It's funny how formulaic these invocations become. Jokes from an all-female work crew living rent free in my head.​

Context, I'm stealth, over 11 years on T, 30 years old. I'm a line cook and have worked with predominately men my entire life.
At my current job, though, I'm the only male in a group of 6. We get along, I'd call my coworkers casual friends as we occasionally hang outside of work for a drink or two, etc.
There's one thing that gets to me. Often times, when another department comes by they'll address us as "ladies... and /u/my-dingaling". In response, one woman (the kitchen lead) will almost always say "oh /u/my-dingaling is a lady!" It's a lighthearted joke, I guess, but I can never figure out how to deal with it. It seems like a weird joke to me, like a joke the guy should tell about himself, if it had to be told at all. I feel it might be precedented if I were a flamboyant personality, but I'm a pretty quiet, laid-back and calm person.

Anyway, this has happened around 4 times already and I don't know how to react. I just don't say anything. I have to say something to stop it because it bothers me way too much. She doesn't know how much it stings, but at the same time I feel like if I show her it bugs me then it's my fault for taking it so seriously. I doubt any of them even think about it past the moment, but it lives rent-free in my head and any negative response I put out there would seem disproportionate to a simple joke.

I'm pretty comfortable in my masculinity but not comfortable enough to joke that I'm female. I need to figure out a way to demonstrate these jokes aren't welcome without coming off too intense. Because right now the only response my brain can come up with is intense. It really hurts, mainly because I can't understand the reason she'd joke like that at all on my behalf. I keep trying to figure it out and nothing makes sense to me.

I know I am taking this super seriously but that's how I operate. I'm not much of a jokester myself, but usually I can understand the meaning behind social jokes.
Does anyone have an idea of what I can say next time this happens? I'll say something directly to this person, it isn't a case for HR or anything, it's maybe just a casual friend misunderstanding what is and isn't an okay subject to joke about. It's simply something I've never had to deal with until now so I don't know how to stop it without being weird about it.

Option 1: Scoff/say "pfffft" with a laugh.

It sounds like you're stealth and passing, so this response would indicate that you don't care about the remark and it has no power to shake your masculinity because you're so secure in it. It's probably what a lot of cis dudes would do, but ones who got tired of the joke would probably escalate down the list. The fact this has happened multiple times means you're well within your rights to go more serious, though.

Option 2: (putting on an extra deep voice for sarcastic emphasis) "Yep, definitely a lady, nothing weird here."

This is a short response that highlights the absurdity of the joke your kitchen lead is making without bringing down the atmosphere or drawing unnecessary attention to you. It also begins to hint that you don't feel included when your kitchen lead says those things, and if she's socially graceful, she might pick up on that and stop saying it.

Option 3: "You keep saying that. You do know I [have a beard/low voice/don't have tits/other masculine features you possess], right? Do you need to get your [eyes/ears] checked?"

This response conflates gender expression with gender identity a bit, but as long as you're casual about it/not overly defensive in your delivery, it's snappy enough to throw the ball back into your kitchen lead's court in good humor. If you're stealth and confident in your passing, then she's probably gonna struggle to come up with a comeback about how you're actually female lol. The risk is that she might start listing clockable features/feminine items of gender expression, and if that's not a can of worms you wanna open, you can go further down this list.

Option 4: "Hey, that joke's getting old. You know I'm actually a dude, right?"

This response starts to get more sincere about the fact these jokes bother you without trauma dumping on anyone. If you're stealth, then "you know I'm actually a dude, right?" is likely to elicit an affirming response, and she'll probably say something about how she's calling you "one of the girls" as an act of acceptance/inclusion with the group. That'll give you an opening to say something along the lines of "I appreciate your attempt to make me feel welcome, also I would appreciate if you show that in a different way in the future if that's alright"

Option 5, the good old fashioned I message. Simple format: "I don't like it when you do that, please stop." If I were phrasing it for my boss, I'd say something like "Hey, if it's not too much to ask, I'm really not comfortable with those jokes. I know you mean well, but I'd appreciate if you could move onto new material, please."

If you and kitchen lead have any kind of rapport, she'll probably pick up on the fact these jokes are hurting you, and not wanting to hurt you, she will likely stop. Sometimes it can be vulnerable to admit a thing hurts you, but sometimes people have to be told that in order for them to understand why they need to stop.
