast forward to the Internet age and people are fucking obsessed with Sonic. I don't know if it's just the character itself or if it's the gameplay or the world or what, but I just don't get the obsession. I couldn't care less about Sonic if I tried, he's an obnoxious blue hedgehog from a platform game. Other than tapping his foot and waving his finger at you to demonstrate his "90's 'tude", does he even have a fucking personality?

To be as fair as possible, I may just be missing something because I never paid much attention to Sonic after that first game, but eh, I really can't be bothered either way.

I just don't fucking get it, man.

You don't understand it because you were born in the 80s. For us, Sonic was an alternative to Mario with more 'tude and the ability spinball. Since Sonic Adventure, though, Sonic's been an autistic fantasy world, full of strange melodrama and bizarre relationships. Something about it causes a fair number of children's brains to break every few years. You're in the set that was already too old to care when the series took this turn.

That game feels like a diamond in the rough, an extremely rare golden fish among a sea of mediocrity but thats mostly thanks to it being clear that the people doing it are a fans of the original movie and horror games in general.

Ironically the bad reputation that the Alien IP had at that moment thanks to Colonial Marines and the overall cynicism over having another great horror game just made people not want to give it a chance, thats really tragic.

The Sorrow duology comes close tho.

I didn't think it would amount to much due to it just being a single Xeno stalking sim. But the stealth in it was done pretty well and the aggression of the Xeno AI was pretty shocking compared to anything else I've played. As far as I'm concerned, it's good enough to be canon.

I also like the idea that there's no Queen on board yet there's a hive. So that would be egg morphing canon.
