Anime/Manga - Discuss Japanese cartoons and comics here; NO CULTURE WAR DOOMPOSTING!

I'm not sure exactly what the cutoff is for 'boomer' anime but my favorite 90s shonen is YuYu Hakusho. When I was a kid I thought it was drastically inferior to DBZ and never really watched it but I finally gave it a chance probably 8 years ago at this point and it really worked for me then. DBZ still has a special place in my heart but YYH is definitely the superior series.

FLCL also holds a very special place in my heart. It's from 2001 but I'd call it the last hurrah of 90s animation. Not sure how it would play for a first time adult viewer in 2023 but I was in middle school when it was running on Adult Swim and it hit perfectly for me. I probably watch it once or twice a year. If you end up liking it it's getting milked pretty hard right now with FLCL Progressive and Alternative having released in the last few years and FLCL Grunge set to release this year, plus FLCL Shoegaze possibly this year as well. No idea if the latter two will be any good but FLCL Progressive might work better for a modern viewer, especially a younger one with ADD, but as someone who was pretty much the optimal demographic for the original I just found Progressive to be an inferior imitation of what FLCL did. As short as it is it could still be worth watching as it does have its moments. Alternative I do think is worth watching. It's definitely doing its own thing as kind of an interesting take on cute-girls-doing-cute-things slice of life stuff, but this is supposed to be about boomer stuff

If you like Naruto you'll probably like Bleach. Just find a guide to help you skip all the filler stuff as there's a lot of it and most of it is really bad. I think the only filler arc I enjoyed was the zanpakuto rebellion one and I have basically no memory of it at all.

Outlaw Star is pretty cool, I wasn't the biggest fan of Cowboy Bebop but a lot of people hold it in really high regard (I want to give it a try now as I'm sure I'll appreciate it more at this point)

If I was going to show an actual boomer an anime the two I would pick from would be Fate Zero for a man and Violet Evergarden for a woman. They're more modern but I think they'd hit the boomer sensibilities.

For what it's worth I did enjoy Evangelion when I first watched it. For me the appeal was the character interactions and the weird monster designs. I'm just not sure how well it would hold up now cause when I watched it I was still in high school.

I really just want more characters like Sauron in shitty isekais rather than Dragon Quest Ripoffs where they verge into sci-fi and the demons aren't bad. I want a fucking Demon King that is prepared to torture people just to ensure the lowest fucking shit bailer knows to be afraid of him. I want generations of a country enslaved because they pissed him off and he's petty enough.
"The Executed Sage Is Reincarnated As A Lich And Starts An All-Out War" might give you at least some of that.

apparently because of the dub too.

as a subfag there's something about 90's anime dubs that simply hits different, can't say why (I mean, just compare the pokemon theme to the jp one).

which reminds me of another boomer anime that's better in dub (imo), it's even up on youtube these days:
(oddly only episode 2 has the english ED for some reason)

can never go wrong with some shirow. also mandatory ghost in the shell if you haven't seen it yet @Worj
maybe add some bubblegum crisis and dirty pair for some prime 80's animu. or fist of the north star for your fiance.

has anyone read the manga Daily Angel Densetsu?

for those who dont know, its about Seiichirou Kitano, a student who transfers to a new school and immediately gets treated like he's some kind of monster/delinquent because of his appears. i mean, just look at him.

turns out, Kitano is actually a pretty nice guy. too nice to be honest. but because of his looks, people have branded him a trouble maker since birth and few people want anything to do with him. those that do usually wants to beat him up because rumors of him being some strong fighter and young punks wanting to prove themselves. but because of his good nature, luck, misunderstandings and overall charisma, Kitano suddenly finds himself making a group of friends that slowly but surly, will see him for what he really is. not as a devil, but as an angel.

i highly recommend people to read this. its good.

I have a habit of importing mangas (sometimes artbooks & novels) directly from Japan, through Amazon JP, but DHL has increased the shipping prices by quite a lot since December 26th. To give an example, I could order 10 mangas + 2 artbooks for a total of 27 euros in shipping fees in the beginning of December, now it's a whopping 44 euros for just 10 mangas.

