Dick Masterson was the first person I heard articulate it well: 20 years ago if you were a guy who wanted to put his dick in a toaster everyone around you said 'don't be so fucking stupid' and that behaviour was bred out of you. Now, you get online and find a community of fellow toaster fuckers who not only don't mock you for it, but actively encourage you to do it more, which inevitably leads to doing even more fucked up shit as you chase the coom dragon.
The internet is the ultimate monkey's paw, I don't think there's a single good thing come of it that hasn't been horrifically misused. On the plus side, and maybe I'm just being optimist, I think people are starting to get bored with it --especially social media-- and returning to irl activities.
