I've said this before, but thank Rubiss for the slot machines. Great way to make tokens in the casino. The first one, at least. I think I read somewhere that the roulettes are better in the other one. Went from 500 to 20k tokens on the 1-token machines, and then 20k to 175k on the 10-token machines. Then, just a few minutes ago, I went from 25k (spent most of what I had) to 260k, also on the 10-token machines.

See that's something I never liked about JRPGs. I can't stand it when they make a character that sucks unless you make him JUST RIGHT.

And for the record I did put a boomerang on him.
DQ 6 DS and a couple of the Monsters games are the only ones I've finished, and 6 did the same thing to me. The girl that's supposed to be the second main character who's forced in your party spent the whole game in the wagon so I could use the MC, Milly, Terry, Wrex, and the Slime Knight. Then I get to the end and she fades away in what was supposed to be an emotional scene and I didn't actually care since I never used her. Also Wrex the Axeoraptor is entirely broken in DQ 6 and you should absolutely do the short sidequest to get her for the end of the game.

Really enjoying the start of Act 2, so far.
I'm also really fucking glad that I gave Sylvando good equipment, even though I didn't have him in my party.

VI was the first experiment in stackable jobs, and boy howdy does it show. I'm glad all the characters got a shit load of party chat to flesh them out, that goes a long way to making the game feel more in line with the others. hell, the Japanese joke that one of the remake's selling points is going on a world tour with Lizzie just to get her view on things.

Fingers crossed III HD modernizes the battle system to make it in line with VIII+, setting a precedent for polishing the older titles when they inevitably get their own remakes. By this I mean Resilience being the defense stat instead of 1/4th of Agility, magic damage scaling with Wisdom, Agility contributing to evasion, etc. Maybe add in Anathematize, Blunt, Channel Anger, and Magic Barrier to round out all the buff/debuff options. One of the best part about battles in XI is that you had plenty of options to cripple enemies with.

Found this masterpiece on Newgrounds.

I hadn't actually seen III HD until now and I like it. Always thought that the 2D sprites in 3D environments looked best for Dragon Quest, but that's probably nostalgia talking since the PSX 7 was my first mainline game and I played all of the DS games at some point. Speaking of, they really need to get the rest of the series on Switch. It has 1-3 but the rest are missing until 10 despite 4-6 and 8 having mobile ports that would be pretty easy to port aside from their portrait aspect ratio.

How are we doing, Dragon Quest friends?

That DQ: Treasures game looks kinda neat. Waiting to see how it is turned into a money sink.

Treasures looks fun and I am a complete sucker for Monsters games since DQM on Gameboy Color was my first DQ game.

Also if you haven't played it, play Yakuza: Like a Dragon 7. Bunch of Dragon Quest references and influences like the all or nothing crit attack and Call for Family on enemies. If you like DQ you'll probably like Like a Dragon and Like a Dragon is a great entry point into the series. They even announced Like a Dragon 8 while we were down, which is another JRPG in the series.

So, something I've read about before is how Dragon Quest IV had impressive AI for the NES: https://dragon-quest.org/wiki/Dragon_Quest_IV:_Chapters_of_the_Chosen#Artificial_intelligence

Artificial intelligenceedit

In a bold move for an NES title, a significant portion of the game's memory was dedicated to an intricate artificial intelligence that controls party members during the fifth chapter. In the fifth chapter of the NES version of the game, the player no longer directly controls any of the previous characters; instead using the Tactics menu to deliver a loose set of instructions (Normal, Defensive, Offensive, Save MP, Use No MP, Try Out). The only character directly controlled is the Hero. All chapters except Chapter 2 also contain NPC, which travel with the player, but cannot be directly controlled. They act on their own, guided by the game's AI.

Are there any technical writeups or videos as to how this works? The NES couldn't even do floating point arithmetic, and I don't know of any other games with sophisticated AI routines other than Monopoly:

Did any of you end up getting Dragon Quest Treasures? How is it?
It's a fun pseudo-open world title that has a surprising amount of deep cuts and it's own interesting lore you have to piece together, with my main gripe being that your three monsters are utterly bloodthirsty and will pick fights with anything that moves. TOSE doesn't get to do 3D action very often and I'm glad the studio was given the chance to work on this side project even with DQM's strict deadline; fingers crossed there's a Treasures 2 that gets the same massive leap in quality as Builders 2 did compared to the original.
