President Joe Biden on Tuesday said that the United States will impose sanctions “far beyond” the ones that the United States imposed in 2014 following the annexation of the Crimean peninsula.

“This is the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine,” Biden said in a White House speech, signaling a shift in his administration’s position. “We will continue to escalate sanctions if Russia escalates,” he added.

Russian elites and their family members will also soon face sanctions, Biden said, adding that “Russia will pay an even steeper price” if Moscow decides to push forward into Ukraine. Two Russian banks and Russian sovereign debt will also be sanctioned, he said.

Also in his speech, Biden said he would send more U.S. troops to the Baltic states as a defensive measure to strengthen NATO’s position in the area.

Russia shares a border with Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

A day earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops to go into the separatist Donetsk and Lugansk regions in eastern Ukraine after a lengthy speech in which he recognized the two regions’ independence.

Western powers decried the move and began to slap sanctions on certain Russian individuals, while Germany announced it would halt plans to go ahead with the Russia-to-Germany Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

At home, Biden is facing bipartisan pressure to take more extensive actions against Russia following Putin’s decision. However, a recent poll showed that a majority of Americans believe that sending troops to Ukraine is a “bad idea,” and a slim minority believes it’s a good one.

All 27 European Union countries unanimously agreed on an initial list of sanctions targeting Russian authorities, said French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, and EU foreign affairs head Josep Borell claimed the package “will hurt Russia … a lot.”

Earlier Tuesday, Borell asserted that Russian troops have already entered the Donbas region, which comprises Donetsk and Lugansk, which are under the control of pro-Russia groups since 2014.

And on Tuesday, the Russian Parliament approved a Putin-back plan to use military force outside of Russia’s borders as Putin further said that Russia confirmed it would recognize the expanded borders of Lugansk and Donetsk.

“We recognized the states,” the Russian president said. “That means we recognized all of their fundamental documents, including the constitution, where it is written that their [borders] are the territories at the time the two regions were part of Ukraine.”

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Putin said that Ukraine is “not interested in peaceful solutions” and that “every day, they are amassing troops in the Donbas.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday morning again downplayed the prospect of a Russian invasion and proclaimed: “There will be no war.”

“There will not be an all-out war against Ukraine, and there will not be a broad escalation from Russia. If there is, then we will put Ukraine on a war footing,” he said in a televised address.

The White House began to signal that they would shift their own position on whether it’s the start of an invasion.

“We think this is, yes, the beginning of an invasion, Russia’s latest invasion into Ukraine,” said Jon Finer, the White House deputy national security adviser in public remarks. “An invasion is an invasion and that is what is underway.”

For weeks, Western governments have been claiming Moscow would invade its neighbor after Russia gathered some 150,000 troops along the countries’ borders. They alleged that the Kremlin would attempt to come up with a pretext to attack, while some officials on Monday said Putin’s speech recognizing the two regions was just that.

But Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters Tuesday that Russia’s “latest invasion” of Ukraine is threatening stability in the region, but he asserted that Putin can “still avoid a full blown, tragic war of choice.”

Ukrainian-developed SPG is now operational, the 155mm Bogdana:

There is no official information about the number of Bogdana 155mm howitzers in service with the Ukrainian armed forces but according to some military source, only a single vehicle of the Bogdana had been produced. In January 2022, the Bogdana conducted its first firing tests.

According to a video published by the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense on June 30, 2022, the Ukrainian army targeted Russian forces on Snake Island using Ukrainian-made Bohdana 155mm self-propelled howitzer destroying Russian positions on the island with fire correction transmitted by a Bayraktar TB2 drone.

With the new pictures of the Bogdana published by the General staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on December 26, 2022, we can confirm that the 155mm howitzer is now fully operational with the Ukrainian army.

The Bogdana is based on a modified 6×6 truck chassis KrAZ-6322 with a two doors crew cabin at the front and one 155mm cannon mounted at the rear. It can fire all the standard 155mm NATO ammunition with a maximum firing range of 42 km with standard ammunition and up to 50 km with rocket-assisted projectiles. The truck carries a total of 20 artillery rounds. It is operated by a crew of five.

