President Joe Biden on Tuesday said that the United States will impose sanctions “far beyond” the ones that the United States imposed in 2014 following the annexation of the Crimean peninsula.

“This is the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine,” Biden said in a White House speech, signaling a shift in his administration’s position. “We will continue to escalate sanctions if Russia escalates,” he added.

Russian elites and their family members will also soon face sanctions, Biden said, adding that “Russia will pay an even steeper price” if Moscow decides to push forward into Ukraine. Two Russian banks and Russian sovereign debt will also be sanctioned, he said.

Also in his speech, Biden said he would send more U.S. troops to the Baltic states as a defensive measure to strengthen NATO’s position in the area.

Russia shares a border with Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

A day earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops to go into the separatist Donetsk and Lugansk regions in eastern Ukraine after a lengthy speech in which he recognized the two regions’ independence.

Western powers decried the move and began to slap sanctions on certain Russian individuals, while Germany announced it would halt plans to go ahead with the Russia-to-Germany Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

At home, Biden is facing bipartisan pressure to take more extensive actions against Russia following Putin’s decision. However, a recent poll showed that a majority of Americans believe that sending troops to Ukraine is a “bad idea,” and a slim minority believes it’s a good one.

All 27 European Union countries unanimously agreed on an initial list of sanctions targeting Russian authorities, said French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, and EU foreign affairs head Josep Borell claimed the package “will hurt Russia … a lot.”

Earlier Tuesday, Borell asserted that Russian troops have already entered the Donbas region, which comprises Donetsk and Lugansk, which are under the control of pro-Russia groups since 2014.

And on Tuesday, the Russian Parliament approved a Putin-back plan to use military force outside of Russia’s borders as Putin further said that Russia confirmed it would recognize the expanded borders of Lugansk and Donetsk.

“We recognized the states,” the Russian president said. “That means we recognized all of their fundamental documents, including the constitution, where it is written that their [borders] are the territories at the time the two regions were part of Ukraine.”

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Putin said that Ukraine is “not interested in peaceful solutions” and that “every day, they are amassing troops in the Donbas.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday morning again downplayed the prospect of a Russian invasion and proclaimed: “There will be no war.”

“There will not be an all-out war against Ukraine, and there will not be a broad escalation from Russia. If there is, then we will put Ukraine on a war footing,” he said in a televised address.

The White House began to signal that they would shift their own position on whether it’s the start of an invasion.

“We think this is, yes, the beginning of an invasion, Russia’s latest invasion into Ukraine,” said Jon Finer, the White House deputy national security adviser in public remarks. “An invasion is an invasion and that is what is underway.”

For weeks, Western governments have been claiming Moscow would invade its neighbor after Russia gathered some 150,000 troops along the countries’ borders. They alleged that the Kremlin would attempt to come up with a pretext to attack, while some officials on Monday said Putin’s speech recognizing the two regions was just that.

But Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters Tuesday that Russia’s “latest invasion” of Ukraine is threatening stability in the region, but he asserted that Putin can “still avoid a full blown, tragic war of choice.”

That's a good point, but I'd counter that the problem for Russia is they don't have the orders to keep the production lines open that long. Right now they have orders to keep the lines open for another 6-8 years maybe and once they're down I'd question if Russia could ever get them going again. The other problem is who would buy them, especially in numbers enough to make it work, given the alleged costs (the Vietnam deal is rumored at a total of $2bil for just 12 aircraft).
At this point I doubt even existing orders will be anywhere near completed, given the likelihood of orders being cancelled by their customers; or simply reneged on any time Russia feels like it needs the aircraft.
On to some more immediately relevant news:

Sweden has confirmed they're sending Archer artillery to Ukraine:
:woo:
A single gun can achieve multiple round simultaneous impact & unass the AO before the rounds even land; imagine what a small battery could accomplish, especially with their drones spotting.
Pakistan is sending 150+containers worth of 155mm ammo to Ukraine.
Definitely not paid-for.... at least not by Pakistan.

Holy shit, this is likely going to pan out to be one of the most devastating weapons that Ukraine acquires in this war. With victory as a real possibility, this may top all the armored fighting vehicles (and possibly tanks, if Germany gives in to the pressure to give Ukraine Leopard 2s) if Ukraine can use them efficiently.

Oh man, it's gonna be a wonderful shitshow. Dunno about Destiny, but Lazer Pig will decimate this moron, too bad Gonzalo is probably too damn stupid to realize when it inevitably happens.
Soooo looking forward to it.

