Yeah I think you are right, Sally has probably been overprotective of him from a young age and let him get away with things when he turned on the "sad little boy" act. And I think Ed came in pretty late in the game, Chance was already an adult when ED moved in, or at least I think so but maybe I'm wrong on that.

I think you're still giving him a bit too much credit. I'm theorizing myself here but I'd wager that he acts the same way now that he did as a kid to get what he wanted out of Sally. He knows how to manipulate her emotions, but that's pretty much it. He runs the same plays online under the assumption they will work just as well, but it never works out that way because people either see right through him or his charade can only be kept up for a small amount of time before they see through it.

It's learned behavior more or less. He's 4 years old and sees the Dragonzord in Walmart and tells Sally he wants it, she says no so he either throws a literal screaming fit or falls to the ground "crying" till she relents just to shut him the fuck up. Now at 32 he pretends to cry and pleads that people need to leave him alone and stop calling him a thief and pedo so he can support his family.

He can squeeze a little bit of sympathy from a stranger online or a group of Facebook moms, but that only lasts for a few days tops because those people are more intelligent than Sally and far less willing to indulge him.

It's possible the thing he craves even more than praise and admiration is pity, like getting someone to say "Awwww you poor thing!" is what he's really after.
