I went through the same thing. Assumed she must've said something monstrous, had read a few very out of context quotes. Actually read what she had to say. Not terribly radical in either direction, but she clearly was writing and speaking from a place of genuine concern, and I can't say I object to anything she had to say. And now I'm on Kiwi Farms and I think Rowling if anything is too charitable. In a way it's a validation of the TRA "no platform" bullshit. They're right. Exposure to the TERFs is in fact capable of peaking anyone with a reasonably open mind and functioning eyes.

Dick Masterson was the first person I heard articulate it well: 20 years ago if you were a guy who wanted to put his dick in a toaster everyone around you said 'don't be so fucking stupid' and that behaviour was bred out of you. Now, you get online and find a community of fellow toaster fuckers who not only don't mock you for it, but actively encourage you to do it more, which inevitably leads to doing even more fucked up shit as you chase the coom dragon.

The internet is the ultimate monkey's paw, I don't think there's a single good thing come of it that hasn't been horrifically misused. On the plus side, and maybe I'm just being optimist, I think people are starting to get bored with it --especially social media-- and returning to irl activities.

Less boredom, more investment reluctance. People put huge amounts of their lives into these social platforms, that inevitably die - as all businesses and spaces did. In the early days of the internet this was moderated by having lots of smaller communities you engaged with, so you were less "all or nothing" and instead slowly migrating across a dozen or so spaces that popped up and closed down.

The modern era of the monolithic interlinked social media brought an end to that. Its exceedingly hard to just stop using one sliver, they all interlink, deliberately. What this leads to is people eventually falling out of love with one, or forcibly leaving one by policy or politics, and losing everything they invested in it.

And then they don't invest in another one.

Gaming sees the same problem right now with MMO's and Live Service games - People who invest into one are not keen on leaving it, and starting fresh elsewhere. For every hardcore MMO guy or Gacha Whale who chases everything, there's a dozen Warcraft guys who just played that cuz thats where all their memories and gear were, and when they quit they just didn't want to restart all that in another game. Call of Duty sees the same thing with their tail of live service titles - The casual people who end up liking one in particular and spent some money on it, deciding not to leave it when the next comes out.

Social media isn't immune to this effect, When asked to restart or invest in the next thing or craze or platform, a lot of them are now just saying "Nah". They're worried if they commit again, all that effort will be wasted again.

I can't remember the last time Jim saw consistent losses 3 weeks in a row. It's especially staggering given he just dropped his Top Games 2022 video; that and Top Shittiest are usually the only thing that still perform relatively well on his dying channel.

It's still too late for an 800k meltdown in 2022 without a true Christmas miracle, but if this rate holds a bit longer we can move the Doomsday Clock up to February.

Insecure Shitbags are easy to dismiss. Having beaten Dark Souls is a badge of honour for them. Anything that might invalidate or diminish that hurts their ego. They can be safely ignored.

The other two camps have a point. I don't remember if Jim did this, but I remember a game journo played an hour or two of a game and wrote a review based on that. People were right to be pissed.

Maybe that can be justified if a game is so bad no amount of "it gets good 15 hours in" can save it, but that wasn't the problem.