Dunno who the Vatnik is, but while LazerPig isn't always right I don't think I'd want to be across from him during a debate.

Absolutely correct; the thing is, much like the F-16 (or F-18 or F-35) domestic acquisition SHOULD be able to care of production spin up, and keep the lights on until its off the end enough for export. New F-16s are being made, but there are a number of years since the 1972 introduction that either no F-16s were made, or less than 12 were produced.

Forgetting the current fuckery, if Russia wants to keep playing even Regional power games, they have need for at least 200 Su57s to counter Europe and their Eurofighter and asymmetry china. But they aren't doing that, they are wasting their time and resources dicking around in Ukraine because muh soviet borders.

No doubt the Chicoms are as interested in the combat performance of the Su-57 as we are, if not more so; since we probably already have a good idea.

Gonzo Lira used to use the handle "Coach Redpill". I may not have all the details but he apparently went to Ukraine before the war to make some MTGOW fight club commune near Kharkiv Oblast. In one lulzworthy moment the Kraken Battalion captured him thinking he was actively spying for the Russians but let him go when they realized he's just a sperg and letting him run his mouth would well poison the Pro-Russian position. During his run in with the Ukranian military Null had a good segment in his podcast about the guy running around in the Ukrainian capital during the first weeks of the war constantly calling people "system pigs" and earning the ire of the locals. Knowing what I know about Kharkiv natives I'm not sure how this guy hasn't been killed off by militas or angry locals.

Seems like big mistake for me, letting him go that is. Imagine sperging out in a country at war, and shilling for the invaders openly.
Would have apprehended him on spying charges and then "lose" him in some war area. He should go sperg out in Russia instead, instead of polluting Ukraine with his low IQ.

From what I understand Ukraine has effectively lost. Russia is in bad shape, too. However, most of Ukraine is basically gone and they have no actual economy besides being propped up by the West to basically throw mud in the eye of Russia.

I am in no way saying this to purely troll, but Ukraine basically can no longer support itself. It's been hollowed out by the war and that manlet Jew who everyone hypes up for no reason.

I agree. In a war this ugly there's no room for enemy sympathizers. If anything this shows how fucking lenient the Ukies are with their enemies.

The "debate" or rather stream is a total shitshow. Do not recommend.

I just started to watch the stream and Gonzolo is such a fucking moron.
His powerpoint is so bad.

I've only listened to this guy on the kill stream back before Ralph cooked his last brain cells with booze but this stream is as productive as a debate with a Woman's studies major on weather or not all men are rapists.

My favs were:

1. Big statement with lots of possible questions that needs way more letters than this sentence. And then the following demand:
Agree or disagree? Yes or No?

2. Lira used rather loaded words. So Piggy ask him for his definition of evil. Answer? "Opposite of good", Defintion of good? "Opposite of evil". :^)

3. Destiny wanted to make some counterpoint. Lira then just called him a liar. So Destiny gets the hint that this is not a debate and does the sensible thing and leaves.

4. Most of all the whole gall of wanting to invite people to a discussion. See the tweet below. Reality then is Liras autismo power point presentation, and a shitty presentation at that.
2142141.JPG

5. Netherlands being a MAJOR port of the Europe economy, because food exports, duh.
I do happen to have some break down figure for the European Countries, even by region.

2142151.JPG

Nearly 6 %. Wow.
But anyway. Judge for yourself.

I have far more sympathy for Russian soldiers that were badly mistrained and sent to expire in some shitty trenches for literally nothing than for Lira.
All of these people, from Gonzalo/CRP, to Max Blumenthal to Eva Bartlett, they know exactly what they are doing. There are so, so many of these people that have literally dedicated their careers to shilling for Russia and very narrowly attacking anything Western, without any sort of consistency. You'll get attacks that the West is racist and nazis that hate blacks and Jews, and the next week the attack will be on the West is demonic and progressive line.
This West needs to wake the hell up already and understand these people wield real power and brainwash thousands and thousands of people that are simply unable or unwilling to seek nuance or multiple sources. Very frustrating to see the milquetoast approach to a very serious issue.

One thing that is equally funny as it is disturbing is how similar Gonzo sounds to the yokels in the other Russian/Ukraine war thread. I tuned out about 30 minutes into it but it was really disappointing that Gonzo didn't get called out for claiming to want to save Ukrainian lives while siding with the faction that openly calls them subhuman and worthy of extinction.

