Liquid/soft diets get super old fast. Most liquids are not very filling so you're always hungry. I can absolutely see wanting something substantial like Mac and cheese. Less for the flavor, because I agree gross, but rather to have something hearty in your stomach. But a milkshake would be just as hearty and taste better, so I don't know what he's complaining about.
