For posterity, fire was not rejected from the shelter for being transgender. Fire was rejected from the shelter because they didn't meet the criteria (being afraid for their life, and needing a place where their abuser cannot find them because there is reason to believe that the abuser would literally track them down and murder them if they went back to their parents house or to a regular shelter, etc.)

These shelters serve a very specific population, and Fire was not anywhere near that point yet, so they got referred to a regular homeless shelter.

It was also a shelter specifically for women and children.

Fire is being incredibly revisionist.

His sole concern was having somewhere to sleep for free. He has a car, FFS. Sleeping in your car might not be ideal, but it's better than sleeping under bridges. How many people do you need to read your stuff and validate you? In the real world, a handful of close friends is plenty of support for most people, with appropriate community services and professionals added when things are really tough. They don't need - and don't want - hundreds or thousands of people "hearing their story" and giving them advice.

Fire wants an audience, the bigger the better. There are plenty of safe spaces both online and in real life but none of them are going to give him a "me,me, me" platform or the sheer volume of attention he wants.

It also irks me that he feels entitled to social housing. If he got off his ass and got his Illinois teacher's licence, maybe he wouldn't be so chronically poor. Fire being Fire, he's perfectly happy to take resources away from people who are genuinely unable to solve their housing problems.