I ship my things to the US
Kazakh smugglers get them into Finland
they now have a referral program; I'm not a referral customer but I still have to pay the referral overhead
then they drop them into the mail (Priority International) to get them across the border
plus I have to pay JP domestic shipping
and JP taxes, sometimes
and the customs fee lmao no
and I can only pay with a cash card, which I must top up $3000 at a time
I still have 3 massive packages trapped in Japan since March 2020, due to covid, and two outright lost/stolen
and then, when my books finally arrive, I find they have no furigana
in conclusion, fuck buttgag and fuck fedex

Did anyone else struggle to finish Vinland Saga or am I just a retard?
The manga was a page-turner up until the farming arc.
It was boring from the start, what with the slow in the mind woke dad. It's exactly like those woke historical movies which have historically-accurate (tm) villains with screechy, rasping voices in them gloating and doing a shitty imitation of historically-accurate (tm) brutality. The dinnertime tv movies my parents watch have more actual brutality in them.

The best thing about Vinland Saga was that it inspired me to buy a rowing machine. I dropped the manga long ago. I'm still rowing.

Anyone have some recommendations of good boomer anime (other than dragon ball)?

Code geass did not age very well and instead of adding onto the series, theyve made two mobile gachashits rehashing the events of the first season.

Genesic recode and the one by f4samurai show something happened along the way with either a change in management or the series creators losing their minds.

Never watched R3 and stopped watching back when the 2nd akito movie kept being delayed. Came back to it years later to this absolute trainwreck of a series.

Oh, I didn't think to mention that. For FLCL absolutely watch the dub unless you have a degree in mild-to-moderately obscure 90s Japanese pop culture references, like popular models of the time, daytime TV that no one remembers anymore, radio/TV commercial jingles, bands/idols etc. It was heavily localized for the dub in a way that I think was necessary for an American audience to get anything out of it at all. The most prominent example of one of the gags that you'd miss would be "It's all about looking cool. You gotta act like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, or Rage against the Machine, or Richard Cheese!" If you did that joke with Japanese bands I think there's a 99% chance of any full-on weeb not getting it, let alone a normie. The director of the show is actually a fan of the dub as well. He didn't go as far as to say that he preferred it but he heaped praise on all of the main characters, especially Haruko and Naota's friend with the glasses, noting that he ultimately was never satisfied with the VA they got for the friend in the original version

YYH and Bleach are good either way. I have a slight preference for the dub of YYH and the sub of Bleach but I could watch either version of either one. In YYH Kuwabara's voice gives me sympathy pain but I wouldn't have him any other way and the rest are good too. For Bleach Johnny Yong Bosch is a standout as Ichigo but the rest is middling

No real opinion on Outlaw Star as I've only seen the dub, and as mentioned I want to try Bebop again so no opinion there either but when I see people talking about it online they're usually talking about the dub

Trigun (not the shitty new one they're making) if you like westerns, and Cowboy Bebop.

New to the thread and I have a few questions.
What's the general feel on mangadex? I know they have a decent amount of trannys as devs.
Are their new comment fourms any good? The old comment system was fun and basically unmoderrated
This ones a longshot but does anyone have an archive of the PaulBunyonTrophy translations before he sperged and deleted everything a few years back?

Cowboy Bebop was another thing I saw on adult swim growing up like twice and I actually do remember thinking it was okay, the voice acting was good. I'll keep in mind what you said about dubs, and I guess that isn't surprising since everyone likes the dbz dub (or seems to at least like goku anyway)

Like clockwork, once every couple weeks they break the login system or fuck up some other crucial part of the site that makes it impossible to read manga until they revert whatever they did. Other than that, it's okay. The only time I ever visited the forums was when they were having massive server/database issues a long time ago, so I have no idea about it now.

Isekai Ojisan has got to have one of the most cursed productions I've seen for an anime in a while. Halfway the series gets delayed for a whole season due to COVID and the director quitting, Netflix stopped subbing the fucking series, and now Episode 13 is in limbo for God knows how long. It's a shame because the anime is funny as shit, it's just constantly getting fucked over.

Before the forums when it was just comments the discussion and memes were pretty good