It was decently funny for how stupid it all was.
I like listening to streams that turn into wrecks but this was painful. It was worse than when Ethan Ralph tried to explain to Metokur how he felt betrayed by for making fun of him being beaten up in Portugal twice. I've seen more coherent dialog between two methed out sexpats in Thailand.

Just a bunch of chill Ukebros on their downtime, assembling kamikaze drones for funsies

Madyar's Birds; "step by step" (Шага шага) badda-boom, indeed.

This is the first time I've ever seen production footage of field-expedient kamikaze drones. Similar things have been produced by private companies for state militaries for a while now, but they always keep cameras off the production floor when doing video demonstrations.

Edit: I wouldn't be surprised if this gets pulled from YT whenever it gets reposted, or they'll allow only heavily censored edits. Even channels who legally play around with this kind of thing are very careful about not detailing the methods of production; that sort of visual knowledge makes YouTube & other associated agencies very nervous.

I liked it for how Gonzo played out the part of the most stereotypical Russia supporter, shifting goal posts and black and white nonsense as Quindoll mentioned. And it was against someone who seems completely unaware of how the usual Bloodsports stuff would go, which Gonzo even mentions that's what he considered the stream to be.

So you end up have a gay Scot just laughing his drunken way through all the Russophile nonsense of Gonzo's until he finally gets upset enough he kicks him off the stream so he could invite some friends on to comfort him over it and they go over his pathetic slides for over an hour now. I couldn't help but find it funny how Gonzo was sperging out nearly the entire time over nearly everything said.

Belgium has a greed a deal to keep a pair of nuclear power plants going for another decade after a bit of maintenance (hmm fucking with people's gas supplies and forcing them to look into alternatives was a bad idea, who knew?)

Also I'll add this at the end since it's kinda related; in approx 1.5 hours from this post (12pm ET, 5pm UTC) Gonzalo Lira is finally gonna debate some pro Ukrainians, specifically Lazer Pig and Destiny, so you know if you wanna get your popcorn or beer ready, now's your chance.

If there's one cool thing about the KGB Gnome it's that he's helping people finally wake up to the fact that nuclear energy is good when not managed by slavs too stupid to boil water without almost irradiating an entire continent. Thanks midget!

In eastern Ukraine, Russian mercenary forces mounted a concentrated assault on a key frontline town, a siege that President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said his troops were holding off in an “extremely difficult” military exchange.
The Kremlin had positioned the most experienced units from the Wagner military-contracting company near the town of Soledar in the eastern Donetsk region, according to Ukrainian operational command spokesman Serhiy Cherevatyi. Ukrainian forces were holding the line following 86 artillery attacks “of various caliber,” he said.

Ukrainian forces repelled attacks near 13 settlements throughout the eastern Luhansk and Donetsk regions over the past day, including Soledar, the General Staff said in its morning update on Facebook. Ukraine’s Defense Ministry said the assault on Soledar followed previous unsuccessful attempts to capture it, resulting in heavy losses. Zelenskiy said in his nightly address that the resilience of the Ukrainian troops allowed his country to gain additional time, noting that “there are almost no whole walls left” to defend the settlement. Russian forces also shelled civilian infrastructure in the cities of Kharkiv, Kherson, Kramatorsk and Ochakiv over the past day, the Ukrainian military said.

