YouTube Historians/HistoryTube/PopHistory

kind of surprised no one brought up Jackson Crawford. PhD in Scandinavian studies but more formally a historical linguist. He talks about Old Norse and Norse history/mythology. He despises talking about politcs, Marvel, and is pretty based when it comes to guns. He also really hates modern academia lmfao. small PL: but I had the chance to meet him on a few different occasions. Pretty cool and chill guy and is the "real deal". doesn't make himself to be some persona on the internet. I'd recommend if you're wanting to get into any sort of Norse mythology and want a "real" non mystical/political bias about the history with a cool cowboy.

Leather Apron Club did a pretty good video on why the Ancient Greeks weren't gay like how modern academics put it.

watched this video and holy shit is it based. One interpretation I haven't seen floated is that Socrates as portrayed by Plato loves to argue impossible cases, see Plato's Apology for the perfect example of this; Socrates is portrayed iirc of wanting to prove himself such a master (debator tee hee) rhetorician that he wants to convince the jury he's guilty even though hes very obviously innocent.
Also read Xenophon's the Anabasis its pretty fucking great.

Leather Apron Club is an interesting Youtuber, he has been rising relatively fast and has made some videos unrelated to history talking about a future hypothethical American dictatorship and how such a large percentage on the most popular podcasts are Jewish.
He hasn't said anything outright rule breaking for Youtube to go after him but it wouldn't surprise me if he gets censored eventually in some way. I suggest anyone who enjoys his work should perhaps archive it.

New Rudy video. Decently interesting but feels a little oversimplified (but that's really every whatifalthist video at this point). Nice audio mixing at 42:20 - 42:37 .

The comments to the video are... slightly concerning if I'm being honest. I have a soft-spot for Rudy but these people are acting like he's some revolutionary insightful scholar. Maybe it's just a sign of the poor state of education in the world but man:

Yeah it's definitely education low and high being in the toilet. His videos are certainly interesting/thought provoking but he has gotten stuff wrong before. He's not exactly some revolutionary thinker.

Also that's two videos now with audio problems. First the smoke alarm/ups. Now whatever the fuck happened here

Also also "with the introduction of the plow, which only men had the strength to push.....meanwhile in the older societies, and in Africa, agriculture was done with hoes"

So i was reading about the reconquista and this fucking article appeared:
and holy shit is it a trash, the thesis from what I can tell is that because the right wing uses the Reconquista, its not a thing its really fucking bad, also it casually endorses the invasion and subjugation of peoples so long as an approved group does it. The Reconquista was by these retards own definitions an anticolonialist struggle.

Yeah, this section is amusing.

As I mentioned before, this sharp difference of vocabulary must be explained as the result of a careful selection at the service of an ideological agenda: while “invasion” clearly points to the lack of legitimacy of the Islamic conquest, Reconquista bears exactly the opposite meaning. It is not just a simple conquest, but a re-conquest, that is to say, the recovery of something previously lost. And you can only lose what you have previously owned. This envisioning, therefore, leads rather inevitably to the downgrading of Andalusi Muslims as mere interlopers, regardless of the local origins of the vast majority of them and also regardless of how long they remained living in their territory.

If "ownership" of an area by a people is problematic and living in a place long enough means that colonialism is no longer an issue, that raises some interesting questions regarding the Europeans who have been living in the Americas in some form for 500 years. Which I'd be fine with, history is always complicated, but as you mentioned I don't see that argument going over well.

Like I'd be fine if the author made clear that you win some you lose and thems the breaks of history, and then went into the primary sources to show that, the Christian Iberians didn't really view it as retaking so much as taking yes therefore the Reconquista is not only an anachronistic term, but the concept itself was anachronistic, and then go to say it also has unfortunate political connotations today, and actively interferes with understanding then maybe I'd grant the term is bad. However it is still a useful phrase because Christian Iberians owned the peninsula, lost it and then retook it, and Reconquest is as good as any term for that process. But the Author didn't they just said its always been used for racism against the heckin Muslims ergo its bad.

I'm late and gay on this, but finally got around to watching:

That whites have been battling the perfidious jew across all human history is the most believable religion I've ever come across.

All these pop history and science videos are like this. The comments are all people saying they wish school taught this way, and that schools never teach any of the things in the videos. When in reality, either schools do (in theory) teach exactly that and they weren't paying attention, or it's interesting but ultimately useless trivia that would be an even bigger waste of time than school already is.

Or c they barely teach history/science and use it as a framework for white guilt rituals and genital mutilation 101

The biggest issue is that these people never actually wanted to learn or to think, they wanted someone else to put in all the effort of research and study for them and then post it up online as an easily digestible ten to thirty minute long youtube video or a pop-science/pop-history article no longer than a page-and-a-half.

None of these people sought these things out back then and none of these people will take this as an opportunity to springboard themselves into a further understanding of something. What's really going to happen is they're going to watch the video, say "huh that's kinda cool" to themselves, leave a comment, close the video, and then stop thinking about it. This isn't necessarily an issue with education, it's an issue with human nature, particularly in populations with low attention spans and a general distrust of the central educational institution as a whole.

What I found shitty about history in school was they didn't teach us anything about research. We were given secondary sources to read and told "cite this, format it this way". They even told us what the historian's argument was instead of expecting us to discern it ourselves. They told us exactly what the exam markers would be looking for. It just became an exercise in memorising certain historian's contentions.

The fun in history is reading widely and thinking about different arguments, which historytube fucking SUCKS at communicating. They usually pick one (very generalised) secondary source as the basis for their whole video and don't discuss the historiography at all.