The Bogdana is equipped with computerized control and targeting system that uses SIPLUS and SIMATIC HM modules produced by Siemens, as well as a shell-loading device.

The crew cab is fitted with armor providing protection against the firing of small arms and artillery shell splinters. The truck is powered by a Diesel engine and can run at a maximum road speed of 80 km/h with a maximum cruising range of 1,000 km.

Edit: The first prototype was built in Kharkiv. When Ukraine forces retreated from the city, reportedly it was ordered to be destroyed to avoid being captured by Russians, but the development team took it with them when they left as well.

Even though it's pretty much a glorified technical, fielding one that effectively mounts a 155 is pretty fucking cool.

Not that much different from a CAESAR, but the toeboard is different enough it's probably their own design.
Sticking a 155mm with an automated gun layer on the back of a 6x6 isn't exactly hard. No doubt it is technically a 100% indigenous design, but they'd be fools if they didn't steal as much of the design as they could from CAESAR to use as a base.

For those wondering why the USA doesn't have something similar, that sort of rapid mobility fire support is handled on the doctrinal level by air support. And no, this war has demonstrated once and for all that NATO assumptions about Russian air defense being able to stop Western air power were either on the mark or overly rosy towards the Russians.

It looks similar to CAESAR, but aside from the manual loading aspect, it also differs in fire-control; allegedly lacking the GPS/network integration required to use things like M982 Excalibur; as when they shelled Snake Island with it, drones were used to adjust fire.

But even so, I doubt that state of affairs will last for long; and there's probably nothing stopping it from using fun things like rocket-assist/ER, or even laser-guidance (i.e. a copy of the M712 Copperhead), which would be very handy with drones lasing targets.

The amount of guaranteed funding this war has generated for R&D and rapid fielding has got to be making a lot of procurement & doctrine types permanently wet, especially because all of those old, burning questions about Russian capabilities are being answered.

Well, keep in mind even if it can't use Excalibur IIRC we still gave them a bunch of M1156 kits, and those are manually set by the crew before loading and were designed to be compatible with existing NATO 155mm systems... and Bogdana appears to have been built to those same NATO standards.

You need to be careful with phrasing because there's been a lot of new, burning answers to those old, burning questions. Such as, oh, "What is the expected crew survival rate of a destroyed T-72?"

Why does this keep happening? You'd think they'd've started taking their cellphones by force after the first incident
There was a pretty good article in the NYT last week about Ukrainian civilians who served as an underground resistance in.... [town] and the article said the Russkies couldn't/wouldn't turn off their cellphones while on night patrol which made them easy to pick off.

Heh, I went to go look up the town and there's a new article out:

For Russian Troops, Cellphone Use Is a Persistent, Lethal Danger

Isn't CAESAR also manual loading with the ready ammo stored in the side boxes?
The Ukrainian Bogdana doesn't have a power-assisted loading tray & rammer like CAESAR (labeled as "semi-automatic"); the shell & charge still need to be manhandled into the breech, and appears to lack even a simple feed-assist system like the M777.

One thing you should know is, for the Russians their hatred against the Ukrainian are so deeply ingrained they would much more willing to show how incompetent they are than admit that the Ukrainian are better than them

A T-90S (Indian T-90S specially) apparently was redirected from export to the Russian Armed Forces and later destroyed. Some are claiming India sent T-90S tanks to Russia for refurbishing or upgrades meaning this is an Indian built example that was swiped for the Russian military but that is unconfirmed at this time. Interesting as the T-90A variant seems to have disappeared from frontline service.

Putin says ready for Ukraine talks if Kyiv accepts ‘new territorial realities’

President Vladimir Putin tells Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan that he is open to dialogue with Ukraine if Kyiv accepts territories occupied by Moscow as Russian, the Kremlin says.

“Putin again confirmed Russia’s openness to serious dialogue on the condition of Kyiv authorities fulfilling the well-known and repeatedly voiced requirements of taking into account the new territorial realities,” the Kremlin says in a statement.

