This is a thread where we share things that scare, disturb, or creep us out. They can be stories, videos, or photos. It goes without saying that if you're easily scared, this probably isn't the thread for you.

I was inspired to make this thread after coming across... this.

This is real, by the way. What you're seeing is a deep sea cephalopod called the bigfin squid. And while we're on the topic of the deep sea, can I just say how much this graphic freaks me out?

The ocean is so incredibly deep and we barely know anything about it. What really creeps me out is when I stop to consider what kind of organisms live below the mesopelagic layer. From Wikipedia:

It has been suggested that more is known about the Moon than the deepest parts of the ocean.[2] Little was known about the extent of life on the deep ocean floor until the discovery of thriving colonies of shrimps and other organisms around hydrothermal vents in the late 1970s. Before the discovery of the undersea vents, it had been accepted that almost all life on earth obtained its energy (one way or another) from the sun. The new discoveries revealed groups of creatures that obtained nutrients and energy directly from thermal sources and chemical reactions associated with changes to mineral deposits. These organisms thrive in completely lightless and anaerobic environments in highly saline water that may reach 300 °F (150 °C), drawing their sustenance from hydrogen sulfide, which is highly toxic to almost all terrestrial life.

So not only are there organisms like the bigfin squid, there are organisms that draw their sustenance from hydrogen sulfide instead of the Sun. They are creatures of darkness that feast on poisonous gas.

Sweet dreams.

UGH, FUCK YOU.

Real talk though, this picture is from the front cover of a book called Communion by Whitley Strieber. The book is basically a collection of the accounts Strieber and his wife gave under hypnosis and the memories that surfaced after said hypnosis; the accounts revolve around encounters with strange beings (most readers assume them to be aliens, but Strieber himself doesn't jump to conclusions).

I've read a little of the book and it's seriously bizarre and creepy.

My parents had the book when I was really young and I just could not look at that cover.
Same. I couldn't walk into a bookstore for years in my childhood because of this being on the shelves. My mother had a copy and my sisters thought it was abso-fucking-lutely hilarious to put it random places in the house and make me run in abject terror until it got put away again.

It's actually really, really comforting to know that it wasn't just me having this reaction.

Not gonna lie, that's fascinating.

I remember seeing something on the news when they first discovered this squid. They straight up look like aliens.
Speaking of aliens:

It looks like a fucking horror movie, not a scientific recording of a deep sea squid. Especially with the way the camera jerks back and forth before finally getting that thing in frame. But what creeps me out the most is when the camera pans out and down, and the squid's tentacles will just not end. It's also creepy because the tentacles remind me of spindly spiders' legs :cryblood:

I mean, it is fascinating (which is why I immediately researched the bigfin squid), but I just think that footage is creepier than any horror movie that's come out recently.

Here, have another worm.

This motherfucker is one of the reasons why I won't play Silent Hill 3. A lot of people laugh it off by saying it looks like a penis, but I honestly don't see it. Plus the music, holy shit.

Cryptids &/or aliens spook me terribly but I find them fascinating too. Flatwoods monster kinda lost its spook factor for me after drawing it one day.
I like to do draws based on the descriptions alone without taking into account the well-known artist depictions of these things just to see how my version matches up. So I did the Flatwoods one and imagine how disappointed I was when I finished and just saw I had drawn an owl. *sigh*

@Cosmos , I'm with you on deep sea critters. Some of those things are nightmare fuel. Imagine encountering one of those things in the vast black emptiness. Dirty. Crapped. HOV.
