EU "Climate terrorists" is "nonsense word of the year" 2022 - " The “non-word” election, which has been taking place since 1991, is intended to draw attention to inappropriate use of language and thus raise awareness of the need for careful use of terms."

"Climate terrorists" has been voted "nonsense word of the year" for 2022. This was announced by a jury of linguists in Marburg. Several politicians had referred to the "Last Generation" as the "Climate RAF". First, however, an activist drew the comparison.

The “nonsense word of the year” in 2022 is “climate terrorists”. This was announced by the language-critical "unword" campaign on Tuesday in Marburg. The expression was used in public discourse to discredit activists and their actions for more climate protection, the jury justified their choice.

She criticized the use of the term because activists are "equated with terrorists and are thereby criminalized and defamed". The jury complained that non-violent forms of protest, civil disobedience and democratic resistance were placed in the context of violence and hostility to the state.

Several politicians, including representatives of the CDU and CSU, had described the self-proclaimed "Last Generation" as "Climate RAF" - a reference to the left-wing terrorist group Red Army Faction (RAF), which murdered 34 people from 1972. First, however, the long-time activist Tadzio Müller drew this comparison over a year ago when he spoke of the emergence of a "green RAF" if further climate protection measures were prevented in Germany.

The “non-word” election, which has been taking place since 1991, is intended to draw attention to inappropriate use of language and thus raise awareness of the need for careful use of terms.

Words that violate the principles of human dignity or democracy are eligible

The jury, which consisted mostly of linguists, gave second place to the expression “social tourism”, which had been declared a “nonsense” in 2013. CDU leader Friedrich Merz used the word last September in connection with war refugees from Ukraine and later apologized for it. The jury saw in the use of the word "discrimination against those people who are fleeing the war and are looking for protection in Germany". In addition, the word obscures their fundamental right to it.

In third place came the phrase "defensive architecture," which was criticized as misleading and euphemistic. The term refers to a type of construction that prevents homeless people from being able to settle down in public places for longer.

The "nonsense word of the year" was selected according to various criteria from suggestions that interested parties had submitted by December 31, 2022. There were a total of 1476 submissions with 497 different terms, of which almost 55 met the jury's criteria. The jury consists of five linguists and one journalist.

Words that violate the principles of human dignity or democracy, that discriminate against social groups or that are euphemistic, obscure or misleading are eligible. When it comes to the “nonsense” choice, it doesn't matter how often a term was suggested. In 2021, the choice fell on “pushback” .

It's translated from a German article, it's written as one word in German.
I mean, that's because Germans have a tradition of taking two separate words, crashing them together, and pretending that this is a totally new word. "Klimaterroristen" might as well be two words.

Civil disobedience is always criminal. That's what it means. It means to disobey whatever rule you find to be questionable or immoral. It is not defamatory to suggest that people who engage in civil disobedience are criminals, they usually end up getting arrested for their crimes.

This is absolutely hilarious. The only reason why major companies are even defending these eco fascist goose-steppers is because it serves their purpose. Any other time that it inconveniences them is when they'll happily use the term 'climate terrorist.'

This would be the fictional equvalent of Shin-Ra going out of their way to defend Avalange for blowing up their Mako Reactors. Utter nonsense.

I know I'm just a filthy rube but is language not always evolving?
What is a made up word today could easily become a part of normal lexicon.
People are always creaming themselves over how Shakespeare invented a bunch of words and expressions.

Oh, wait, it's a bunch of Krauts whining about clown world shit being treated like a circus act. Carry on.

Meanwhile it's perfectly okay for them to call me a terrorist because I vote conservative and want to see America become a strong nation which can be proud of itself.

Fuck all the way off you self righteous twats and take your climate terrorists to hell with you.

Lol linguists calling a word a "nonsense word" (and implying that's a bad thing)

If you're going to do that, why don't you destroy the entire field of morphology? After all, they use nonsense words all the time in their research. Literally, they just make up a nonsense word and ask people, "if one bazqux is a noun, what do you call two of them? If it is a verb, how do you say you are doing it?" to figure out how conjugation works in any particular language. Here's them asking about frabjous.

Linguists work with nonsense words all the time and the best they could come up with is one that actually has a meaning.

I think using "nonsense" here in English is misleading because the word used in the original article has no accurate translation (because it is made-up as well). What they mean is "a newly created word people (esp in the media) have been using that is problematic somehow". It's pretty subjective, personally I would nominate all those "sensitive and inclusive language" replacements, such as "birthing person" or "folx".

People that stop/ slow the development to a crawl of replacement fuels that generate less co2, using things like Algae farms to make more oil thus saving us from running out, and stop the development of modern nuclear fission reactors because of accidents in the 70's, and actively use violence and damage priceless artifacts are Climate Terrorists
