Unpopular Opinions about Video Games

I didn't think it would amount to much due to it just being a single Xeno stalking sim. But the stealth in it was done pretty well and the aggression of the Xeno AI was pretty shocking compared to anything else I've played. As far as I'm concerned, it's good enough to be canon.

I also like the idea that there's no Queen on board yet there's a hive. So that would be egg morphing canon.

The producer (or director, cant recall) confirm there IS a queen, we just never saw her for some reason. I guess the issue comes from this game being based off the original while the queen and hive stuff is mostly an Aliens thing so you cant help but feel a disconnection there.

But I will admit that the egg morphing concept would be neat to see again after all these years.

Isolation did something I didnt think it could be done at this point...it made the xenomorph scary again. Considering the bad movies and games (and parodies) around the alien IP at this point and you would think it would be impossible to take it seriously but Isolation found a way to make you fear that high pitched roar and stomping down your direction.

I guess it helped that we cant kill it no matter what, even the flamethrower we get only serves as a temporary last resort. But still they gave us other enemies we can kill and fight so it had some healthy variety.

It definitely made them threatening again, probably more so than the first Alien since it moves so fast and sounds so heavy. I like Aliens a lot, but having them explode after a few rounds of a pulse rifle took a lot of air out of their level threat. It's which in some ways I like Alien 3 director's cut more.

To be fair, Aliens makes it clear that the xenos are only going down "that easily" because they are being hit with finest most dangerous weapons money could buy and the fact there are multiple ones have them adapt and go for a frontal approach instead of sneaking around and about (which they still did ocassionally).

Apparently its canon that an alien, far from a hive and queen, will change its tactics accordingly.

Its made very clear that a single one can cause a huge body count, especially if the people against it arent properly armed to the teeth.

If you try to shoot the Xeno with a mere revolver, it will just fucking walk that off and go on to kill your ass.

Yeah I get the reason why they're getting splattered easily. I guess it's just my bias liking the first film more, but that doesn't mean I don't love Aliens too for different reasons.

They really handled Xeno well in Isolation and made it way scarier than it ever was in the movies since it's so goddamn fast. The heavy ass thump walk is so unnerving. It doesn't look like it's heavy but then again, it's 8 feet tall.

AI is a love letter to the series. I'd love a sequel, but maybe it's better left with a one and done.

It's probably less unpopular on here than at large, but I'm not a fan of so many modding projects just going wholesale onto Discord. I understand that it's probably easier to organize and maintain than something like a dedicated website or forum, but having to go and make an account with my phone number and all that just to see if there's a compatability patch between Mod X and Mod Y is tiresome.

I have way more fun playing 2D over 3D. I get the mass appeal, and enjoy 3D, but it just lacks something that 2D had, and I’m not sure it’s just one thing. The 360 degree rotation threw me off when vidya switched between 2 to 3, but I got over it. It detracts from experiencing gameplay immersion, where it was easier to understand composition in 2D. Haven’t figured out exactly why I still prefer older graphics as I like new games too. Gaming evolves like everything (if it’s lucky), and I like that, though still really appreciate a lot of 2 & 2.5D.

I don't get why they just use Nexus. It's free, and there are dedicated sections on the mod's page for that kind of thing. Then again, did the troons pull through on their threats and stop using the site due to the mod compilations?

There's also Moddb which unlike Nexus is far less rulecucked and allows users post mods that transfer assets, armors, etc from other games.

Soulslike combat isn't actually that engaging

I probably said this before but if I get told "Oh dude you'll love elden ring the shield and spears are so great" when the whole fucking idea is to do the dumbass i frame abuse dodge rolling shit one more fucking time
I agree, Soulslikes have never clicked for me and I can't really explain what the problem is aside from I just get bored. Maybe if you locked me in a room with DS for a few days I'd fall in love (from what everyone has told me there's a time commitment before you start enjoying yourself) but I've never been able to spend more than 10 minutes with those games. They feel like work.