PUTIN OFFICIALLY BEGS UKRAINE TO STOP BUWWYING HIM AND DECLARES UNILATERAL CEASEFIRE ON ALL FRONTS

MOSCOW, Jan 5 — RIA Novosti. Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu to introduce a ceasefire in Ukraine from 12:00 on January 6 to 24:00 on January 7, the Ukrainian ceasefire reported press service Kremlin.

"Given the appeal of the holy patriarch Kirill, I instruct the Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation to introduce from January 12:00 on January 6 to 24:00 on January 7 a ceasefire on the entire line of military contact of the parties in Ukraine", — says the statement.

The Kremlin noted that a large number of citizens professing Orthodoxy live in the war zones, so Russia calls on the Ukrainian side to give them the opportunity to "visit services on Christmas Eve, as well as Christmas Day of Christ".

Earlier on Thursday, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill called for a Christmas truce so that "Orthodox people could visit the services on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day".

Last December ROC stated that Russia's entry into hostilities in Donbass was the result of the sabotage of the Kiev authorities and Western countries sabotaging its peacekeeping efforts. He admitted that he perceives what is happening with deep pain, but noted that the blame for fueling the conflict lies primarily with those who "set the goal of destroying the unity of Holy Russia, the unity of our people and our faith".

At the same time, the Russian Foreign Ministry reported that there was not a word about any cessation of hostilities on the part of Ukraine, and in Kiev they were determined to escalate the conflict. President spokesman Dmitry Peskov also said that no proposals for a new year’s truce were received from the Ukrainian authorities.

Since February 24, a military special operation in Ukraine has been taking place. Vladimir Putin called it the task of "protecting people who have been bullied for eight years, genocide by the Kiev regime". According to the head of state, the ultimate goal of — liberation Donbass and the creation of conditions guaranteeing the security of Russia itself

CNN:

Kyiv dismisses Putin's call for 36-hour ceasefire in Ukraine as "hypocrisy"

Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to the Head of the Office of President of Ukraine, said Russia must leave “occupied territories” in Ukraine before any “temporary truce."

“First. Ukraine doesn't attack foreign territory and doesn't kill civilians. As RF [Russian Federation] does. Ukraine destroys only members of the occupation army on its territory," Podolyak said.

“Second. RF must leave the occupied territories — only then will it have a ‘temporary truce’. Keep hypocrisy to yourself,” Podolyak said on Twitter.

Prior to Russian President Vladimir Putin's announcement of a temporary ceasefire in Ukraine, Podolyak responded to Patriarch Kirill of Moscow’s appeal for a “Christmas truce," saying the statement was a “cynical trap and an element of propaganda”.

“ROC [Russian Orthodox Church] is not an authority for global Orthodoxy & acts as a ‘war propagandist’,” Podolyak said on Twitter.
“ROC called for the genocide of Ukrainians, incited mass murder and insists on even greater militarization of RF [Russian Federation]," he added.

Some background: Kirill has been a vocal supporter of the war in Ukraine and gave a sermon in which he said that “military duty washes away all sins."

The leader of the Russian Orthodox Church has also been locked in a feud with Pope Francis, who has described the invasion of Ukraine as Russian “expansionism and imperialism.”

resident Biden and Chancellor Scholz expressed their common determination to continue to provide the necessary financial, humanitarian, military and diplomatic support to Ukraine for as long as needed. To this end, the United States intends to supply Ukraine with Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicles, and Germany intends to provide Ukraine with Marder Infantry Fighting Vehicles. Both countries plan to train Ukrainian forces on the respective systems.

In light of Russia’s ongoing missile and drone attacks against Ukraine’s critical infrastructure, President Biden and Chancellor Scholz affirmed their intention to further support Ukraine’s urgent requirement for air defense capabilities. In late December, the United States announced its donation of a Patriot air defense missile battery to Ukraine. Germany will join the United States in supplying an additional Patriot air defense battery to Ukraine

Not one but two Patriot batteries and the M2 Bradley. I think the Poles are to thank for pushing the idea when Germany originally offered to send a Battery to Poland. Marder I think isn't going to really matter in the grand scheme of things though.