US Says It’s Working With EU, Ukraine to Prevent Weapons Diversion (10:03 p.m.)
The US is working with the European Union and Ukraine to prevent the weapons pouring into Ukraine from being diverted into the international arms market, a State Department official told reporters.
While the US focuses its efforts on protecting portable and high-tech weapons, the EU is concentrating on small arms and light weapons, said the official, who briefed on condition of anonymity.
The official dismissed reports of large-scale diversions of western military equipment as Russian disinformation and said the US isn’t aware of any credible reports of weapons shipments going astray.
Germany’s Baerbock Pledges Support After Visiting Kharkiv (9:48 p.m.)
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock visited Kharkiv to underscore Berlin’s commitment to supporting Ukraine “all the way.”
“Besieged, bombed, liberated — this city is a symbol of Russia’s aggression and for Ukraine’s unbreakable will to live in freedom from oppression,” she said in a tweet.
Zelenskiy Say Allies Can Show Russia Escalation Won’t Work (9:18 p.m.)
A global effort to stop Russia’s aggression is urgent, “especially now, when Russia is accumulating forces for another escalation,” Zelenskiy said in his nightly video address to the nation.
“Together with our partners we can do and we are doing everything possible to make Russian rulers understand that any escalation is not going to help them,” the Ukrainian leader said.
US to Train Ukrainian Soldiers on Patriot System in Oklahoma (7:22 p.m.)
The US will start training Ukrainian soldiers on the Patriot missile system at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, next week, Brigadier General Pat Ryder, a Pentagon spokesman, told reporters.
The US will train about 90 to 100 Ukrainians, the number needed to operate and maintain the complex air-defense system the US is sending to Ukraine.
The training would normally take several months, but the US is considering ways to speed it up by incorporating classroom work and simulation, Ryder said. Germany hasn’t announced plans for training on the Patriot system it’s contributing.
Canada to Buy a US-Made Nasams System for Ukraine (7 p.m.)
Canada will buy a U.S.-manufactured air defense system for Ukraine, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Tuesday after a meeting with US President Joe Biden in Mexico City.
Trudeau’s office said Canada will purchase the National Advanced Surface-to-Air System, a medium-range defense system. It wasn’t immediately clear how quickly it can be delivered to Ukraine for use.
Germany’s Baerbock Makes Visit to Eastern City of Kharkiv (4:36 p.m.)
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock made an unannounced visit to the northeastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, from which Ukrainian forces pushed back Russian troops last year, in a show of solidarity with residents confronting a winter in war.
Citing Ukraine’s aspirations to join the European Union, Baerbock said in a statement that she would discuss advances made by the country toward membership. “The government wants to make concrete offers to strengthen the rule of law, independent institutions and the fight against corruption — as well as moving closer to meeting EU standards,” she said in a statement.
Ukraine Seeks to Seize Assets Linked to Russian Billionaire (4:31 p.m.)
Ukraine’s Justice Ministry signaled that it aims to seize assets it claims are controlled by Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska, filing a suit against him in the nation’s top anti-corruption court.
The government will seek to confiscate assets that Deripaska can influence directly or through intermediaries in Ukraine, the ministry said, accusing him of “supporting Russian President Vladimir Putin’s regime” and supplying military manufacturers. A spokesman for Deripaska, who doesn’t have direct or controlling stakes in entities that own the Ukrainian assets, declined to comment.
Ukraine’s Inflation Steadies on Price Cuts Amid Blackout Fears (2:30 p.m.)
Ukraine’s wartime inflation steadied last month as retailers cut prices for perishable goods after Russian attacks on the nation’s power grid triggered concerns that staple foods would spoil.
Consumer prices rose 26.6% from a year earlier in December, the State Statistics Service said. The result was below the 27.4% forecast in a survey. A better-than-expected harvest of vegetables and fruits last fall also helped, the central bank said in a statement to Bloomberg.
Russia’s Budget Gap Surges to Record as War Hits Finances (1:24 p.m.)
Russia’s federal budget deficit widened to a record in December as revenues plunged amid restrictions on oil exports and spending on the invasion of Ukraine grew.
The fiscal gap reached a record 3.9 trillion rubles ($56 billion) last month, according to Bloomberg calculations based on preliminary government data released Tuesday. That brought the full-year shortfall to about 3.3 trillion rubles, reversing a surplus in the 11 months of the year. Finance Minister Anton Siluanov later confirmed the full-year figure, which he said amounted to 2.3% of gross domestic product, in televised comments at a government meeting.
EU Plans New Sanctions and Signs Accord With NATO (1 p.m.)
Ursula von der Leyen, the head of the European Commission, told reporters in Brussels that the bloc plans further sanctions against countries like Belarus and Iran that “militarily support Russia’s war.”
Von der Leyen, with Charles Michel of the European Council and NATO’s Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, earlier signed a cooperation agreement between the EU and the alliance. The agreement “recognizes the value of a more capable European defense that contributes positively to our security and is complementary to and interoperable with NATO,” Stoltenberg said.
