Unless things have changed in the past few years, Rob's on the money. Earlier interviews about the movie suggest it would be about Jesus's descent into Hell and victory over Satan, likely concluding with the Resurrection story. Considering how violent the original was, it's probably the only logical sequel, though I question whether it's wholly necessary nearly twenty years later. I guess it's good to have more Christian movies in theaters, at least.

There are some Christian denominations (the fundy nutty splinter ones) that do sometimes pull shit like a battered wife must not only forgive her abusive husband, but must do so even if the husband doesn't ask for forgiveness. However, this is mostly a function of people who don't know how the Bible/forgiveness/penitence actually works. In every Parable about forgiveness Jesus ever spoke of, in EVERY case, the person who was wronged was ASKED for forgiveness (see: the Parable of the Unforgiving Servant). It's also a function of narcissists in religion, who themselves see their own conduct as without fault, and will not ask, but DEMAND that someone forgive, if not them specifically, then the (also deemed arbitrarily without fault) Golden Child or some other favored individual, despite the individual in question never asking for forgiveness or being sorry after wronging a person.
