The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have announced they will step back as "senior" royals and work to become financially independent.

In a statement, Prince Harry and Meghan also said they plan to split their time between the UK and North America.

The BBC understands no other royal - including the Queen or Prince William - was consulted before the statement and Buckingham Palace is "disappointed".

Senior royals are understood to be "hurt" by the announcement.

In their unexpected statement on Wednesday, also posted on their Instagram page, the couple said they made the decision "after many months of reflection and internal discussions".

"We intend to step back as 'senior' members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen."

They said they plan to balance their time between the UK and North America while "continuing to honour our duty to the Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages".

"This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity."

A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said discussions with the duke and duchess on their decision to step back were "at an early stage", adding: "We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through."

The couple's announcement on Wednesday comes two months after the Duke of York withdrew from public life after a BBC interview about his ties to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who killed himself in August.

I forget, is she an octoroon or a quadroon like Sargon?
She's a mulatto (half white, half black) her children are quadroons (a quarter black and 3 quarters white).
Also confirms Meghan repeatedly suicide-baiting to try and get her way.
Very classy of her. Is it confirmed Diana was a cutter and had an ED?
Both the spanish and the argentineans have ridiculous military power
I don't think Spain is known for its military power in modern times.

King Charles just played 4D Chess

It would be kind of funny to see King Charles flip out on Harry and Meghan the same way he flips out on staffers for pens not being able to work properly, but I’m sure he’ll keep it professional.
Oh yeah, this is great! He's inviting them so they can be booed and the rest of the family can politely ignore them and give them icy looks. It also takes the wind out of their sails when it comes to bitching about not being included.

It's the same sort of preemptive strike William (or his handlers) did with the photo op where he had Harry and Meghan with him and Kate looking at flowers at the Queen's funeral. The Firm is on point, yet again.

Also something just struck me: Charles is the first British monarch to be crowned who was born as heir in forever. Elizabeth and her father weren't supposed to be King and Queen when they were born, because nobody saw Edward abdicating. George V wasn't supposed to be King, though his father was. Even Victoria could have had cousin born and survive while she was young who would have preempted her.

So correct me if I'm wrong, but you have to go back to George III and IV to get to where a monarch is born an heir, has a child who is heir on birth, and succeeds them, as would happen when William is crowned. If Prince George is crowned without incident, that might be the most stable succession British has ever seen.

It also strikes me that as I'm older than William, I probably won't live to see if that happens. But Meghan isn't entirely wrong if she thinks Harry or Archie might be able to be King. That's more the norm than not in Britain.

Wouldn't the throne go to William and Kate's oldest son?
William and his children would have to pass before Harry became king, IIRC.

it's extemely unlikely to happen because the rules of succession were changed in 2013

will and kate have three children: two boys and one girl.

before 2013, the succesion went Charles -> William -> William's first legitimate son -> all other legitimate male offspring of William -> Harry -> Harry's legitimate sons; the line of Charles' males heirs would have had to be completely extinguished before William's daughter could inherit

this is no longer true; the crown can now pass to a daughter of the reigning monarch or the crown prince and through her line. since the crown prince has three children and all of them can inherit it is extremely unlikely that Harry's children inherit.

This isn't quite correct- if this was the case, Elizabeth never would have been queen, as George VI's younger brother, Henry, Duke of Gloucester was still alive when George passed. Pre-2013, Charlotte would have been able to inherit over Harry and his sons, but she'd have to outlive any legitimate younger brothers.

Side note, my parents are watching this documentary and as my desk is in the living room, I am also an unwilling viewer. I cannot get over now much of a narcissist this woman is, not to mention a bad actor. How my parents are able to sympathize with her and beleive her words utterly escapes me. I'm also really disgusted with Harry- he claims to love his mother more than anything, but throughout the entire documentary he repeatedly exploits her struggles. A loving son would not repeatedly dig up his mother's corpse and throw it at the cameras again and again to cry about how he and his wife are treated when he and that bitch haven't gone through even a fraction of what Diana did. A loving son would just let the poor woman finally rest. William understands that and acts accordingly. It's utterly baffling that Harry doesn't.

Nope, George III was the grandson of George II — the throne would have gone to his father Frederick, but he was hit by a cricket ball (allegedly) and promptly died before he could inherit it. The last time a situation like the one you’re describing happened was with Henry III and Edward I, I think.