The leaders said the EU and NATO were determined to work more closely on issues including resilience, protecting critical infrastructures, space and the security impact of climate change.
Ukraine Suspects Russia Used Missiles to Hit World War I Mine Landfill (1 p.m.)
A Russian attack on Ochakiv in southern Ukraine on Monday hit an old depot full of World War I sea mines, the governor of Ukraine’s Mykolayiv region, Vitaliy Kim, said on Telegram.
According to preliminary data cited by Kim, Russia may have used supersonic Kinzhal missiles to hit the concrete-covered landfill on the seashore. The resulting massive detonation wounded 15 people and damaged more than 200 buildings, mainly breaking windows and roofs, according to Kim.
Russian Independent TV Network Gets Dutch Broadcast License (1 p.m.)
Russia’s most prominent independent TV channel, Dozhd, or ‘Rain,’ received a license to broadcast in the Netherlands after Latvia revoked its permit last month for a program that appeared to advocate sending supplies to mobilized Russian troops fighting in Ukraine.
The journalist later apologized and was fired. Like several other independent media outlets, Dozhd fled Russia after the start of the war and initially set up operations in Latvia. Dozhd applied for the Dutch license on Dec. 6, the same day Latvia revoked its license, and was granted a five-year license on Dec. 22, according to a statement by the Dutch media authority.
Baltic Ministers to Discuss Joint Purchases of Defense Weapons (10:30 a.m.)
The Baltic defense ministers of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are holding a meeting to discuss joint purchases of defense capabilities for the region, including the HIMARS rocket launcher systems, the Lithuanian defense ministry said.
The ministers will also discuss aid to Ukraine and preparations for the upcoming NATO leaders summit in Vilnius, it said.
Latvia May Send More Stinger Missiles to Ukraine (10:30 a.m.)
Latvia is considering sending stinger missiles to Ukraine, along with unmanned drones and training as part of a package of support, Defense Minister Inara Murniece said on Latvian TV.
“The Ukrainian front is our line of defense,” Murniece said. The package of support is in response to requests from Zelenskiy, she said.
Ukraine Says It Sees a Budget Shortfall of $3.5 Billion in 2023 (10:30 a.m.)
Ukraine will face a monthly budget shortfall of about $3.5 billion in 2023, lower than the $5 billion last year, due to more consistency in tax payments and lower expenditures, Finance Minister Serhiy Marchenko told a conference in Vienna via video. More predictability on international aid is allowing the government in Kyiv to shift to annual budget planning from the monthly approach it had adopted in the wake of Russia’s attack last year, he said.
The finance minister called for tighter sanctions on Russia that would have a more meaningful impact on its economy, and punishing efforts to circumvent existing restrictions.
Scholz Says He’ll Keep Talking to Putin (9 a.m.)
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said he’ll keep talking to Russian President Vladimir Putin about the war in Ukraine — with the purpose of hammering home the message that Germany and Europe will never accept that Russia is trying to change borders in Europe through military force.
Saying Germany has become one of the most generous countries supplying Ukraine with financial aid as well as weapons, Scholz won applause from fellow Social Democrats at a campaign event by vowing that “we’ll keep doing this as long as it will be needed.”
The chancellor added that Germany would continue to work closely with allies like the US on any future weapon deliveries for Ukraine, saying that there won’t be any German go-it-alone moves.
Biden Aid Says Ukraine Aid Secure Despite McCarthy Deal (9 a.m.)
US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said the $47 billion in new aid for Ukraine approved in the $1.7 trillion government funding bill last month won’t be at risk. His comments followed a deal struck by new House Leader Kevin McCarthy with GOP hard-liners to cap 2024 spending in a move that could potentially include efforts to cut defense spending.
“That is money that has been appropriated,” Sullivan said. “I do not see that money getting taken away from us and therefore our ability to have the resources to support Ukraine, with both the security assistance it needs, as well as the economic humanitarian and energy assistance its needs.”

Imagine the salt that would flow behind closed Russian doors if one is shot down; though I imagine they'd insist it wasn't a true & honest Su-57, and that they only made 10 in serial production, not 11..... and that it definitely wasn't nailed by a NASMS or Patriot.

Ehhhh...
The Chicoms have their own J-20 which (aside from the engines) is a pretty unique indigenous design, made to perform a different combat niche, and its development not tied to the Su-57. I don't really see why they would worry about the Su-57's performance, except to try and jump in and steal contracts if they decide to export their own stealth fighters.

If you really want a laugh, look up Su-75

It took the US 1 month and a week to capture the entire country of Iraq.
It has been 5 months since the 1st assault on Bakhmut and the city is still holding.
It has been 4 Invasion of Iraqs later and Russia has still failed to capture a single city less than 80 miles from their own border and less than 20 from areas of which they already de-facto controlled before the onset of the invasion.
Said city being just 1 of 3 positions needed to actually begin thinking about marching on Kramatorsk, the other of which (Izium & Lyman) have already been counter-attacked and retaken by Ukraine.
Kramatorsk being the necessary launching position to secure control of Donetsk Oblast, said territory being the most minimal of Russia's objectives.

But tell me more about how Russia is winning.
