You know, this is just proof how broken Phil's methodology is. He streams everything because he "doesn't have time" but then lists
TV as a hobby. Most youtubers still manage to juggle being a small business owner, video editor, and set aside finances for a set period each quarter to ensure stuff is fine and dandy for tax purposes. 20 minutes of good quality stuff is better than 2 hours of shit.
Phil's pure lazyness when it comes to editing means that his "uploading" excuse is puerile bullshit too. You click "upload" and then piss off to spend time with your girl, or watch TV or something on Netflix or whatever.
Dependent on the game, most youtubers spend a grand total of two hours on a game per week. They chop this up into a rough cut of 15-20 minute episodes. Smarter youtubers will play two games at about four hours per week, do the cutting and audio checks, then steadily upload a variety of content for people to come back to.
The Vast majority of their "job playing video games" is a very long grind of audio checks, footage check, editing, ensuing constant commentary during said gameplay, recording commentary after capturing footage if needs be, and even outright figuring out scripts and talking points to prime commentary and then at least once a year, figuring out what the fuck a business expense is and what isn't.
You can get a little creative here, but many small business owners will be nice and cautious.
UK residents, for example, can claim up to 1/5th of their household bills if they operate out of their own home for business purposes, which is pretty neat. I doubt Phil's even looked into whether he can get that sort of relief as a self employed home-based business.
Ones that do take the "play what I want" attitude will upload more of a certain game if they enjoy it, but generally sick to their schedule of a daily, 20 minute upload. I follow a few youtubers who will simply throw out their schedule and upload a couple of videos a day if they really enjoyed themselves and it
shows in the videos.
