Alright, so basically, there is a renewed push to declassify 28 pages of the 838-page congressional report on the worst terror attack on American soil. It is widely speculated that these pages point the blame towards Saudi Arabia. The links provided go into more detail, but it's worth noting that, of the 19 men behind the attacks, 15 were citizens of Saudi Arabia. Not to mention Osama Bin Laden himself. Saudi Arabia has pushed back, threatening to sell off hundreds of billions of dollars’ worth of American assets if Congress passes a bill that would allow the Saudi government to be held responsible for any role in the attacks.

They are so fucking guilty. Even if they don't hold a direct role, Saudi Arabia has been exporting Islamic extremism in the form of Wahhabism for decades.

Can't you guys use your own oil or import from better places like brazil, Norway,uk, Venezuela,Russia?
I'm not an expert in this field, but I'd imagine it's a complex mixture of geopolitical factors and the economics of oil infrastructure. But several of those counties fall into the top 15 import partners for US petrochemicals. But Canada is overwhelmingly the largest.

The price is pretty consistent globally is the issue. It doens't matter where we're getting it from if it causes gas to be $5 a gallon, which will cripple the economy.

As the world weans itself off of oil Saudi Arabia will soon find itself in an Iran or possibly even North Korea tier situation. Nobody really likes them and they cause instability everywhere. I can't fucking wait.

They'll just appeal to realpolitik. Which is pretty fair, since that's the only reason why this was done in the first place. We kinda hate them, we just like their oil.

I can't second this hard enough. The only reason why Saudi Arabia is tolerated is because of its oil. It offers absolutely nothing else of value; just the opposite, it actually causes a lot of harm with its relentless exportation of Islamic radicalism. In other words, Saudi Arabia's main (if only) exports are oil and terrorism; once the oil dries up, everyone is going to suddenly not turn such a blind eye to the terrorism.

If this bill really goes through and/or the pages get declassified, and there turns out to be a connection between the Saudi government and the 9/11 attacks, the shitstorm will be huge. Even though it happened almost 15 years ago, 9/11 is still a very sore spot for many Americans. If Saudi Arabia really is guilty, I doubt even oil will soothe the wrath millions of Americans feel over the massacre of thousands of their countrymen.

Maybe we'll get really lucky and this will hasten the decline of oil too. While fossil fuels have their place, I think that first world countries should be getting off of them pretty quickly. It's not even an environmental thing: nuclear power plants are objectively superior to fossil fuel plants in every way, and advances in electric car technologies will remove the need for fossil fuel cars. The only real uses for fossil fuel in first world countries that won't be going away in the nearish future that I can think of are rocket fuel and emergency generators.

It's going to take a lot longer than you and a lot of people think it is. Nuke plants are not built quickly or cheaply, while I am a huge proponent of said source of steam, it has its drawbacks. Only a small percentage of cars currently on the road are electric. Furthermore, electricity has to be produced in order to drive them. Most electricity produced in the US comes from burning coal. Solar and wind have a very long way to go before they can produce large amounts of juice. A lot of folks think the renewables are capable of replacing traditional forms of generation quickly; far from the truth.

Long story short; we'll be dependent on oil for some time to come.

In part though the reason for us remaining dependent on oil is because there isn't a very high cost of it right now. We probably would be able to fairly rapidly switch if there were an economic reason for us to shift as most of the problems are just scale problems

Motherfuckers didn't help out their fellow Muslims emigrating from Syria either. They didn't take any at all. Just thought I'd remind you all of that fact during our Two Minutes' Hate.

They have no interest in helping anyone. Least of all the poor, poor, oppressed Palestinians. They want the Palestinians there to take as much shit as possible so that Israel can take the blame for it and they can use it in their terrorist fundraising.

We're veering off-topic, but Saudi Arabia sucks so I don't care. So let's turn this into a "fuck Saudi Arabia" thread.

Anyway, I just read an interesting post on Reddit that highlights Saudi Arabia's imminent political collapse. Copypasta'd:

They have:
  • an already high unemployment rate of 12%
  • a rapidly growing population with millions of more jobs needed just to maintain current employment rates
  • an economy where 80% of Saudi nationals work for the public sector or the state oil company.
  • a government that was 90% funded by oil revenues
  • an oil price that has collapsed by two thirds and isn't likely to increase substantially any time soon
  • a population that has become accustomed to a very high standard of living, and will not accept the work ethic or lower living standards required in future
  • a dysfunctional government system that is unwilling to undertake major reform to change this system
  • a current monarch that is currently 80 with dementia, with no well defined system of succession and dozens of potential monarchs who will not want to lose out if the succession goes down another line
  • a monarchy that only maintains its support because the people are doing economically well due to widespread knowledge of the corruption and venality of the royals
  • an official system of legitimacy where the monarchy are supported in power because the clerics endorse them as being properly Islamic - an endorsement that can be removed at any moment if the clerics feel they are being harmed by the monarchy's unpopularity
  • a culture of extreme hardline Islam, with much of the population wanting to return to an even more aggressive version of the faith, and something that could gain a lot more traction with young, angry, unemployed men.
  • a complete absence of any moderate opposition, with the most likely alternative power bases being either Al-Qaeda or ISIS
And to elaborate on the 12% unemployment rate, it's probably much higher than that. First of all, the unemployment rate for women is probably like fucking 80% if not higher. Very few women work because they're not allowed to interact with men they're not related to. Also, remember "80% of Saudi nationals work for the public sector or the state oil company." It's a well-known fact that in Saudi Arabia, "working for the government" basically translates to "being on the dole." These jobs are usually the definition of "cushy." As for the real work, the majority of it is done by foreigners; the technical jobs are done by Americans and Europeans while the unskilled, manual jobs are done by poor migrants from Asia. From Wikipedia:

As of 2008, roughly two thirds of workers employed in Saudi Arabia were foreigners, and in the private sector approximately 90%. In January 2014, the Saudi government claimed it had lowered the 90% rate, doubling the number of Saudi citizens working in the private sector employment to 1.5 million. (This compares to 10 million foreign expatriates working in the kingdom.)

According to Reuters, economists "estimate only 30-40 percent of working-age Saudis hold jobs or actively seek work," although the official employment rate is only around 12 percent. Most Saudis with jobs are employed by the government, but the International Monetary Fund has warned the government cannot support such a large wage bill in the long term. The government has announced a succession of plans since 2000 to deal with the imbalance by "Saudizing" the economy, However, the foreign workforce and unemployment among Saudis has continued to grow.

One obstacle is social resistance to certain types of employment. Jobs in service and sales are considered totally unacceptable for citizens of Saudi Arabia—both potential employees and customers.

Oh, and they abuse the everloving shit out of these migrant workers, but the sad thing is these people are so poor and desperate they're willing to be abused if it means they can send money back to their families in their home countries. And as mentioned in the Wikipedia excerpt, most Saudis have absolutely no work ethic. It's a stark contrast to what we see in America, which absolutely idolizes work ethic and the self-made man; in Saudi Arabia, they absolutely refuse to do any sort of service job because they believe it's beneath them (just to give you an idea of how major the service industry is, 112.8 million Americans work in this sector; the sector itself accounts for 77.2% of all jobs in America). In other words, Saudis aren't willing to do the jobs that keep societies going.

tl;dr- Saudi Arabia is totally fucked. They've pissed away their oil money without actually investing in a sustainable infrastructure and a large percentage of their population are religious fanatics with no work ethic.

They also have a major problem where due to global warming their land is reaching the point of being above body temperature meaning that it is lethal temperature now without AC
