From the most callous and purely advantage-seeking viewpoint, I.e. US neocons' viewpoint, it's not actually a risk for Zelenski to visit the front. If he were killed it would put an end to any of those observations people make that he was elected on a platform of seeking peaceful negotiations with the breakaway negotiations and with Russia; or those observations about the mansions bought and his huge personal wealth. And he doesn't have any practical role in the actual conducting of the war. If anything his being killed visiting the front would silence all those calling him an actor and puppet. And the gap would be quickly filled by a Pentagon appointee such as Zalushny who is 100% committed to militarily confronting Russia. It would also be a very big boost to his party come the elections next year (if they happen which I have doubts about).
They withdrew because holding it, in the face of repeated assaults and the destruction of bridges over the dnipr, was untenable. Withdrawal of an enemy force from a position you're attempting to take is a victory for the attacker, however you retards try to spin it.

Almost a year into a campaign that was meant to take two weeks, repeatedly beaten back in days from territories that took weeks or months to conquer, forced to retreat from Kherson immediately after declaring it "Russian territory", and stalemated at Bakhmut for several months. All this by a military that everyone assumed would fold like a wet paper bag at the first sign of resistance.