That's the thing most people tend to ignore: the rules of succession can be changed at any time. No need for a "King Ralph" scenario - if enough parliamentarians decide that it's time for a stunning and brave black queen, they can just vote it into effect. They can say "From now on the youngest son gets the throne" if they want.

I was counting George III since like current Prince George, he was still born heir apparent - he's gonna be King whether William is or not.

Jeremy Clarkson 'horrified' at response to Meghan Markle column described as 'vile'

Posted 3h ago

Television presenter Jeremy Clarkson has said he is "horrified" at the response to a controversial newspaper column he wrote about Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex.

Key points:

  • Jeremy Clarkson says he is "horrified" to have caused hurt over a controversial newspaper column
  • He wrote that he "hated" Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, and that she should be paraded through the streets naked
  • Clarkson's own daughter joined a chorus of criticism of the television presenter over the column
It comes after more than 6,000 complaints were lodged to the UK's press regulator over Clarkson's Friday column in The Sun newspaper where he said he hated Meghan "on a cellular level" and compared his hatred of her to that of serial killer Rose West.

The former Top Gear host also wrote that he was unable to sleep as he was "dreaming of the day when she [Meghan] is made to parade naked through the streets of every town in Britain while the crowds chant 'shame!' and throw lumps of excrement at her".

The column drew widespread criticism in the UK and Clarkson's own daughter Emily took to Instagram to criticise her father.

Clarkson, 62, sent a tweet on Monday morning saying he had "put my foot in it".

"In a column I wrote about Meghan, I made a clumsy reference to a scene in Game of Thrones and this has gone down badly with a great many people," he wrote.

"I'm horrified to have caused so much hurt and I shall be more careful in future."

The column came out the day after the release of the final three episodes of the Netflix documentary series Harry & Meghan, where the Duke and Duchess of Sussex both spoke out against their treatment in Britain's tabloid media and about mental health battles they had suffered.

Meghan has also previously spoken of suicidal thoughts she had following the intense media scrutiny on her following her marriage to Prince Harry in 2018.

'Toxic, vile abuse'

Clarkson, who had his contract with the BBC terminated after punching a Top Gear crew member, said in the column he felt sympathy for Prince Harry but said Meghan was "a different story".

"I hate her," he wrote.

"Not like I hate Nicola Sturgeon or Rose West.

"I hate her on a cellular level."

Nicola Sturgeon is Scotland's First Minister, while Rose West – along with her husband Fred – killed and tortured nine young women in England in the 1970s and 80s.

Ms Sturgeon said what Clarkson wrote about Meghan was "deeply misogynistic and just downright awful and horrible".

"The overwhelming emotion I have for men like Jeremy Clarkson is pity," she told the BBC.

"I can't imagine what it must be like to be so consumed and distorted by hate of other people, and in his case it appears women in particular, that you end up writing that toxic, vile abuse.

"The kind of abuse he was hurling at Meghan Markle, that has consequences.

"Words have consequences, in that if they stir up hate against an individual then there are some people out there who would try to act on that."

Clarkson's daughter Emily, an author and podcast host, also hit out at her father's comments.

"My views are and have always been clear when it comes to misogyny, bullying and the treatment of women by the media," she wrote on her Instagram story.

"I want to make it very clear that I stand against everything that my dad wrote about Meghan Markle and I remain standing in support of those that are targeted with online hatred."

Politicians across the divide have also criticised Clarkson for the column, with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak replying "language matters" when asked about it during a trip to Latvia.

Christmas dinner in the Clarkson household could be a bit awkward this year.

As for Jezza referencing GoT, not everybody watched that, hence I understand but don't necessarily agree with the histrionics that ensued as a result of this article.

The original column was deleted by The Sun. Obviously nobody there has heard of archives.

Sorry; it's the best I can do. I think someone may have copied the text of the full article onto another forum I follow but I'm going to have to dig for it.

I wonder what Clarkson's account here is...

Clarkson has always written that sort of thing. But his statement is extra silly. Megan is trash but absolutely no reason to drag her thru the streets. The consequences of her and Harry's actions do quite enough to drag themselves unwittingly thru the mud.

Also I suppose not shocking that Clarkson's kids are nothing like him.

Also up to this point the Royals have kept inviting H&M before and their teams handle minimizing their showboating just fine. Charles team likely told him it was better to invite them and just crub any attention seeking at home rather than giving them more reason to whine about being excluded.