Soulslikes are just slow grindy combat. I really hate this trend of making every action game a Soulslike lately.

All the big sites are totally cucked. See the Spider-Man 2018 PC port gay flag removal mod controversy. In short, Nexus removed it for being "hateful" then other sites followed suit.

PC gaming in the 2000s, right before Steam, was just total garbage:
  • Slow adoption of DVD, and no adoption of Blu-ray meant that PC games would commonly come with like five CDs to install from
  • Controller support was a total mess, even with DirectInput, which didn't really have strong standards like mandating what exactly the A button equivalent should be, and where on a controller it should be placed, and how the game treats it. You'd always have to figure out controller mapping on your own
  • Piracy brought forth some of the worst DRM schemes ever, with stuff like StarForce being straight up rootkits. Denuvo sucks ass, but at least it's not rootkitting your machine
  • The days of games just commonly coming with trinkets to flesh out the experience (they called them "feelies" but that term sounds creepy) were over
  • Game packaging was now mostly empty cardboard boxes, where the disc often just came chucked in there loose, in a paper sleeve, alongside a DVD case-size instruction manual
  • Some games seriously had internet activation where you'd only be able to install the game like 3-5 times or so, and you'd have to call their help line to get your install count reset if need be
  • Bad ports were just way more common, especially with games that were primarily console
  • Games that are mainly PC that got console ports (like, simulation games) never, EVER had controller support
  • Very few Japanese games
  • New games could run terribly on midrange machines that were even just a year old
  • Even midrange machines cost a small fortune
  • On the Macintosh side of things, the secret world of quirky Mac software was all but dead with OS X, and the games were generally whatever leftovers PC had. Hope you like spending $50 on The Sims 1's base game, at a time when Windows had it bundled with like four expansions for $10.
  • Linux? lol
  • WoW was cancer
  • Flash games were the best thing on PCs of the era

I remember seeing a wave of idiots hating Steam for just any reason they could muster a while back, which got me thinking about just how bad PC gaming had become right before Steam got gud and fixed so much with the entire platform. I can't imagine anyone who was around at the time could sincerely consider PC gaming a better experience back then than now.

Gears of war has better writing and characters than Uncharted. Gears 5's campaign was pretty good, way better than 4. I think the marketing about Kait was really bad and didn't really do the game any favors. She's fine. The queen storyline I'm interested to see more of. I really cannot think of another way to continue Gears, I think this storyline makes some sense at least. Gears 5 has two hilarious moments that I think people should experience
You enter a village and a literal child follows you around calling you a fascist until his mom scolds him.

And the finale of the game is defending a giant wall from invading bug people

Any RPG that's using progression and/or combat mechanics based on D&D are dumb and are completely ignoring the capabilities of their technology in favour of abstractions that are no longer neccessary thus almost always making a worse game as a result.

I've been playing Jedi Fallen Order recently and the thing that I find fustrating is how weak you feel when you're fighting anything that isn't a basic bitch Stormtrooper. It just doesn't feel right to need to wail on an enemy multiple times with a weapon that can melt though a reinforced blast door like it was nothing.
PyEMKzW.gif

The game would've been better served if it leant in completely to the idea of you being an absolute glass cannon, you can one-shot almost anything if you get an opening, with the meat of the combat being you having to find or make one before you get killed by whatever it is you're fighting so that you actually feel like you're using a lightsaber and not a glorified wiffle bat, but that requires creativity and AAA developers don't know the meaning of the word.

Steam was fucking bullshit when it first came out, but at this point people are just being contrarian. I hated having to go to third party sites to get official patches or see even if there were any, I hated that Call of Duty 2 had a half dozen CDs to install and you had to sit there twiddling your thumbs waiting to swap them out because it was pre-Youtube. I hated that because I lived in a small town with no dedicated video game store, what I had to pick from was a small stand at Walmart. The reason I stuck with Playstation for as long as I did was because of how fucked in the head you had to be to be a dedicated PC gamer.
